Found out something really scary today.

My rear tyre was found to be flat during lunch. Spun the wheel around looking for the object that punctured it but could not find any.

Reinflated the tyre and what a shock I got. There was a leak coming from the base of the charging valve stem where it sits on the rim. Sounds like no big deal.. but I could have crashed the bike because of this!!

Let me clarify first... I recently changed my tyres and changed the tyre valve from the standard stem type to those that angled at 90 degrees outboard, for easier inflating.

I then went to Sepang for the weekend about 2 weeks ago. I noticed that after the track session.. the rear tyre pressure dropped quite a few psi. Charged it up at the station and parked at the hotel. Next morning... checked tyre pressure... still the same.

Go for second track session and after session... tyre pressure dropped again. Charged up at station and rode back to Singapore. Checked the pressure again... slight drop only so recharged the tyre... next few days no pressure loss... today at lunchtime... totally flat.

The frightening part is..... when I was happily blasting down the back and front straight at 200 kmh plus... the centrifugal forces generated at that speeds by the spinning wheel was bending the tyre valve. Because of the 90 degree bend.. the valve is actually heavier on one side, the centrifugal forces were like trying to bend the valve cap down towards the rim, causing the valve stem to pivot at the base where it sits on the rim allowing air to escape!!

Slow speed... not enough centrifugal forces... no bending of valve... no leaks.

But today's total deflation was caused by air escaping through the poor seal at the valve base over a period of time.

As now I reflect on what has happened... I could have crashed due to flat rear tyre at Sepang at one of the high speed corners without knowing why the rear stepped out. :faint:

Those with the angled tyre valves with a rubber stem... watch out if you have fitted it on your sports bikes. Better go back to the standard vertically installed kind like I just did.

PS - have to dismount the tyres from the rim to change out the valves.

Thats why it is also not recommended to put those nice shiny metal valve caps. They are slightly heavier than the normal plastics ones. But the little increase in weight, at high speeds, can cause the valve seal to be pushed down, thus releasing air.

Scared my self shitless today at Pasir Gudang.

Was following chasing after another bike down the front straight... as we approached Turn One we caught up very quickly with one of the newbies on the track.

The newbie then drifted wide to allow the bike I was following to take the quick inside line... and I told myself 'Good.. I can follow the same line now since this guy has decided to take the wider line'.

As I banked over to take the inside line.. the newbie decided instead of taking the corner using the outside line... he decided to dive in and clip the apex of the corner.

We were headed for a collision course!!! I hit the front brakes...fearing to overcook it and my balls came to my throat. I must have missed his rear wheel by millimetres.

No.. I did not cuss and swear at him, neither did I chase after him... I was riding very slowly after that to allow my balls to go back to where they belong.

Roughly how much you spend depends on the depth of your pocket.

You could bring a Cub Kia or a Hayabusa to the track... how many money you gotz is all that matters. :thumb:

As much as I can.. I don't go to the track with the thoughts of going to buang.

I ride on a track because it is a safe place to ride fast, break speed limits without worrying about cops or losing my licence, no mad taxidrivers, when I overshoot a corner... it is a gravel or sand pit.. not a bus stop, kerb or oncoming car. I go to the track to sharpen my riding skills and enjoy my bike. I don't push my luck or my abilities.

But if you go to the track with the intent of breaking the lap records... then be prepared to buang. The fastest way one can go around a corner is at a speed which is on the verge of crashing.

Choice of bike for PG?? I have seen 400 cc bikes blowing the crap out of 1000 cc bikes (me included), I have seen supermotards go through corners like everyone else was standing still, I have seen 250cc two strokers leave 600 cc bikes smelling smoke.......... what you looking for??

Unfortunately, I crashed out today on the 11-12 session. I saw U talking to NoLogicOne before u left. I arrived late.

My mistake on this one. I was tailing (TAILGATING more like it! Stupid me!! :slapforehead: ) Red Rocket on his 998S. Approaching T2, he had a false neutral and jammed his brakes hard.

I was like 2 or 3 bike lengths behind and still closing. Saw him suddenly coming into my face, I couldn't go inside him, too fast. I had to go outside him, but he was using all the track already.

Braked as I pulled down left... but not enough.. Went onto the grass, and into the sand. Lowside.

Damage: Left clip on snapped off, side stand bent... spring gone, left signals gone. Fairings all scratched.

Surprisingly, all the damage is superficial! Admit it was kinda lucky, since I was topping 180 on the approach. I must have slowed a lot to get such minimal damage.

Too bad my leather jacket left sleeve rolled up and I took in LOTS of abrasions on my left forearm. But other than that, I'm ok. Now awaiting replacement parts and a respray. :weep:

I know of 3 bikes that laid down in the run off gravel area during the first session.

No injuries to anyone though... that is what makes riding on a track so great.. so much safer than the streets. Saw 2 enter the gravel when they overshot but did not lay the bike down. I guess every one wants to push their limits.. but its got to be done one step at a time.

Bike can replace parts and respray... the important thing is... you are OK.

To get away with superficial damages considering you were topping 180 at the approach..count your blessings.

You will be back again... I am sure of that. Its in the blood.

Heal fast and see you soon. Take care Bro.

Was asking NoLogicOne if he was going to PG tomorrow too.. told me his wife would alienate him if he did. Me going with Tashi, Ken, AT and Chilly tomorrow morning. I must be nutz.

Yeah. I heard that 3 bikes went down in the early session. Really tough day.

Now licking my wounds... the muscles are really gonna hurt tomorrow. I can already feel it coming.

Cost of replacement parts should approx

The respray is the expensive one... ard $700.

Downtime approx 3 weeks.

U mentioned going down in T12 last time? How much was your damage and respray costs?
