Hi everyone!

I'm a 19 y o Male, and I passed my 2B last year Aug,(about 6 months now). I'm very interested in KTM 200 duke. Can anyone help me to break down how the process of owning a bike is going to be like? Cause now I blur like sotong donno where to go. I'm looking for 2nd hand btw.

Questions in my mind includes:

1) Min downpayment

2)Insurance(last I checked for a duke 200 reg in aug '12 was 1.1K)

3) Specific bike shops

4) Maintenance of the bike

Thanks for your input!

newbie shouldn't get such a expensive 2B bike. add abit price can get 2A bike already can get cb400x look much nicer just wait til u get 2A and get something nice, unless it is a really good deal. if you are getting 2nd hand bike aviod going to shop, they will charge u ex compare to buying from someone else. just look at garge sales. maintenance for 2b 4 stroke is cheap u can go planet if u wan the cheap and reliatable service shop.

insurance wise don't think there is any cheap insurance for p plate. have to wait 2 years experience to get diretasia which is very cheap compare to the rest. Or u can get someone with 2 year experience to buy insurance then be the sub rider

I just bought a third hand Phantom recently so I can help you out. Here's the list of things I did in order:

1) Browse garage sales, sgbikemart, ebay, gumtree etc for your ideal bike.

2) View the bike, ride it around the carpark to get a feel of it. Bring your helmet or borrow his or something. Inspect the bike; download the manual if you can find it to help you figure out what the important parts are.

3) Once you decide to buy the bike, make arrangements with the owner to meet a few days later. Meanwhile, go get your insurance. Start date should be before or on the day you are buying the bike from the owner.

4) Meet the owner, go down to LTA and do the bike transfer. A small fee (I think $15) was charged. After transfer is done, pay the owner at LTA.

5) Buy carpark season parking and protective gear.

On test rides: I just sold a bike recently and would like to highlight that test riding while viewing is not legal and the owner is not obligated to let you test ride it, even if it is just around the carpark. What happens if you happen to fall?

While you may like to think that you'd be responsible enough to pay for the damages, the hassle of it all is enough to deter owners from even thinking about letting you go for a spin.

IF the owner allows you to test ride the bike, it is his or her courtesy and discretion. Be thankful, but don't start whining or accusing if the owner doesn't allow you to.

On protective gear: It is important to get good gear. Try not to save on these things. You don't have to get full racing leathers but I reckon a decent mesh jacket, good helmet and gloves would be the basic stuff to get. People usually feel that wearing full gear on a 2b bike is overkill, but unless you're a class 2 speedster, chances are, if you fall or get hit, 2b/2a or 2, you'll be going at the same highway speeds regardless of class or bike.

Dress for the fall, not for the ride!

Directasia only cover insurance for age 25 and above. In TS case, he would have to wait another 6 years.

What you said about protective gear sounds VERY familiar.......o_O

And also, regardless whether you fall from a 2B or class 2 bike, you fall on the same road.

Honda CG145, Honda CB150R ExMotion. And a few others in between...

Totally agree. Safety first and live to ride another day

The 'dress for the fall..' bit was something the instructor said during my 2A theory at SSDC haha.
