I will be trying to make a trip there and rent a small bike and have a 1-2 day ride in the area. Looks like a friendly bunch.

 

Is that your bike in the pic? I'm not too sure about putting metal boxes as side panniers on a small bike like this. I was thinking a metal box for the top case and soft luggage for the side. The wolfman soft luggage looks perfect for this but they are not available here unless someone knows where to get them.

Any suggestions from the crowd here would be welcome.

No it's not mine, just a photo I thought was nice.

 

I would go the same way as you, soft panniers on the side. On my current bike, I don't even have a top box. Top boxes uglify a bike, and I don't know why it's such a big deal in SG. The only top box I think with a nice look is the Trax.

 

Not sure who imports Wolfman. The main issue with soft panniers for SG commute is security. Most of them don't have a reliable locking mechanism if any at all. If only for touring, one can go without locks since most of the time you'll be a few feet from the bike or can carry the pannier with you in the hotel room.

 

I'm using Ortlieb waterproof panniers. Toured with them and now using them for normal day to day in SG. Perfect to keep the riding gear and laptop bag or groceries. Used a Pacsafe mesh bag around them to secure them. Not super good looking but super practical.

 

What I love about soft panniers is the light weight, and the fact that they take very little space and you can squeeze in traffic easily.

Yup - just did. Easier to consolidate it all in one separate post for the X. Don't think it qualifies as a naked bike anyway, that would be the CB400F.

anyway cb400x owners, does the bike gets heated up ard the tank area ie: where thighs grip the tank?

i've ridden cb400 revo for my 2a pract, and boy, that bike gets heated up and it leaves some red marks around my inner thighs.

it happened not only once, but quite a few times.

 

makes me think twice to buy revo. O.o

Revo is using a inline 4 engine with EFI, it should be used on a long distance not circuits like BBDC. I have friends owning Revo and having no problems

Hope other riders can share on how it is on the road. Wonder if there will be LTA-friendly pipes for this bike soon Guys bringing in the pipes, are you reading this?

 

But will freer flowing pipes reduce back pressure and in turn lose torque low to mid rpm ( which appears to be a selling point for this bike ).? Though mid to high rpm will improve. But theres also likely to be vibration issues due to reduced back pressure.

 

I think bikes with valve control systems also have the above issues but is less pronounced.

Agree with all of the above. I would not put a top box if I had a choice. Not only for cosmetic reason but I do not like anything that raises the center of gravity of the bike. Unfortunately, this bike, when I do get it, is meant to replace my car and will need to fulfill some practical requirements such as a lockable storage area. That's why I really like the NC700X with its built in false-tank storage. With a pair of Wolfman bags , there would be no need for any aluminum box. I always thought metal boxes only look good on the BMW GS bikes for some reason. Its almost like they designed the bikes with the panniers in mind.

However, I only have 2A bikes to choose from thanks to our beloved folks at the LTA who think their licensing system still makes sense. So 400X it is for now until I get a 2 license or I move to another country.

Only issue with those is that they cannot fit a full-face helmet. I blame it on my big head that I have to wear an XXL lid. Sigh...

 

I abandoned the hope of storing the full face. I use a braided steel cable and lock it to the panniers rack. The helmet hangs on the pillion's footpeg: not as obvious as if hanging from the tail or sitting on the bike, and so far, fingers crossed, it's always there when I get back to the bike. Was super anxious the first few weeks, but it seems to be a good way of locking it.

If it rains or suspect it will and I'm parked without shelter (which seldom happens, I will walk 1km to not park without shelter), I have a few huge plastic bags I wrap the helmet in so it's dry when I come back.
