MotoGP legend Wayne Gardner made a welcome return to the paddock at Phillip Island where he had the opportunity to get a taste of 4-stroke grunt with the Repsol Honda team.

 

The 1987 500cc World Champion, who turned 46 on Tuesday, is attending his home Grand Prix this weekend and enjoyed the chance to compare his Championship-winning Honda NSR 500 to the 990cc Honda RC211V, completing four laps of the dazzlingly fast Australian circuit.

 

“That felt great, I really enjoyed that ride, even if I would have liked to clock a few more laps,” said Gardner after hopping on Max Biaggi’s RC211V. “These 4-stroke bikes have nothing in common with the old school 2-strokes… What impressed me the most is the fact that the bike handles so well when there is so much power available.”

 

The Australian, who won 18 Grand Prix in the premier class from 1986 to 1992, was also able to catch up with former team-mates and enjoyed a chat with HRC rider Nicky Hayden.
