Hey everyone! I'm new to bikes and I was wondering what are the parts to the bikes that I must maintain. For example, I do know that you need to change to spark plug once in a few years. Other than that, are there other parts to the bikes which I should know of, and if there are, what is the time duration for each of them?

Sorry about that..I'm quite new to bikes. Really appreciate it. :)

check the service manual...all items listed...what is your bike make and model...?

some bikes have weak spots/system/components..and you have to pay particular attention to those areas.

to me...most likely you will overlook chain maintenance..

in time you will find that this item ...mundane and dirty will turn you off.

the chain is the last bit of the system to transfer the engine power to the rear wheels/..

lack of maintenance will accelerate wear and tear o the chains...

.chains are not cheap to replace..

and robs you of the horse power during transmission..

and bad chains will gives you a noisy and lousy ride.

in order to have a smooth ride...maintain your chains in tip top conditions...

CLEAN AND THEN LUBE every 500km..ezzyoiler's recommendations.

Yup, if its a 4-stroke bike, the spark plug only need to replace once every few years. For me, i only ride my bike about 7k one year, and my manual states that i need to replace my spark plug every 12k km.

Engine oil, you just top up can already. If you really wanna be lazy, top up enough. The every year just change new one. Wah, save alot of money. Other than that, the lubricate the chain and others parts ah. For my bike's chain, i lube about once a month, clean only like 3 times a year. Been using the chain for almost 2 years, still good. Sprockets not sharp, i think can last me until 2016 sia. This is about it if you ride a 4-stroke ah pek bike.

But if you ride anything else, don't do what i just told you lol.

Engine oil, oil filter, spark plug >> Change every 2500km

Chain and Sprocket >> If well maintained can last for as long as a year, ranging from 6 months to a year, everytime you go for service ask your mechanic if the sprocket is still safe to use. Remember the chain will get loose no matter what, so you will have to tighten it now and then

Coolant >> Normally once a year stuff, but if you start feeling your bike is overheating too easily or just after riding short time, go and change your coolant and check

Battery >> Depending on how often you ride, your battery should be able to last you a period of 6 months - 1 year, start your bike and check for any warning indicators for battery low, you can do simple gauge if you have a volt meter to see if the battery if running strong, or just check out whether your headlights are dim

Maintenance >> Such as changing of brake/clutch lever, clutch cable, brake oil, brake pads, brake discs/drum, washing of carburetor, changing of tyres, usually you can do it around once every 8 months - 1 year depending on how often you use your bike.
