Hi everyone,

I am considering getting saddlebags for my sportsbike. Has anyone here used it on a daily or regular basis? I am thinking of putting stuff like rain coats, rain shoe covers for 2 up riding. My concerns are security and the ease of moving through traffic once they are fitted. Recommendations for specific models would also help.

Lastly, which shops stock saddlebags in Singapore?

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

saddlebag is nvr secure lar.

ive tried bagster (looks bulky)

and

komine (looks nicer)

komine will hold its shape better

if u dont mind can buy those cruiser type. at least they are rain resistant.

one thing good about bags is they are soft. if u have no hard items in the begs, then no problem with squeezing in tru traffic. the beg may hit a car but it wont scratch them nor will u loose balance

how do i secure them? will mine has mods to it so it aint for the faint hearted. i made a side rack and bolt them up. punch a hole at the beg openings to secure a lock to it.

Thanks for the quick reply. Are those the bags on the Hayabusa in your photo? Do you mind posting more pics of your bags and the mods? Sounds interesting. I'm looking at the Nelson Rigg CL-900 Mini Saddlebags cos they are the smallest and narrowest that I can find.

http://www.motorcyclegear.com/parts/luggage/saddlebags_/nelson_rigg/cl900_mini_motorcycle_saddlebags.html

What is your opinion of these?

How about squeezing through traffic with your bags? Is it difficult?

Posted

yes. those are the begs that ive install on my ride.

for the moment i do not have any other pics to show.

n nelson rigs begs look like a beg wahahahha

komine has a harder outer shell that will look better on a sportsbike.

Not practical for Singapore due to rain and petty theft. Some bags (esp. those made of nylon) will smell and grow mouldy if not dried properly.

Without a rack, the bag will scratch the body panels.

rain

- true enough. i did consider this too so i opt for using a waterproof bag inside of the saddlebag. so one waterproof bag each for each of the saddlebag.

- the saddlebag itself will be soaking wet when rain

theft

- anything can be stolen on a bike. again do recall back. once upon a time, in singapore. arai , shoei etc locked inside the bike's box kena stolen. was broadcast on tv news.

- thats y i bolt my bags to the custom rack and punch holes on my bag on lock the zippers.

mold

- nope, no mould on mine but i expreience fading of colours

saddle bag in singapore ??

no point , many ppl with itchy fingers around

unless u touring up north ..

Posted (edited)

I have tried saddle bags before, they are insecure, unable to carry much weight, and a complete hassle to attach/detach as well as carrying around. In some cases, when u are cornering the saddle bag might even go in under ur tail and get scrubbed against ur rear wheel.

Have u considered using a tail bag? Like this one (bagster spyder):

http://www.bagster.com/photosshowroom/1204636352SHOW-%20Spider%20-%20sursellezoom%202.jpg

If u need more storage space, u can use an additional tank bag as well. In my opinion this setup would be better than using saddle bags - under comparison, u get roughly the same amount of storage capabilities, plus u can keep ur bike streamlined.

**EDIT

Sorry i did not notice u mentioned pillion riding. If all ur stuff can fit into a tank bag, that may probably be a better option.

Hi bro, i'm wondering, since u already made a rack for ur saddle bags, haven't u considered using proper pannier boxes instead? Wouldn't it be more secure and less risk of theft? Just curious.. :cheeky:

ive considered it before but have u ever seen or goggle pannier on a sports bike? it does not look good and i do squeeze thru traffic. yes on my busa. so its not really practical to have a hard pannier. its not always the beg is fully loaded.

so far for the past one year plus. my bike has been to jb and most of the time sleeping at car park. no theft at all as i lock it up as stated. my valuebles i always bring along with me. anyways begs are cheaper then pannier. if someone were to tear it up with i knife then i juz go ahead and buy a used one that usually cost less then $100 to replace.

- i think u have incorrectly mount ur begs. saddlebags when mounted are nvr near the wheels but i do read up some will touch ur exhaust.

- i have ever store like alot of market stuff in the begs. yes they will sag. no, they can carry/hold lots of weight

- i agree its a hassle to attach/detach. so my option is to make it permenant there. juz carry around my waterproof bag.

I got a friend, as can be seen here in the picture...

The saddle bag is GIVI T499....Never leave the bike when in Singapore,

Proven by the fading colour, it have been many years now.

So saddle can do its job....and a saddle is a saddle, nothing less nothing more...

But when traveling, he will bring the bag into hotel....

Just for your consideration..

I don't mind faded colours or less than perfect looks, but they gotta be small enough for me to squeeze through traffic relatively easily.

Hi Shahrul, do you mind posting a pic of your lock system as a reference for the rest of us to see how to make the bags secure? As for scratching the body work, some of the saddlebags have neoprene backs to rest against the rear panels. Would that be sufficient to prevent damage to the paint?

Oh yes, anyone knows where we can view/buy saddlebags in Singapore?

I have seen a busa in my campus with e21 panniers, in my opinion it doesn't look bad, but I guess this kind of thing is all up to individual :cheeky:

I used to use saddle bags on my R15, bcos the tail is quite narrow, the saddle bags actually sag quite low on both sides, when cornering sometimes will kena the wheel. And maybe mine was a cheap set, use a few times only the seams start to tear, can't take heavy weight. From then on i give up on saddle bags already... :cheeky:

lock system? sound very high tech like that. hahahha bro. its just two holes with rivets. using simple $3 lock each to lock it. so total i have four locks for the bags

the rear i had bolt it straight to my side rack

since i made a side rack for it , i dont use the "velcro ties" etc it came with so i just cut it off. ( there goes the resale value )

bro most saddlebags with come with a somewhat harder plastic for the below part. that serve to hold its shape and to prevent heat from exhaust to burn thru.

as u had said, i guess urs if just a low quality ones. as my bagster and komine has one each.

Just my opinion... Sportsbike with side panniers or saddlebags looks fugly...

yup. sportsbikes with anything bag or box do look ugly as its nvr meant for it.

when ive reach ur age uncle i will follow what u did. buy a true sports tourer.

sadly im juz wayyyyyy younger then u, cpf money still longggggg way to withdraw n my kids with other responsibility has to come first. ive only started to crawl the ladder at work so pay aint that great.

so what i have here is a bike. juz a couple of months to go and its free of loans. since its still metal n its not alive. do not have a soul too. i guess i juz have to live with it with my custom racks and bags. better ugly then broke right. at least with my ugly bike can follow u go thailand then getting another sports tourer juz tagging u for local coffee breaks.
