Let me guess, solid white big gauge wire, headlamp circuit of an oilhead?

What causes this coolcat? Any short circuit and damage to the bike? :thirsty:

Yes, it's to either the oilhead's headlight or the handlebar switches. Damage caused by age, I guess, discovered in the nick (pun intended) of time; repaired.

In Singapore where the amount of really good mechanics who understand the technicalities of the bigger cc bikes are rather limited - it would be better to go to agent since the savings of 1k is negligible compared to the cost of the bike. If you had good mechanics here who really understand the bike AND a substantial difference in the price of the PI vs PML - then it would be worth considering PI....

Hi Guys,

Anyone here interested to buy a GS800 Topbox Rack? I have one at home.

The rack fits the ADV topbox. Used only once. You may probably modify it to fit your bike. The alll famous Seng Kwang will probably be able to do it.

Letting it go for $120.

Let me know if any of you guys are interested. My contact: 94759900. :cheeky:

nice info... read about this type of issues on the wires(older bwms) before, wondering will it have a impact should the whole wires be insulated with another layer?

Frankly a bike's electrics isn't one of my strong points. Many bikes' harnesses will deteriorate over time with exposure to weather and engine heat. Some will experience chaffing (like the photo I took) from cable ties, movement etc. Along the bike's history, owners may fit modifications and power may be tapped from various sources, and wires spliced for that purpose. I like to think that it is not a unique BMW thing.

Basically I think any old bike is fair game for such deterioration. The problem is that with electronics, the number of wires have gone up while the gauge of the wires have gone down. There is no easy way out and physical inspection of the harness seems to be the only sure-proof way to prevent future electrical faults.

Cheers

Hi, Just now go for a warm up ride around the BKE,KJE,SLE,AYE,PIE,TPE,ECP. After 2 days of non-riding the r1100s need to throttle while cranking inorder to start and need to rev abit not to stall the engine, is this normal for old beemers? battery just change last christmas.

Anyone have problems in starting cold?

Not for EFI bikes usually. My boxer beemer will be tat hard to start if not ridden for say 4 or more weeks. So need to throttle a bit. After that just move off and go. And for the next few days just thumb the starter button to start, no need to throttle. Perhaps your throttle balance is off.

Cheers

I always use the fast idle lever (pseudo-choke) when I start the bike so I didn't touch the throttle at all, always fire up in a blink :thirsty:

My usual warm up route is PIE- KJE – BKE – SLE – TPE – PIE – ECP – AYE = 101km, clockwise around the island.

As coolcat knows, I am planning to replace my main harness and to rewrap, reroute and re-whatever all the damm wires now coiling merrily around my bike. Most were wired directly to the battery and can give electrical problems with the slightest provocation, besides looking unsightly.

The other night, I connected a trickle charger to the bike thinking of charging up the battery a little. I must have touched the wire connections as my bike either couldn't start or the driving lights couldn't be switched off. Luckily, after some pulling and twisting of the cables the bike returned to normal. It was scary (I thought I have to call the tow truck again) and I quickly stop and left the bike alone.

I am determined to tidy up all the electrical connections once and for all by getting a fuse box. The options recommended to me previously are:

Centech Ap-1/2

Touratech TPS-15

Streetwires CBR44M Combo

Blue Sea 5025

After checking the forums I am settling on the Blue Sea 5025.

It looks rugged, allows up to 6 connections, can handle up to 100 Amperes and is less pricey than the others, especially the Centech.

It is a little bulky but according to the pic sent by Phang and also pics from the internet, it has no problem fitting into a BMW.

There is also a page where a guy describes how he made a special bracket to mount his on a 1150GS.

It is sold on ebay for US$31.99, plus US$13.98 to ship. Total about US$45.97 x 1.43= S$65.74 ++ (credit card charges?)

e-bay

Please give your comments and suggestions. If anyone wish to get one, please let me know. I am thinking of placing my order in 1-2 days time.

Cheers.

A few months back, my bike lost all power (caused by electrics again). The engine also kept stalling whenever I closed the throttle. Luckily, I am able to ride it to a nearby motor shop by leaving the choke open.

Someone once asked what is a choke doing on an EFI bike. Well, this is one reason I can think of. Kudos to the Bavarians! :thumb:

I would suggest putting nuts and bolts with washers through these to prevent future escapes :)
