Hmm.. I dont mind having a sports bike but I prefer a bike with quieter sound with speed. Fz16 has the sound but I'm not sure about its performance. And I heard that the mileage is a problem.

Posted

sp/krr are legend 2stroke bikes but require extra care as they are old. Top speed 160++ and sounds happier at high rev.

double the power double the fc.

why not the cbr150r and r15? almost problem free.

Posted

why not fz150i...hhahaha I'm selling :p

anyway, between Fz16 and sp, the fuel consumption varies greatly with SP being a two-stroker. SPs out there are also very old, so you have to be extra careful when buying one, if you do decide to get one. FZ16s are generally okay. Not a bad bike to start with, although I feel it is a little on the heavy side, for a 150cc 4 stroke engine.

I would still prefer a FZ150i which has better pick up and more economical fuel consumption, being fuel injected compared to the carburetor FZ16.

Definitely costs more to maintain a SP, so if you get it, you must really want it, or it can be quite a drag. Most petrol, more often, 2T oil, etc etc. FZ16 just the usual simple, cheap 4 stroke single cylinder maintenance.

my 2 cents~

u are comparing 2 different bikes on 2 side of the spectrum. fz16 is cheap to maintain low fuel consumption, average 2b street bike. while SP is a 2 stroke sport bike, will smoke fz16 anytime, but it cost more to maintain since it is a 2 stroke bike and SP are quite old already at least 10years+

Posted

That's why I'm reluctant to get an sp. It's definitely faster than fz but the maintenance is.. so yeah. I'm thinking more into fz16 now. Needed to know its pros and cons. Anyways thanks you guys. I roughly have an idea. Appreciate if I can get more info on the fz . :D

Posted

If u have money to burn on the sp then go ahead, but if money is a problem , save it by pumping oil then

Posted

who says maintenance is a pain for 2 stroke?

the diff is only the 2T.

Let me share my experience..

When I was a newbie rider, not long ago (2012), SP was among my considerations apart from fz16, r125 (yes, the european one), r15 and duke 200.

In the end, I followed my heart and went for an SP (100% stock) that was manufactured circa 1999. I knew that being an old smoker, the maintenance would be higher. But as I had a full-time job, I believe I was prepared for the additional expenses.

I rode that bike for about 1 year and it has never failed me. I almost always rode it hard (but not recklessly!), and it has never broken down on me before. The only things which were replaced were those wear and tear items like;

clutch and throttle cables (~$55) - for a peace of mind

clutch plates (~$70) - wore out

headlight bulbs (~$7/pc) - as they were blown,

speedometer cable and tachometer cable (~$15-18 each) - as they snapped

Yuasa Battery (~$25) - as current battery showed signs of deterioration

Apart from the above, I had a strict maintenance regime, like every 3 months or 3000km, I'd get the gear oil and plug changed, carbs cleaned and tuned and valves serviced. It all came up to about $55-$70.

On top of that, I used a high quality 2T, Motul 710 which costs about $25/L if you know where to look. And it lasts me about 1 month. The fuel consumption of my bike was about 20 km/L when ridden hard, about 24-25km/L if I rode it normally.

Of course, besides that, you need to do some due diligence which applies to any motorcycle, like regular cleaning and lubing of chain, maintaining the correct air pressure in your tyres so on and so forth.

To summarise, my SP was a joy to ride (goes to 140kmph with relative ease) as it never gave me any problems. I rode it all over the place and never had any regrets getting it more so since it wasn't half as bad as I expected it to be. I am glad to have experienced riding a 2 stroke smoker before it goes extinct.

Ps. Do try to get a stock SP if you can. Modifications, especially those that aren't done properly, can give you major headaches.

I've been thinking about getting an sp as well. But over heard that maintenance will be a pain for it. You sound like you know quite alot about the sp. Will the parts be harder to get now that it's no longer in production? I just started my 2b course and I've been eying the sp for awhile.

FZ16ST is probably one of the nicest 2B bikes around.

Used to ride a SP, but that series of SP bikes will be >10 years old now.

With old bikes (and usually multiple owners), you will be hard pressed to find one in good mechanical condition.

Well, it's rideable but the major components like suspension and forks are on the way out if hadn't.

SP is a nice looking bike (at least it was back then) , but dont be swayed too much by the looks if its a potential wallet burner.

If you would like to ride the bike for a few years, then buy a FZ16ST. Put a box and still looks nice.

All the convenience.

I'm only gonna ride 3 years max though. Have plans to upgrade. Maybe I'll go for krr instead if I can't find an sp in relatively good condition. But those parts you mentioned, replacing them will cost around how much? ~$500?

@dantsw : I don't know alot as my SP didnt give me any problems and I had it only for 1 year. I believe parts for SP shouldn't be hard to get. I know that FJT still has parts for SP as I had a friend who re-built his SP and he got most if not all his needed parts from FJT. Like what constructicon said, you'll be hard pressed to find one in good mechanical condition so take your time to look for your SP. For me, I was viewing about 2-3 SPs, 3-4 times a week for a couple of months. I preferred getting it from private sellers as compared to shops due to pricing and some other reasons.

OK. I'll take that into consideration. Thanks. I think I got lobang in msia for sp parts. Just need to see if when I get my license, there'll be any more acceptable SPs around

be careful of imitation stuff across the border. They are rather inferior, compared to OEM parts.

Just get a FZ16, will save on petrol, 2T and resale. Your SP/KR/TZM will drink a lil more, require 2T and has crap resale.

Want power, get a bigger displacement, your FZ16 will still be good as a sidebike even if u upgrade, your SP/KR/TZM will only add to the burden because they are usually abused, I know, I abused my TZM, its a 2 stroke, its more fun till the power valve blew out of the block, the conrod bearings blow, the CDI melted yada yada so many issues.

FZ16

-good fc

-not bad looking

-machiam 2a bike (size)

-put box looks ok

-4 stroke

-easily available

-launched afew years back (3-4years iirc)

-will be slower than sp or other 2 strokers.

SP

-good looking

-barely average fc (depends on rider and bike)

-can be problematic unless u really take care of it

-takes awhile to search for a good 2ndhand

-considerable fast for a 2b bike, easily reach 150, top can reach 180

-position can be tiring for some

-2 stroke

-10+ years
