There are quite a few techniques. Not boasting, but plank is one of my strongest courses.

What you can do is throttle + half clutch, and rear brake to get more timing. Towards the end of the plank, if you feel you want to achieve more time, clutch in and play the rear brakes. It will help achieve more time on the plank. I've got 16seconds if i remmbered correctly last time when I took my 2b haha.

For the rest of the maneuver courses, practice makes perfect. Smoothness is the key to riding. And confidence too. Go for revisions. I'd rather drop the plank in revisions, rather than in TP. :)

Another technique taught by instructor just before my prac 8 for plank is to go up, clutch in, play rear brake, let go of clutch a bit to lurch the bike forward when you are losing momentum and repeat. Low throttle all the way.

Passed my prac 8 already now waiting for rtt. Good luck to those taking their assessments/tp soon

Well congrats bro. All the very best for rtt & tp. Earliest L8 slot available for me is 27th & 29th Jan. So pass the time doing cr twice a week. RR also no slots available in near future. So booked them on 26th & 28th Jan 650pm slots.

It seems the tp slots are already for end march & being quickly snapped up. Im just gonna take my own sweet time... Cant escape extending my pdl which is expiring in mid feb.

16sec plank?? Wow!! You the man lah!!:clapping::bow: How did you do it?? Being stationary, revving engine & turning handlebars left & right included??

I used clutch in method, best time 8.06secs. That 1 also have to really wrestle with the bike towards the end. For 8 sec plank - cant lurch the bike. Hv to purely free wheel + rear brake play.

I later converted to half clutch method as recommended by Mr Bahtera after he saw my wrestling above & had a best ever of 8.6secs. I tried to be slower but ended up stalling on the plank quite a number of times.

Plank for me is a huge obsession. I have a Love-hate relationship with it. But its more satisfying doing a slow plank then a fast F8.

Instructor told me never to throttle-on-off during plank. I used to love doing that but he scolded and said I can easily lose balance and go off the plank. The correct method will still be clutch control, rev and rear brake throughout the plank to improve timing. Strangely, it used to be 1 of my weakness other than Fig 8 (main weakness) but I'm better at plank these days. Rev-ing the bike whilst braking allows it to slowly crawl and yet balance improve (I find it the more you rev, the stable the bike is, kinda strange).

Finally, going for TP on 21 Jan. Getting nervous and after this morning RR, instructor told another lady and me sure fail if we perform like that on actual test date. Having always taken night lessons, going for the day RR was an eye-opener. Traffic was horrendous, didn't even know on route 2 that we can keep all the way right after the U-turn if we see traffic ahead instead of the usual keep left then keep right after bridge. Strongly encourage those going for TP must at least go for a weekday morning prior to taking test else can possibly screw up big time.

Hahaha no lah, I just went really slow and maintain the speed. Rear brake was the key for me at that time.

Yeah, try to use the half clutch method, it works better. Just step on the rear brakes throughout, releasing and applying where needed.

Anw, for TP, once you're sure you have gotten the required timing, resist the temptation to still wrestle on the plank. Finish off the plank, and pass your TP, rather than showing off but end up dropping the plank and failing your TP. Just a reminder :)

Traffic at paya lebar is nuts during the day... maybe if your TP dates are around Chinese new year or christmas when alot of people are on leave... then maybe it will ease up a little... otherwise...

Finally started my practical 1. What a mess I am right now. Feeling a bit down. I fell 4 times. 3rd time, it landed on my foot. Instructor ask me to go for a break. He was teaching me one on one some more. I'm still at gear 1. I can't coordinate my hands and legs. Need to keep repeating to myself - "don't put right leg down, remember to break slowly". The reason for me falling cause I keep jam break. Think I might just need 5-6 lessons. When he ask me to drive in circle, feels like I couldn't maintain my speed. Keep jerking. It scares me when I feel my speed going too fast.

Can feel the instructor trying to be nice and patience and not shake head at me. Feeling very guilty that I'm very bad student. I don't even know what I'm typing.

When throttling on/off don't be too abrupt, you will jerk a lot that way. It's easier if you know how to ride a bicycle.

