Hi guys . i'm planning to ride from Kl to Singapore via the second link. I've never ridden in Singapore so i'm not sure of the rules and regulations.I've tried to search this forum and found this circa 2009

Actually, any foreign vehicle has to buy an autopass card. My sis is married to a Malaysian and they drive down quite often. Damn card costs $20 and your entitled to 14 free VEP days. Once that's used up, it'll be $20 per day for cars, $4 per day for bikes

$5 for a whole day if u pass an ERP gantry. (This means it's a one time fee. I always joke with my bro-in-law to make full use of the $5 and go through all the gantries in sg )

The autopass card is essentially a cashcard, so there's actually no need to rent an iu unit. Also, autopass cards are issued to that specific vehicle. (Meaning that they are not "shareable" unlike cashcards)

With regards to the extra $120, i guess that's because the vehicle is registered in a non-Asean country. And if you do decide to head down here to sunny Singapore, do inform, who knows forummers are able to bring you to enjoy the sights and sounds.

A couple of my friends who have ridden here said that Malaysians have to buy an autopass AND rent an IU unit. Some other guys say that nowadays you'll have to buy an IU unit( not rent ) and get it installed.

My questions are.

- what is an autopass and where do i get it nearest , to the 2nd link

- What is an IU unit and do i have to get it . Installation involves wiring??

With it i can ride anywhere in Singapore anytime ? including through the ERP

- What is a ERP exactly . Any bike specific lane?

- I'm planning to make a short visit to the Merlion on the esplanade . Where is the nearest bike safe parking preferably walking distance ?

And if you have any other advise for a total noob to Singapore roads . please let me know.

Thanks guys.:)

erp=electronic road pricing. it's to control the number of vehicles during peak hours by making them pay a fee if they wish to use that road. sort of like toll.

erp usually resides near city area. u can take a look at http://www.streetdirectory.com for ur route planning n the erp areas u're going to cut thru. erp only open on certain timing.

IU is a unit that detects erp when u pass thur n auto deduct money from ur cashcard. i think u can get it in SG. if u have no plans to cut thru any erp, and/or u dont visit sg often, u dont have to get one. alternative is to pay the $5/day for unlimited passes thru erp.

IU also has another purpose for parking. most shopping centre r eps=electronic parking system, means it'll scan ur IU n deduct ur money auto.

for parking/free parking places, suggest u dig up another thread here which has all the parking infos.

Good luck & welcome to SG :)

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

Thanks Arthur.

Is the cash card and autopass the same thing?

can i get the cashcard and $5/day unlimited ERP pass at the 2nd link border ?

Thanks

Cashcard is a card used to store money, like the Malaysia 'Touch and go card' for paying toll or carpark payment.

Autopass is something else altogether.

Motorcyclist are the nicest people on the road, try not to kill us.

So which do i have to get ??

you know , maybe it'll be good if the local Singapore Riders here could put a step by step advisory of what to get , where to get it and how to use for all foreign riders coming to Singapore , maybe as a sticky .

If anyone knows of such an advisory please point me in that direction.

Thanks .

Griffin: perhaps your questions have not been answered. First: to enter singapore say 1 time only you need to have an autopass which when you reach at the immigration you have to slot the pass in. most malaysian come because of work, so their autopass is alot of value. If i am not mistaken, at Second link, to and fro you have to pay autopass.

ERP: motorist who wish to enter busy areas of Singapore must put their cash card in their IU unit. So if you wish to enter this busy areas you must have an IU unit place on your machine. If not you must know where the gantry of the busy areas so that you can avoid these gantries which have detectors and cameras. If you passed these areas without card and IU, your vehicle will be recorded. The good thing is gantries that are placed periphery to city areas like Bukit Timah and Geylang and Ang Mo Kio will not be operational after 930am and will be operational at certain areas after 6pm. And if you wish to enter Central Business District then you can enter at 10am to 12 noon for free. In between pay.

Please feel free to ask.

