hmm... when it comes to protection, nothing beats crashbar really. frames sliders as said is meant to protect the frame nia. most of the time you'll still kenna the engine/alternator casing. many examples. think ernie is one of them?

 

if the slider is too long, the damages is usually heavier than the protection. a long slider may protect the body work or engine components but in more serious cases, like in the photo will cause the mounting point to break due to the distance from the pivot point which gives it the mechanical advantage to amplify shock/impact.

 

good sliders claim to well, slide to prevent direct impact from hitting the tarmac. and some sliders are said to be designed to break off on harder impacts to prevent high sides or damages as seen in the photo.
