Anyone watched the channel 5 coverage of George Yeo's speech at the nomination centre?

Can hear jeers then chants of "Worker's Party! Worker's Party!" in the background.

Hope all the Aljunied bros will give a good fight this time!

Temasek Holdings Loses 31 Percent of Portfolio

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/11/business/worldbusiness/11temasek.html

By BETTINA WASSENER

Published: February 10, 2009

HONG KONG — Temasek Holdings, the Singapore government’s sovereign wealth fund, said Tuesday that the value of its investment portfolio fell by 31 percent of its total, or about $39 billion, from March to November last year, a reflection of the stock market rout set off by the turmoil surrounding American subprime mortgages.

Temasek’s portfolio was worth 127 billion Singapore dollars ($85 billion) at the end of November, down 31 percent from the end of March. Lim Hwee Hua, senior minister of state with the Finance Ministry, confirmed the figures to Parliament on Tuesday, news agencies reported.

The decline was broadly in line with the performance of the world’s stock markets last year — the MSCI World Index fell 38 percent over the same period in American dollar terms, Bloomberg News said.

Temasek, which has a wide-ranging portfolio spanning financial services, telecoms, media, infrastructure and other sectors, is nursing losses from prominent investments that it made in Merrill Lynch and Barclays as it aggressively expanded outside its core Asian market.

Its $5.9 billion investment in Merrill Lynch alone resulted in a loss of more than $2 billion; the shares plunged before the stock was delisted after Merrill’s purchase by Bank of America.

Temasek controls some of Singapore’s best-known companies, including Singapore Airlines and Singapore Telecommunications, and has stakes in global companies like Standard Chartered.

Last week, Temasek announced that its chief executive, Ho Ching, would step down and be replaced by Charles Goodyear, the former chief executive of BHP Billiton, on Oct. 1.

S. Dhanabalan, Temasek’s chairman, said that the decision by Ms. Ho to step down was not linked to performance and that it was too early to determine whether investments made in the last two years would lose out in the long term. Ms. Ho drove the state fund’s expansion outside Singapore with acquisitions in China, Europe and the United States. She is married to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

decision to step down not BECAUSE of her "epic failures"????? :faint:

Even the ang mo CHip Goodyear oso cannot tahan and dun want to become CEO

and later become scapegoat for HOE Ching.

Ho Ching

Ho Ching (Chinese: 何晶; pinyin: Hé Jīng; POJ: Hô Tsing) is the Chief Executive Officer of Temasek Holdings (over US$100 billion in assets and owned by Singapore's Ministry of Finance) and the wife of the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong (son of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew). As a Chinese Singaporean, Ho hails from the Cantonese dialect group.

Ho graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1976 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical, First Class Honours) after completing her pre-university education at National Junior College where she emerged as a Student of the Year and was a President's Scholar. She graduated from Crescent Girls' School. She also holds a Master of Science (Electrical) from Stanford University, USA.[1] In 1995, Ho was conferred the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore.

She is the eldest child of four children of retired businessman Ho Eng Hong and Chan Chiew Ping. In 17 December 1985, she married Lee Hsien Loong,[1] who later became Singapore's third Prime Minister in August 2004.

She began her career as an engineer with the Ministry of Defence.[1] In 1987, she joined the Singapore Technologies group as Deputy Director of Engineering, and became its President and Chief Executive Officer before retiring in 2001. She later joined Temasek Holdings in May 2002.

She's an engineer! not a investment expert that can handle billions of dollars of our

national reserves! :faint:

wait maybe she's a gambler and the finacial markets are like her casino and the chips(actually our cpf money) too does not belong to her so she don't need to care so much o_O

Sg is a small fry, always bragging, bragging, bragging, but when comes to doing biz, it needs to pay to be heard, to have a share of the economic pie. Means Sg no real quality wan. Which is why the blew away $38bilion is such a huge setback, that kind of money could have been used to create a niche industry in Sg to export its products or services and make it globally viable, other than just being a transition shipping hub.

I really do envy Taiwan for making it in the bicycle and motorcycle world, on top of the PC world, itself being out of favour with China, and no need to suck up as$es as much as we do. I no longer feel anything fantastic about Sg since the 2002.

I read about this somewhere. About how Japan and Germany, after being devastated in WW2, sprung back to make a name for themselves in the world.

Japan and Germany made themselves a brand, a reputation. Their products are not cheap. Look at BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz. Jap products aren't cheap either. But ppl still look up to them and would prefer them over a cheaper "Made in China" or "Made in India" etc etc product. They took the right path, by engineering, innovation, marketing, image, whatever it is.... to build themselves a reputation.

