Hello all, i had a very happy day yesterday - i have my bike now:-) after almost 1 year in the school and endless waiting lists ( lessons, exams, repeats etc) - it is finally over!!! my Vara 125 is 10 yeas old but looks good and I do like its size, riding posture and everything so far.

We did transfer at LTA office and the I did some initial practice in the parking lot and then rode the bike home. The traffic went smoothly so I had some good practice (Last time I was on a bike 2 months ago when I passed my TP exam). Arrived home safely and then did some practice on quiet streets nearby. I feel the bike better and like the posture and smoothness of the gear changes.

Practiced some U-turns and 8-turns, so I can feel the bike better when turning at low speeds. It is still a bit unstable sometimes. Do you guys make your U-turns at 1st gear, or you switch to 2nd gear before the turn?

Anyway, very happy now. Pls let me know if you catch up together somewhere for a coffee/dinner, so I will join your group.

Cheers!

Hello

I have my bike for 1 week now and had some runs and practice on the road. So far so good. Time to refuel. Before I go to petrol station, just want to check one thing...

My odometer does not work so I might have to control my refuel liters and number of refuels to measure approx distance travveled. Doing so I will know according 3,000 km intervals between needed oil change pitstops and other maintanance services - I plan to count 10 refuels x 10 L each x FC (n km/L) = 2000...3000km

Questions:

- what FC km/l should I assume for an average FC? My bike is 10 years old and will be used for local runabouts and leasure commuting within the city (no long motorway runs).

Shall I use 25km/l as a average number, or 20km/l?, or 30km/l (hence I dont race, not rave much and switch gears lots to keep bike moving).

- the odometer screen was faded over time (or this is what previous owner told me). his service records show the distance was seen last time showing 42,123km 2 years ago, then the screen faded and he didnt bother to fix it. so I cannot see the current distance kms now. But does the electronic device still working counting the distance (even if it is not visible on the screen)?

Will I see my actual total mileage (I reckon it should be circa 53k by now) if I replace odometer screen/device now?

- if I want to fix the issue... can I replace the odometer screen only, or I will have to replace overall odometer device, OR overall dashboard information block (with speedometer, taxometer, light indicators etc??)

Pls advise as you probably did similar thing.

- any other way to know my FC and distance travelled? pls advise from your own knowledge (I guess some of you with older bikes had the same type of issue with the odometer screen)

- will such dead odometer trigger any questions from TP or inspection test, if they see it is not working? I can live with dead screen (and calculate my aporox distance as described above), but is it still legal? Just Asking because in some countries this is not allowed to run a vehicle without working odometer.

Thanks for you advise and help bros. I want to know above, so I will start counting my refuels, liters etc.

Cheers

I bought the bike but the manual book was missing.

Does anyone have a spare copy of the owner manual for vara125 (older model pre-2007), by the chance?

Or you might let me to borrow your own manual for a day, so I will get it scanned and print out, or keep as pdf/word file. That would work also.

Thanks , just want to have the copy to read some core basics about bike maintenance and DYI thingi

My 03 Vara averages 24ish to 28ish depending. For your reference, I stay near NTU and work in East side, Ubi area

You can replace just the LCD screen assuming its just the LCD that is faded.

I replaced mine about a year back when the LCD was fading.

The mileage information remains intact in my case.

Hope this helps

I downloaded my copy of service manual off the internet.

Just do a google search for "Honda XL125V service manual"

You are in quite a tough situation with the odometer.

It will be difficult to do any planning without indication of mileage.

My advise would be to find a workshop that you are happy with (location, price)

and have the LCD fixed. Same time get your first servicing done.

There are plenty of workshops that can handle the Baby Vara in the Ubi area.

Bikewerkz, K&T just to name a few.

But do drop by and ask around for pricing.

This way you can start afresh to keep your history of servicing, oil change etc.

I would assume 23km/L if most of your riding is off the motorway - based on my experience with my 2001 Vara, I used to monitor FC quite closely. You can measure your own with a GPS device (smartphone will do). Fill the tank to the brim, start the GPS, ride, then refuel to the top. GPS will give you the distance and the amount of fuel required to fill the tank is what you have consumed. Then apply arithmetics. Or just fix the damn screen. :)

You should be able to replace / fix the LCD alone, and the ODO numbers should appear correctly once that's done. LTA inspection won't check or care.

Oh, and I have a pdf manual somewhere.

It's not how fast you ride, but how well you ride.

Bike maintenance manual (pre-2007 model)

I was hunting for the owner manual last days. After lots of googling and checking endless links to various forums (where guys seem trying to find the same, mostly unsuccessfully), I managed to find one... It does not cover the whole owner book, but service pages only - good enough for my start. Happy to share here if somebody needs it and I glad to contribute to the forum - many thanks for your posts and advices on my other questions!!

Tiger 800 XC. :) I would switch for a lighter, less powerful bike if it had similar ergonomics. KTM is going to make a 1050 adventure bike that will be lighter and more powerful. If they made an even lighter version, like a 690 adventure I would be all over it.
