@ Lowyy: UPS for your courage!!! hope it was a good trip for u and hopefully everything went smooth with the bike ; )

@ Max: I believe our GTS is carb version . joyride is FI

@yuze90: rear shock is your bike rear suspension/spring loh. It helps to dampen any bumps that cause your wheel to hit the bike body.

Hey guys, do anyone experience back aches while riding our GTS 200? me and Alex seem to experience back aches often in our daily ride. For me, I'm standing at 1.75m tall.

For me personally, i thinking is riding posture which cause the back aches. Due to our heavy traffic, we tends to lend more forward rather than relaxing our back on the backrest.

Let share your thoughts ; )

Thats normal... i used to encounter the burning smell but no more.. not to worry bro, just ride ot..

Now my reason problem os my fuel comsuption is high...it used to ride till 360km with 110-130km riding speed but now 320km only...new airfilter was replace...

Could it be the carb?

Sorry our Gts200 is Fi or carb?

Thanks for the share!

May anyone tell me what does a full bike servicing for gts 200 comprises?

Great thanks!

Hi Lowyy,

Awesome.. maybe can share with us more or we could arrange a short trip to South malaysia next time... ;)

Hi Max,

I don't experience the back ache u mentioned, but i always remind myself to sit straight and rest my back against the back rest... sort of like sitting on a harley style... with legs straighten out. Im standing at 1.83, so perhaps shouldn't be about height.

Yes it happened to me sometimes.. I feel a little bit of back ache, for long ride.. im standing 1.8m ..

Yes we should lie to the back rest for better posture while riding.. Sitting too upright during ride might cause backache, cos of the strong wind from riding.

And yes, the default rear shocker of gts 200,maybe the problem..i feel It is quite stiff when going through hump and bumpy road. not as soft for the spring compared to other bike.

cheers.Once in a while should go for massaging! haha

Hi ,

Just curious, what does a rear shocker does?

Another question. i found out that, i do can smell rubber burning smell after a short ride too. Does it link to a spoiled rectifier, that why it is burning the battery?

thanks!Feel frre to share!

Rear shock is to absorb the bumps while riding on the road, to be honest if you are fine with your stock shock my suggestion is to stick with it.

I also have the burning smell when I just changed my belt, was told by the mechanic that my engine oil leak and water pump leak, I didn't repair on the spot as I was in a rush. Went to another mechanic, and was told that if water pump spoil, my temp will overheat, so far my temp bar max only 2 bars and my engine oil wasn't leaking in the first place. Burnt smell could be from the new belt. Since then I'm skeptical about what mechanics tell me. Best it's to do your homework and not believe everything that a mechanic says.

Morning fellow gts riders,

yeah... true to that alex... that's why we should unit in forum and share amongst ourselves on the whats/wheres/whys/whens/whos and hows of our ride.

I also felt the stock shock is abit too hard for my comfort... but not to the extend of changing to an aftermarket shock. In the manual it states it's set at manufacturer's default of 3, turning it clockwise will be to tighten it, and anti clockwise is to loosen it. Did anybody tried to do either? and how is the effect? I wanted to turn to try, but don't know what tools to use... it looks like there's some sort of hooking tools you need, no?

I adjusted mine when I was doing my servicing, hence no extra charges. For me, the stock setting is way too soft. Soft in a way that it offers almost no damping when the bike goes over humps. Turning it harder increases the damping effect and hence you can feel that the suspension "do exists".

Melvyn, I think that your suspension setting is too soft, you feel that it is too hard because of all the humps and bumps you feel on the road and the solution is to adjust the shocks harder (abit counter-intuitive I know). So far I have not heard of anyone else who complained that the stock shocks are too soft.

Having said that, I've adjusted to setting "4" and there was a noticeable improvement. However, the effect seems to be wearing off and the bike is starting to feel like it is on setting "3" already.

Sharing a few highlights of my recently concluded trip round Malaysia.

Basically, it was a graduation trip amongst 4 friends and we were partly inspired by the West Malaysian Loop Ride (http://wmlr2013.wordpress.com/)

The 4 bikes that went for the trip were my GTS, a Sliverwing, a Maxsym and a FZ1.

So obviously, the GTS was the smallest bike that went for the trip. It has no problems maintaining the 110km/h cruising speed of the convoy for distances up to 200km without break. However, it has difficulties accelerating back to the cruising speed once I need to decelerate for various reasons. The slow acceleration also made it challenging to overtake vehicles while travelling on trunk roads. With good timing and abit of experience, should be able to overcome the lack of acceleration.

In terms of fuel economy, I managed a FC of a range of 23 km/l to 28km/l. The GTS was surprisingly not the most fuel efficient bike while travelling in the convoy, the Maxsym has managed to achieve better fuel economy than the GTS in between every fuel stop.

In terms of handling, the GTS was nimble enough to handle the hilly bends along the Gerik Highway and the Cameron Highlands without much need for breaking.

As for the destinations,

1) Our first destination was the Sungei Lembing waterfall near Kuantan which was the location for the channel 8 drama "Kampong ties". The main attraction was the waterfall itself which is accessible via a 1.5 hours 4x4 vehicle ride and a 1 hour trek through the forest and a river. The view at the waterfall was worth the journey itself where a rainbow superimposes itself on the waterfall due to the reflection of the sunlight.

2) At Kelantan, we visited the Thai Malaysian border crossing at Jeli.

3) The most memorable riding experience occurred at the Gerik Highway which connects the east and west coast of Malaysia along the Thai-Malaysian border. The Gerik Highway is made up of countless long sweeping corners which cuts through the titiwangsa mountain range. It is refreshing to ride our bikes in cool mountain weather and the high speed corners were exhilarating and fun to play with. Elephants were said to be spotted crossing the roads however we were not lucky enough to spot one.

4) The highlight to Penang was a ferry ride from Butterworth to Penang Island.

5) Lastly, the highlight in Malacca was riding through the 129psi haze.

I posted this last week!

Since I've been thinking about it and a few people have mentioned it, I thought I'd share my thoughts.

Our SYM has a 5 way adjustable spring tension rear suspension. It is set at 3 (mid way) from the factory. Seems most want it stiffer so just use a pair of adjustable pliers and turn the metal tube that holds the spring clockwise. Looking at the rear suspension from the back of the bike, you'll see a notch on the coilovers-turn the coilovers so that the body of the coilovers is raised one step. The coilover is kept in place by the notch. Do the same adjustment for both sides! This will put more tension in the spring and prevent bottoming out when carrying a pillion, especially over bumps.

I've also set my current stock shock to "4" and indeed initially it felt better but as i ride longer, it seems like the same as "3" setting.

I recommend the Sym HD2i 200. 171 cc, twin Halogen headlights, front and rear disc, 16" aluminium wheels, flat front floor. Get it from Mah Motors and they include the Givi E45 box. There is thread on HD2.

To add on.. the bearing in the gear box.. if the bike start jerking and spark plug if the bike engine doesnt start smoothly.. always need at least 2 to 3 tries of using electrical start..

Wow, i dono know there is this adjustable setting for the suspension to go from hard to soft..

So softer or harder and changing to setting 4 is going to harder or softer the suspension ?which is better when going through hump, without feeling much backache after ride?

Thanks all for sharing!!

After watching the video, I found some other useful videos about the bike, thanks Melvyn.

But another video really put me off from changing my headlamp bulbs....removing the whole fairing to change a bulb or 2 is ridiculous! Unsure if the bulbs are accessible via the wheel area....
