Unfortunately, most instructor would prefer to teach experience dancers salsa and not some1 like my standard.....

Come on... you know that's not true. Hey, everyone has to start somewhere!

Look... it's not 'experienced dancers' per se that they prefer. Instructors prefer to teach students who have a good grasp of the basics. That means, you have to know how to keep the timing (how to dance to the music, keeping the 8-count), you gotta know the basic body movements (basic leg & hip movements) and you gotta know how to mambo without looking like a stiff corpse dancing.

These are all the rudimentary basics.

It's like teaching English. It's always preferable to teach English to a student who knows how to read compared to an illiterate. Right?

Anyway, all it takes is practice at home. There's this particular piece of music just about *ALL* beginners' salsa classes use... don't know the name of the song... but the music is slow, the clave is very clear and the singer goes, "One, two, three... five, six, seven" all the way. Perfect practice music. If you want it, I can send the MP3 version to you.

One last tip: in salsa practice is not a luxury, it's a NECESSITY. Classes alone won't cut it. You won't get much joy dancing during classes alone - you have to go out on other days of the week and just have fun dancing... to practice and implement what you've learned. Salsa is mindlessly boring if all you know is 2-3 moves. So you have to enjoy dancing and maintain a thirst for new moves.

If you're looking for instructors - look for those who run a medium sized class (too big a class and you'll end up as just another wallflower, too small and it loses a lot of the fun). Some instructors only knows the moves for his/her own gender well, but are sh!te when it comes to the opposite gender. You'll want an instructor who knows the moves for both the ladies and guys well (they will be able to better explain why you have to do certain things because they know precisely what your partner is expected to do).

Long posting. Hope it's been helpful.

Hmmm.... u r absolutely right about practising, will have to put all learned to practice to master the move intructor taught. Well, will try to find partner to do so unfortunately, i learned the man's steps as there's lack of male partners in our classes & i volunteer to be the man instead :cheeky:

Hey, really keen to have to the MP3, can you email to me? Thanks in advance :cheer: Thanks for all your useful tips and pointers!

My class has ended & see wat to learn next :cheer:

Aiyoo...

There will be days when there isn't enough of the opposite sex to partner with. Personally, I'd avoid volunteering to dance the opposite sex's move due to 2 reasons:

1) It looks GAY!! Ewwww... the last thing I want is someone commenting, "Hey, Brokeback Salsa!"

2) I don't know the ladies' move and I'll bungle up the footwork + handwork every step of the way. Attempting to be a lady so that some other guy can practice his move will confuse the hell out of the both of us, and neither of us will learn anything.

So I'd rather practice my move alone if there's nobody to partner with.

Ur classes finished already, meh? So fast. How many times was your class and what moves have you learned? Tell me.

BTW... if you want Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez... also got... hehe.. but Tito Puente's music is for experts only - they're all screamers, bloody fast!!! I just listen only.

Update:

Lost 6kgs now since my first post here in May, just by dancing Salsa alone (trust me, I hardly do anything else that can be considered as a form of exercise).

I'm now down to 71kg thereabouts from 77.5kg back then.

Are there any Salsa kakis at all here in SBF?

The doctor's weighing scale said last week that I'm now down to 69.5kg. Woo-hoo! That's 8 kilos down since April.

hsphalt... CC = community centre? Why not give Xenbar a try? Their classes look fun, but surprisingly nobody came to dance the last time I was there.

Union Square's crowd was better... but the floor was SH!TE.

The sheer neglect that created such a sticky floor is totally inexcusable, especially for a salsa dance bar. Two thumbs down! Boo!

Hey good for you.

Not sure when, but I will definitely return! Will try to make it for next year's salsa festival in Singapore.

Been dancing merengue quite a bit these days - the Colombian band at the Cuban bar I usually hang out here in KL has started to play a lot of brilliant merengue numbers lately.
