Hi All,

I am about to acquire a 96 RT1100 with 185000kms on the clock....Asw i am very new to the world of BMW riding, i was wondering if there is anything i should look out for or question before the takeover? There have been many ppl saying many things.

I will like to hear from from ppl who ride BMWs themselves bros. any pointers?

And yeah, do you guys meet up for coffee and stuff? i will love to drop by and have a chat guys.

Just concerned due to the high mileage and possible breakdowns that might follow. I intend to tour quite a bit next year and am presently riding a Vara1k.

I guess i am just another paranoid fella....Help me out yeah guys? Cheers.

There is no pain greater than not being able to ride a motorcycle....

There is no joy more worth mention when riding one,,,,,,,

Need some help here. Anyone out there in the electronic industry knows where to buy these connectors? Preferably heavy duty and waterproof.

Hi Vara,

Having had both the R1100/1150RT before, I can say that the boxer is one of the most reliable engines if maintained well and serviced at recommended intervals. More importantly, if you are about to commit to one with 185k km's on the clock is the service records. Do ask owner of bike history and as mentioned in the earlier posts of the key highlighted "gremlins" of the RT in particular.

Enjoy ur ride!

Hey guys need some help

I notice everytime I ride the Beemer in a heavy thunderstorm something haywire happens... Yesterday I was caught in this exceptionally heavy rain up north and went over a puddle of water... Immediately the gear indicator went crazy.... It just shifts from 0 to 1 and back to zero then one again.... The bike still performed well but its these small stuff that worries me.... The last time I rode the Bike in a heavy downpour the oil sensor gave way....... BTW its a 99 1100 GS... Any recomendations for aftermarket exhaust.. Thanks guys

I would check your harness for bare-wire points, especially for parts where the insulations have worn off because of age or wear-and-tear. Rain is fine, I have ridden through about 10 hours of heavy rain with no ill-effects save for pruned fingers and toes :) Hall sensor does not like water, but once dried out it should be fine.

LeoVince do a mid/muffler for the R1100GS. Good luck.

Cheers

Yes, I agree. Priority should be to get all the electrical gremlins sorted.

Only when you are sure the core functions perform properly and it is a bike worth keeping do you consider non-essential accessories.

Anyway, nice meeting luN, SilverBullet and Mahdi last weekend. :thumb:

Yeah thanks for the advise guys...

probably get it sorted out this weekend......

Bike is actually running perfect just the gear indicator thingy that day

Same here, it was really nice to meet up with currypuff, luN and Mahdi during the wkend ride to Kuantan.

The B road routes taken was scenic, challenging but also very interesting with minumum use of the N.S.H or any highway.

Logistic arrangements from start till end was Perfect.

GOOD JOB & WELL DONE to the PML staffs especially the ladies and the BMW motorcycle club members.

Bros of BMW, need abit of help. I got an offer for a RT11. Hopefully you can give me some advise. Thank you in advance.

Background:

This R1100RT ~ 96 or 97, has got 7yrs COE to go.

Bike not ridden for past ~2yrs (laid up, owner got a Ducati and a Type-R), I have not tested this bike.

According to owner, I will need to do a general servicing. The only problem is the rear shocks is not good (according to owner) and he insist I do up the shocks before riding it. Found a set of Ohlins on Ebay for $1.5K... cheaper to get in Sg?

Questions:

- is it wise to buy a bike which is not ridden and started for past 2 yrs? Any implication? I know bikes left unused, plastic "parts" / Rubber "seal" will become brittle/crack/deform/powdered/etc...

- Can the stock rear shocks be rebuilt? or must i really get a new one? I know Ohlins is the way to go, but upgrade later la.

Thanks BROS! damn itchy to own one! but still have doubts la...

i bought a bike that was not on the road and never rode the bike, sold it a year later and it was still not on the road

my mate has been trying to rebuild a bike for almost 3 years now another one has it in the shop for 1.5 years already.

its really up to you.

but my humble 2 cents worth, get a bike that is ready to be ridden otherwise you will just own a bike which your mechanic will get to appreciate on a daily basis. if you get joy in owning a bike and not using it, that's not a bad path to go down.:)

for shocks, there are other alternatives.

my two cents .... you will need a strong sense of humour and deep pockets if the bike has too many defects. The thing about getting a non-running bike back to running condition is that there will be many latent things that seem to need attention and before you know it, you are delayed and blew your budget. My (unsolicited) advice is to see what needs doing and work out a budget for it. Stick to that unless the bike is a keeper, in which case all hell will break loose and you will bust the budget as well as any schedule that you have allocated for it.

New Ohlins for a RT in Singapore I reckon is in the region of $2.2K.

One more thing .... "

Phang, thanks for the lead. I've found the Superseal and purchased it last week. The bad thing is that there is a minimum order. Anyway, it is a quality product; really cool. First time I had to put together a connector :)

Cheers

A display of BMW motorbikes

BIKING enthusiasts will have the opportunity to get a hands-on experience with BMW motorbikes at the BMW Motorrad Marquee at the Genting Adventure World Carnival to be held at Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands, from today to Oct 4.

The carnival, organised for overland travel enthusiasts, will see the best of BMW Motorrads including the R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure, F 800 R as well as the newly-launched F 650 GS and F 800 GS on display.

In Malaysia, BMW motorbikes receive staunch support from loyalists, boosting the sales of the brand annually.

This year, seven new models were launched in March, a strong indication of the ever-increasing market demand for Motorrads.

“Locally, BMW Motorrad has been successful in building a strong brand reputation and following which is indicated in its excellent sales growth record.

Mean machine: Visitors to the BMW Motorrad Marquee at Genting Adventure World Carnival 2009 will get a hands-on experience with BMW motorbikes.

In 2008, 183 BMW motorcycles were sold.

“Meanwhile, up to the current period in 2009, we have already sold 145 motorbikes.

“So far this number shows 39% growth from the same period last year where we had sold 104 units.

This is a tremendous growth for our BMW Motorrad division,” said BMW Malaysia managing director Geoff Briscoe.

Visitors to the carnival will get a chance to experience off-road trainings, riding experiences, mini-indoor games as well as learn more about BMW’s motorcycle products at the BMW Motorrad marquee .

“This carnival will be the perfect occasion for motorbike aficionados, novices or experts alike, who wish to master road-biking or just experience the thrill of riding BMW motorbikes.

“Our training programmes are tailored to the individual’s skills and interests, preparing them for every challenge out there,” said BMW Malaysia Motorrad manager Fazli Hisham Shukor.

The carnival is set to be the biggest outdoor adventure event in Malaysia.