What about Singapore? "Cheaper, Better, Faster".... that's the Singapore tagline. Whoring ourselves, competing with 3rd world labor.

my vote "swings" to the one who can get me my cpf monies when I reach my retirement age below 65....!

or the one who has a kid in tow. DO NOT TELL me to have more children, I've done my part now its yours.

What DeusExMachina said is true to a T

Greying population will most definitely bankrupt the government.

so far none are "taking a stab" at the "sacred cow" issue, at least not that I know of.. all only talking about lost this investment etc

Albeit none can weather the storm this particular topic will bring

I also find it almost disgusting whenever it comes to "walkabouts"

You almost NEVER see any of them (Both parties) walking the "ground" before this "episode"

Now everyday also got coverage.. Mostly markets..

I think if even 50% of our voters go marketing daily, voting can be done in a day! No need for a week

Don't carry my baby, don't give me fake smiles ask me to vote for you then proceed to the next table.

Believe you me, I'd rather have my meal in peace.

YOU SHOULD be walking the corridors (during this time i bet surely no rubbish), looking at the flat maintenance etc.

Many slog through the day only to be cramped up in public transport during rush hour, only to reach home smelling like

that guy/gal who stood next to you in the train/bus.

I kid you not, ff you should look at my flat at night, its like a bloody christmas tree, some staircases no lights or some bright, some dim..

Conserve energy at the expense of my family's security or are the contractors at fault for not knowing what coolwhite & daylight is?

Yes there is a difference people...

Then news just in, say this year still can elect president???

Got meh?? In all my years, no government body cared to ask me to vote president...??

Scared man dunno kena sue or not.....

looking for drz parts, any parts will do!

sian man, every morning my kids recite this in school, I pray the day don't come when they finally ask me the meaning of that sentence.

Tan Jee Say challenged PAP to publish figures for national reserves

Singapore Democratic Party’s (SDP) candidate for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC has challenged the People’s Action Party (PAP) regime to publish figures of the national reserves, after coming under relentless attacks by PAP leaders for his call to tap on the much vaunted reserves.

Mr Tan has proposed using $60 billion dollars from the reserves to fund a variety of programmes to stimulate Singapore’s economy such as $1 million for each local start-up which will create more than 20,000 jobs for Singaporeans.

As expected, his call to ‘touch’ Singapore’s (or the PAP’s?) reserves brought a barrage of criticisms from PAP ministers.

PAP Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang described the reserves as a ‘heritage’:

"This is something that is our heritage…..Do you just sell off all your oil, your resources? Or continue to conserve all this, so that subsequent generations benefit?”

Mr Tan’s opponent in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Dr Vivian Balakrishnan argued that the reserves were Singapore’s ‘ammunition’ in times of trouble:

‘Our reserves are for confidence and the long-term security of our country and our children, and not to be treated in such a flippant, almost trivial, manner.’

During a SDP rally speech last night, Mr Tan challenged the PAP to publish the real figures of Singapore’s reserves:

‘Publish figures of our national reserves. Give a detailed breakdown. Singaporeans have been wanting to know what our reserves are, and the late Ong Teng Cheong wanted to know too.’

Mr Tan was referring to President Ong’s request to the PAP regime to give him a breakdown of the reserves only to be told in no uncertain terms that it will require ‘52 man-years’ to do so.

Singapore’s reserves do not belong to the PAP regime. It is built up painstakingly by the savings of generations of Singaporeans over the years.

Do you want our reserves to be invested in Singaporeans or overseas in risky investments by Temasek Holdings and GIC?

.

Jessie

Well to know whether we can get our CPF before 65, the opposition needs to get voted into parliament and make the PAP answer how much of our reserves are left and what happened to them which even our late president, Ong Teng Cheong asked this question and he also kena taichi-ed away.

If PAP continues to control then we will not only, WILL NEVER KNOW how much of our national reserves are left but we will also kiss goodbye ever seeing cash money from our CPF.

This is precisely we feel shortchanged, we are paying millions for so-called 1st class leadership (more like village headman, since our country so dam small). But nowhere do we have something solid to be 1st class for a long time to come. Everything about Sg is so flimsy. You think property prices is a gona stay high for long? When Sg runs out of land space to cater to the rich investors, the prices will trickle down due to resource exhausted. Or worst, labour migration to China, and INdia who have developed their manufacturing and financial logistics on-par with Hong Kong, Singapore, London. Its a matter of time this will happen.

Time is running out, building the casino and losing billions in funds is not what national reserves should be spent on. Our so called most important resoures, people are not trained in anything solid to bring Singapore to be economically viable. Creative technology had a go, but lack national support, because our govt lack the foresight to quickly protect niche industry to foster growth. This is a major flaw in the economic development dept, we are screwed BIG time boys.