You can only purchase the autopass athe second link but cashcards and iu unit are separate. Cashcard are easily avaiable at 7-11 but it IS Very troublesome to get IU unit fixed at the designated place. What I will suggest you do is for your first time, and since you are going esplanade, if you can come on a saturday, you can go to the esplanade on a sunday where to enter is free(no need iu unit). you can aactually put your bike at designated places where it is free too.

Hopefully from there with your experience being there, you can come again,.

If you can find the place. And they may need to drill holes to your bike to install the unit

Use Clear Visor.Do Not Use Tinted/Dark/rainbow Visor if ure riding. Will kena Saman. Our Traffic Police Wont Give chance to malaysian on this offence. About the IU, i dont think its compulsory. what info i have now is that, u can beat as many ERP u want. but when you going out of singapore. u have to pay for the ERP. 1 Day $20SGD. Unlimited.

I actualy called the LTA and from what they told me ...if you pass through the ERP without an IU you'll be fined 70 SGD per pass. If 2 ERP = 140SGD.

Think i'll keep to the sunday plan..:giddy:

Also..the 5 SGD unlimited ERP access is only for cars

eh..they dont need to install IU daa...if all malaysian vehicles need to install them its mad la..walau..too many of them already..

griffin, just buy autopass at the customs there and ask about the one time payment regarding the ERP thingy, dont worry, the customs can guide u gladly enough.

in SG roads,u cant speed, cant have excessive smoke if ur bike is 2stroke,if anybody have problems or if u have problems with other motorist which eventually u confront each other, dont punch him regardless who is guilty or else ur in jail or fine.

you can buy cashcard at any petrol kiosk or 7-11 for $10($5 for the card,$5 value) for parking that uses barrier eg. town n shopping malls.

theres no parking in Sentosa,u have to park outside at the bus interchange there, beware of speed cameras and speed traps at overhead bridges or Traffic Police parked by the road shoulders.

if you smoke dont bring more than one packet(opened) to singapore.n yeah ur ciggs need to be open and not new.if there are traffic jams at expressway,DO NOT ever ride on road shoulders, unlucky enough u will be fine $150,weaving through the traffic is much safer in terms of pocket holes.

ull see a bus lane, dont ride on them, fine also.they are lanes with widely spaced continuous yellow markings.

well i guess thats a lot for now,do fill up ur petrol to the brim before coming here as the petrol's price here is way too expensive.

as kimmeng stated, welcome to the land of sadness,we're a fine country, one more thing..if by any chance Traffic police catch u for any mistakes, dont try and bribe them!just say u first time here and make blur face and most of the time theyll let u go.haha,ok thats all for now.

p.s: just dont buy an IU,its $150 and its not worth it once ur back in KL,for more information regarding rules and regulation, please check out http://www.one-motoring.com.sg

Filtering between cars in a traffic jam is legal right?? or do we have to follow behind cars ?

is not legal..by right we are taught to follow behind cars..but heng ah..likewise in malaysia,if u never go between them..ull never get to ur destination on time..anyway..too many riders doing it TP cant stop them..dont worry about this one..just dont go road shoulders..theyre definitely a no no.

oh and if u see double yellow lines and double yellow zig zag lines..it means u cant stop and park there..nor u can park on pavements..

some malaysian vehicles did install. if u're coming to SG very often n passing thru gantries, it's more convinent to get 1.

you can buy cashcard at any petrol kiosk or 7-11 for $10($5 for the card,$5 value) for parking that uses barrier eg. town n shopping malls.

i recall autopass has cashcard features, u just need to top up. ever saw m'sian vehicles slot autopass into the gantry.

Filtering between cars in a traffic jam is legal right?? or do we have to follow behind cars ?

not illegal, but if u have an accident there, it's anyone's guess who's wrong.

suggest u read up this

http://driving-in-singapore.spf.gov.sg/services/driving_in_singapore/information_dips_offences.htm

foreign vehicles does not have demerit points, but r fined accordingly. if u have serious/unpaid offences, u may be barred from coming to SG. however this list does not include those without points, eg parking on pavement, excessive smoke, additional lights, etc.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?
