should I turn off my external hard drive when not in use?

normally they should have some power saving mode that will stop the disk from spinning after a period of inactivity

heat(constant power) or life cycle(spin/stop/spin/stop).. prob either one will kill the ext hdd first

Guess external hard drive is like USB drive. Gotta take out when not in use.

 

Yeah true. It uses the same technology as USB drive except for the increase in capacity and size(duh). It allows hot-swapping(or also known as hot-plugging).

Everything is there for a reason.

No, external HDDs are very much different from USB thumbdrives. Thumbdrive you let it stay there, its not so bad. No moving parts. For external HDDs, the damn plates are spinning inside. Alot more moving parts. So just take out when you are not using.

Not sure if this thread is dead, but I happen to see this and like to chime in:

 

If your hdd doesn't spin down (you can hear it whizzing or spinning) when you are not actively using or accessing it, it means that the mechanical motor is spinning and will lead to mechanical wear and tear. However, if you are using a solid state drive (ssd), then you aren't quite prone to such mechanical wearing.

 

So, like what the others advise, when not in use, it is better to keep it unplugged :)