Poor Mr Ong, he tried to dig out the reserve information of Singapore, he tried to stop the sale of our people's bank POSB to DBS...end up with no state funeral. Still remembered he played the piano and his wife sang "moon represent my heart" at the charity show long time ago.

the problem is our education system. It is crafted to manufacture obedient WORKERS

PRI SCH->SEC SCH->3 options:

->Jc->NS->No good grades go retake or Poly. If good -NUS&NTU->work

->Poly->NS -> Must 2-3 years work then can enter NUS or NTU

->ITE-> NS -> Go poly but most go to work.

If u go to Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, etc those developed ones and even in other cities also, throw one stone at a young 20s 30 year old and u will likely hit a graduate. Unlike Singapore. Cos the government wants everyone to have the opportunity to be able to study to university.

If u go to Taiwan their technology and business universities are one of the best and many young taiwanese aspire to be in them and start their own technology startup.

So make it short, other countries, the education system's goal is to produce excellence in whatever field the univesities have under their wing. So u can see much innovation in these countries or reverse engineering which is well known in China.

BUTT in Singapore's case, the PAP government makes it compulsory to take away 2 years of our life to attend obedience school (NS) during our most creative parts of our youth and force feed us with discipline to make the whole society docile and obedient.

Go think about it.

Another thing, well if u pass your A levels but do not have a good grades and no placing in NUS or NTU, u will have to go retake or go to poly so that u can get a job later. Cos an A level cert is deemed quite useless in Singapore.

If u pass your poly and wanting to go to NUS or NTU straight after NS, u have to work for some time before applying bcos the government wants you to contribute to the economy (Unless u are Cert Of Merit holderor COM). After working 2 years definitely u already feel, wah work got money, want to go back to uni go do full time bo lui leh so how? Do part-time will always clash with work time. So bopien lor, continue working lor o_O

ITE also the same as poly, go work.

So the system is beautifully crafted to make us become JUST WORKERS. N now they say we do not have enough talents, so they bring in more and more foreign talent form China & India, Phillipines lah... of course cos these countries got soooooo many graduates whilst Singapore ppl are just poly dip or ite cert etc so become workers or just low class workers lor.

THe unfair part is that poly grads wanting to enter NUS & NTU have to go to work first but govn can summore give free scholarship to foreign students. ps-i dunno whether the system has changed or not cos this was what i saw last time for dip holders who wants to go to NUS&NTU straight after NS.

If we can dig up all the PAP's ministers family and children, i can safely assume that most send or will send their children to overseas colleges and universitites.

Dun u wonder why??? NUS & NTU not good enuf meh???? The govn promote to us so much and yet they never send their children there o_O

Reason being because they dun want their children to end to have the thinking of normal singaporeans blind & obedient workers that can be herded like lambs to the slaughter. They want their children to excel in whatever field they choose to do thus they send them overseas damn expensive Unis using his multimillion salaries which he get from our GST, Income tax, COE, ERP etc etc.

That is the reason why the PAP can control 50 years of Sg without much resistance. Cos all of those that has good brains that get to NUS & NTU has become obedient docile workers and can be herded like lambs.

In other countries the govns fear the university youths bcos of their unity and their rebellion if they see or experience any injustice.

Look at China the tiananmen square riots in 1989,

Look at UK, the raising of university fees erupted in a huge riot cos they felt they are shortchanged but such a situation to happen in Singapore.. i dun think so. We all know why.

Yes we are SHORTCHANGED not only thru CPF, HDB, COE, ERP, MBT, WKS, LHL, LKY etc etc but also EDUCATION and many thingslah

Posted

Just as i said above, now they are going to up the target for NUS & NTU admissions to let more Singaporeans in (Like as though they read my mind o_O ).

Last time we citizens got so much criteria to go in, in the end other countries like China, Taiwan, India, Phillipines etc throw stone surely hit degree holder.

SG, throw stone just hit diploma holder :slapforehead:

MOE may review 30% target for university admissions: Ng Eng Hen

Dr Ng Eng Hen

SINGAPORE: Education Minister Ng Eng Hen said the ministry may review its target for university admissions, so long as the quality of the degree is not compromised.

Currently, the aim is to have 30 per cent of each cohort in public universities by 2015.

Dr Ng also said no child will be denied a good education, because they cannot afford it.

He outlined how his ministry has, over the years, opened up more options for students to do well, whatever their aptitudes.

This includes giving resources to schools so that weaker students get more attention, as well as enhancing vocational and tertiary education.

Dr Ng said these changes were implemented after speaking to teachers, parents and students.

Dr Ng said: "What everyone was saying was, ’yes, grades do matter but it cannot overshadow everything’.

"We got so many stories to tell us that we’ve got so many pathways, so we wanted a system basically that reflected this. We wanted to broaden the system so that you have diverse talents, that you can meet it, that the child grows."