Babe try to remember what I've shared with you over whatsapp. Most of us will tell you "been there, done that". Falling down multiple times over the first few lessons, flying off the bike, bike landing on leg, harsh braking causing bike to drop or right leg down, bad hand and leg coordination, slow at learning, are one of the most common horror stories of a learner rider but they are perfectly normal. Most of us have experienced that before.

It's the body and mind getting accustomed to doing something new for the first time and muscle memory takes time to build. Go for lessons consistently, make mental notes (at home, before you execute a gear change etc), go for lessons with a open mind (that it's ok to fall and be slow), and have the never say die attitude.

Even at 2A, I still fell when I was learning. Even a Class 2 student may fall off the bike while learning too. Who cares? Nobody is laughing. Everyone's a learner. Some are faster at learning, others slower, but ultimately the end point is the same if you persevere. I'm definitely not talented at riding - I'm always the slower learner.

I remember instructors used to tell us they've seen people take as many as 9 times to pass for lesson 1. 9 times so what? If it's gonna take me 9 times to pass, I'll take it! You can do it!!!

Follow your heart even if sometimes it means losing your mind.

hey all,

stumbled upon this thread a few weeks ago - and was pouring thru tips from folks who either have passed or in the more advanced lessons.

thought i should give a shout out to everyone who is still going thru their 2b lessons... :) Good luck!!

for myself, I just cleared lesson 4 today - killer obstacles for me so far was figure 8 and plank. Cannot believe the amount of times i dropped off.

Going for circuit revision tomorrow (and a few more thru the week) - hope to stay on the plank - before i hit my lesson 5 on Sunday *sweat*

Thanks again to everyone who has so patiently typed in tips ... They have been very helpful in helping me clear my lessons...

Had a good cr session today. Everything swee swee. Achieved my personal best for F8 - 8.7 secs. So I entered my 1st L8 attempt today full of confidence. Sekali come F8 time, god knows how my crashbar scraped the tarmac & knocked cone during slalom. Wasnt doing anything unusual or pushing myself hard either.

Try again this 20th.

thanks JrCherish.... Thursday circuit revision - i will CAMP OUT at the plank section... *grinz*

I wont recommend such a practice. Too much of plank might affect your mobility for F8 & crank as your muscle memory will tend to stiffen you up.

Like you, I had problems with F8 & plank during lessons. So i dedicated 2 revisions doing nothing but F8 & crank until everything swee swee. Then I spent 2 revs doing nothing but plank & slalom until at least I had 50% plank success rate. But when I returned to do a F8 later I found I was always running out of kerbs. Eyeline was correct but body & arms not steering the bike. Everything like stiffened up. Took me another half hour in another rev session to get everything back together again. So what I do now is to do 1 F8 for every 3-4 planks.

Somebody did share with me the reason why the F8 & crank are done 1st whilst the plank & ebrake later. Cos the F8 & crank need more physical mobility whilst plank & ebrake is quite straight with limited body movement. It is easier to stiffen up rather than to loosen up. Hence the mobile courses are done 1st.

thanks jbdoggy - never thought of it like that before. but make sense that your muscle will stiffen on too much plank.

wondering what is the prescribed number of revisions to take before trying lesson 5...

just signed up for 830s on Saturday and Sunday. *LOL* i must be crazy - that means i have to wake up by 715 on the WEEKEND....

Circuit revision ...

Most of my circuits are at night since there are less people doing figure 8s then.

First half of lesson - figure 8 crank course

Second half - plank and slalom

Or vice versa.

Thanks jbdoggy. Haha. Just do 2 round plank then change

There are no prescribed number of revisions to take. Just take any number you want until you feel ready to go for it. But I had been advised before by our sis mica here to try going for it regardless just to get the feel & experience. True alsolah.... who wouldve thought that at the end of the session when you enter nursery to park bike, and the L1 people are going round & round, you stop to give way to them also kena 2pts for unnecessary stopping. Why? You can easily enter & turn right thus avoiding them altogether.

I will be down for cr this thurs 830am.

@dineze Most of my revs at 830am. Slightly cheaper. Few times at 430pm also. Ive tended to avoid the evening/night sessions as my night vision isnt so sharp + too many beginner drivers. I normally do 3 rounds full circuit. Then after that 1 F8/crank for every 3-4 plank/slalom.

My rr on the 26th & 28th will be at 650pm slots. Which evening/night are you next down? I suppose we can do a few revs together.
