oh ya. question, why does the GS have so much backfiring? i bot a '08 1200GS

Actually i would not say 'backfiring' cos it only happen when we abruptly close the throttle too quickly especially after accelerating.

Most people would call it 'Popping' and this phenomenon is due to the lean fuel mapping to pass strict EU exhaust emmision requirement.

The Popping will be much more pronouce if you change out the entire exhaust system.

Learn to control the amount of abrupt throttle closure to minimise this Popping.

Ye, even the GS650 twin n GS800twin have these popping . It also a character of BMW GS. So no worries.

ah...noted.... but how not to close throttle? haha :p... when u got to close the throttle, u really got to close it.

ya, i read some early posting in this thread as well abt "backfiring".... not too bother by it if its norm, otherwise, i would hv tot some ECU tuning is required, or i've used the wrong fuel... i'm using 95... ok right?

Got to admit though, just after 3 days of riding the GS, it's the most "interesting" bike ever. No other bike seem to come close to its character.

Just wondering any riders riding the R1200GS/A here ride without the catalytic converter, but a straight through headers and using the oem end can? How is the backfiring and response? Was thinking of buying a akrapovic header and fit on the original end can.

I'm riding a 2004 R1200 GS with Cat removed using Akra End Can and Power Commander and Dynoed - occasionally backfires only when I shift down to 2nd gear and only with the noise baffle removed. - especially If I close throttle quickly...

Consider the Hepco & Becker Xplorer Alu Boxes

Yes wacko is right.. The bmw alu top box is ard sgd $800+ with locks from pml but i dun think it comes with the rack. Need to ask.

If every dollar matters then you can perhaps scout in ebay.

Seen a few of it both used and brand new. Price wise for new is not much of a difference but there is still a difference.[/quote

How much for the H&B Alu top box. I need a top box as well.

Pump in JB? I stayed in the east, seems not worth to go all the way to 2nd link for a GS isnt it? GSA...maybe still can say is worth but mine just a GS.

Any of new GS riders here feel the biting pt of the bike is very strong? Pai sei to admit, I'm losing confidence in tight space slow speed maneuvers, coz whenever it bites, i'm kinda fearful the bike will lurge fwd.

Thanks for the reply. I'm planning to run catless using the original exhaust. The weight saved on the exhaust is minimum. Cheers.

Hi tofuman

Saw your earlier post wrt just changing out the OEM header to a performance header w/o 'cat' and using back the OEM end can.

I did that too and this is what i experienced:

Slight surge/lack in acceleration from idle at stops and can be annoying.

Notice my exhaust area near the left foot is not so hot i.e no 'cat' = cooler air flow feeling.

Popping from exhaust slightly louder.

Overall performance increased slightly.

To correct the surge/lack defect:

Installed a performance street legal end can which correct the surge/lack issue.

However the Popping from the exhaust became really loud during rapid decel or sudden throttle closure after accel.

To reduce the loud Popping:

Installed a device that override the OEM IAT sensor to deceive the ECU into sensing the outside air temp is at -20'C which causes the ECU to maintain a richer mixture during the acceleration portion.

This reduced the Popping from the exhaust to a acceptable level.

Another way is to fit a Power commander which is very costly as suggested by eclee13.

Hi SilverBullet

Thanks for the feedback given. I had ordered the arkrapovic headers overseas, it should be on the way. Feedback giver by the ukgser running on the headers and original exhaust seems ok for the 2011 model. I will feedback once it's here.

Worse to worse I will just fit the after market exhaust if I encountered the mentioned.

Cheers,
