Hi all.

Nice to see this thread is still alive.

Coolcat and BoGSter, I've yet to meet with you guys. I'm sorry, been busy with work and study. The Brown Monster will make an appearance soon. Hehehe.

Talking about the GS shaft... it's a unit that has integrated rubber dampers, so it can feel a little 'loose' or springy. But that's good, at least the rear wheel doesn't lock that easily when you downshift a little earlier than you should. I did that on an ST1100 and was rewarded with a squealing rear end... and I'm not talking about the bike! Hahah! That being said, you must look after the Paralever rear bearings and pivot pins; if they wear out, the drive shaft and housing assembly will have excessive free play, leading to shaky handling and lots of clunks and clanks on acceleration.

The issue of maintenance costs keeps coming up. Honestly, I think I'm the cheapest, most tight-fisted GS owner there is out there. I'm switching to car oils for the engine (semi-synth is good enough for me) and I do all the other servicing myself so I find it really is quite a cheap bike to maintain. You've got to put in an initial investment to get the machine running in good order, though.

We should all hang out sometime soon. Damn this shift work...

I'm using mineral. I think most guys who DIY their bikes are either trying to save, or for interest, or for both :)

cheers

Hi.

The R-series BMW motorcycle engines have more in common with cars than they do bikes. These engines use a dry, single-plate clutch; this means the clutch does not operate in oil. The gearbox and final drive are also separate, unlike most bike engines and they require the use of a heavyweight gear oil for lubrication. For that reason, it is safe to use any oil rated API SE or up for the engine, including oils for petrol-engined cars.

However, PLEASE DO NOT USE car oils in motorcycle engines that have a wet clutch. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations or the engine manual.

This topic has been argued internationally... motorcycle oil vs car engine oil... a good warning/advice for those ignorant and those that trying to save a few dollars...

I do not want to go into any argument on this old boring topic but when I was young and stupid, guess in the early 1990, I was very impressed by the Mobil 1 advertisement and during that time, Mobil 1 cater only for car and not Motorcycle, believing in their ads, I tried on my Yamaha FZR400RR (OW01 replica), I kept that bike for many years till it went MIA with my friend, hiaz, long and sad story which I shall not elaborate here.

I was warned by the HL mech as I insisted of using the Mobil 1 and when I insist to use Mobil 1 for my Mystic, PML mech warned me of the same thing... anyway, both bikes are lucky to survive, my last seen of the FZR was a few years back, horrible outlook but in good running condition according to my "friend", guess he should have scraped it by now, number plate is FH7321P if I am not wrong.

To use it or not, think better leave it to owner, as long as they are aware and we are not footing the repair bill, we shouldn't bother what they put into the engine...

Given that Alan's charges aren't cheap, does he accept payment by credit card?

how much is the cost including freight, and labour for installation? I think this course of action advisable only if you (a) not keeping bike long (b) not putting too many miles on it. I would make sure the seller got good feedback to minimise risk.

Good luck, man.
