don't lane split doesnt mean it is safer 100% of the time. there are suitiation where u should lane spilt and overtake the car infront for example some @$$hole driver tail gating u for no reason. I even encounter cars forcefully cut me from the left when i am at first lane.

 

1 good reason why I like overtaking cars is u dont have to keep checking left or right where some stupid driver cut u for no reason, just have to look infront. Rarely u will see cars abrupt change lane at high speed. they usually do it when someone brake infront so it is more dangerous to lane spilt at low speed imo since more cars change lane.

 

If really want to be safe better ride those 3 wheel scooter with shelter.

 

look at this video, in US there is some states lane spiltting is illegal and there is more motorcycle accidents than those states that lane spiltting is legal.

i don't lane split, keep safe distance, be aware of vehicles around you i.e. the goondu drivers

 

That's 1 of the safer ways to ride, I do that most of the time as I always leave early. Won't have to be rushing from point A to point B, but I will start lane splitting once there's a jam ahead.

I like how they explain in the video about lane splitting and I get your point as well, but as you mention, all we need is to be at the wrong place at the wrong time whereby the driver swerve out just to avoid getting into an accident in front of the vehicle.

Nice, thanks, but does anyone actually faced a situation like this, whereby you brake so hard that it locks, and which motortiam can i go to to buy and install 1 of this safety gadgets ?

I believe it already comes installed on certain selected bikes by manufacturer. Usually 2A and above. :cool:

Ah, good and bad, good that it comes with big bikes, no need to hassle on finding 1, bad that i'm riding a 2b bike, got to wait then

Perhaps when you have more riding experience OTR you will know why riders really lane split. :rolleyes:

 

As for me it is to get as far away from the goondoo drivers and to spend lesser time OTR. The more time you are OTR to get from point A to point B the higher your chances of getting in trouble with goondoo drivers. Our roads have an abundance of goondoo drivers rather than considerate and cautious ones. But that is my take on things. Agree or disagree is up to you. :cool:

 

It's a balance between riding at a reasonable speed and reducing/minimizing TED: Time Exposed to Danger.

I agree. It's safer to ride from Point A to B at 90km/h vs. 75km/h simply because you spend less time on the road, ASSUMING you can safely handle the bike and traffic conditions at 90km/h just as well as at 75km/h.

Well said, but for me, I'm not very good in lane splitting, I'm still having issues whereby at times I don't think I have enough space to maneuver between the cars, and after awhile, i would just give up and go back into a lane.

 

Can anyone give me tips on lane splitting, especially when there are heavy vehicles nearby, like buses or lorries.

Only split if you are 100% confident. Its not a must. Don't feel pressured to do it just because everyone else is.

 

Low speed control helps. Like narrow plank in your classes, clutch and throttle control is key, and it helps if you drag your rear brakes to modulate speed. Keep your weight on the pegs to lower your CG. Don't let your legs drag along the ground. Use your body weight to steer and keep your eye point 2 cars ahead.

 

Keep the horn and front brake covered and try to glance into mirrors and front wheels of the cars as much as you can to predict if someone's gonna change lane. Watch out for gaps in traffic, because if there's a gap, someone's gonna take that gap, even if he's 2 lanes away.

 

It helps if you know the limitations of your bike (I.e width) try not to stay next to a heavy vehicle for too long. They can't see you at all. And won't feel you if they run over you.

2. Aim not to hit the mirrors of other vehicles. If hit, be prepared for compensation. Don't complain.

3. Travelling speed in lane spliting cannot be double the speed of vehicle next to you, else if the vehicle in front suddenly lane change you will hit him - you won't have sufficient time and distance to react.

4. Do not travel side by side to the vehicle next to you.

5. Do not hog the lane. If you see a queue forming behind you, you are hogging the lane. Get off the lane quickly and safely so that others can pass by.

In time you will get it. Its like predicting the next move of other road users. For now just ride within your capabilities. :D

 

For me I usually observe the driving of the drivers. If its erratic then I shall not want to be beside or behind the driver. Chances are the driver is too occupied with something else than safe driving. If the driving is stable and smooth then I will lanesplit. When you see someone lanesplitting faster than you just slow down and move to the side safely to let the person through. Do so only when it is safe. I believe the other rider will understand. Only unreasonable ones will want you to move aside even if its not safe to do so yet. Encountered those before as well only to be ahead of them when traffic comes to a crawl. :cool:

Your point 3 and 4 seems to contradict. Definitely will not be twice the speed but definitely faster than the vehicle beside. If not faster will end up side by side as stated not to do in number 4. Nice, thanks for the tips, yes, i will go back into lane ASAP once i am hogging the lane splitting lane, or sometimes, once i see a bike coming from my mirror i will start to look for opportunities to go back into lane so as not to hog them. I guess on expressway I'm ok with it as the spaces in between lanes are pretty sufficient, what about lane splitting in normal roads, I have a problem with those, cause most of the time, the spaces in between looks barely enough for me to go through, no doubt once i stop, i can actually use my legs to push the bike through, psychological effect probably :?

 

As there was once when i was on ECP and this huge ass lorry suddenly move closer to me, i panicked and tried to squeeze away from it, resulting me in brushing against another car, luckily, it was at low speed and it was my wheels that brush against the other car, so no damage done, i apologize and we went off. Another was, like my first accident, where i was lane splitting for the first time as there was a massive jam, and out of no where, this lorry signaled once and starting swerving into the other lane, resulting me in E brake, but it wasn't enough, so i squeezed the front brake harder. It was enough not to hit the lorry, but my bike starting wobbling and i fell. From then on, I started to have this mini fear when i lane split.

The idea is that if you're moving, your foot shouldn't touch the ground at all. Happened to me too. Low speed, try to balance by touching the floor, bike ended up steering and my leg brushing a BMW. (No damage to me or the car)

 

I think lane splitting relies a lot on common sense and situational judgment. There is no hard and fast rule to it. Ride safe and be alert 100% at all times. :D

 

Oh, and there's a diff between filtering and lane splitting. Filtering is when traffic is stationary and you filter thru to get to the front (I.e traffic light). I always try to filter all the time coz its much safer at the front instead of among cars and drivers who are busy checking their phones/changing radio stations as they move off. Filter to the front, lights turn green, we **** off asap into clear roads and everyone is happy.

 

Lane splitting is when traffic is moving and we make progress through traffic. Usually, if traffic is light and smooth, I will stay in my lane and ride in a defensive but dominant position where I am able to take evasive action if needed. But if traffic bunches up, and the cars behind are gonna start following me very closely, that's when I split so I avoid a rear-end situation both in front and behind me. And also to make progress through the jam. :)

Rider lane split for reasons. Riding a motorcycle is already a risk. You can ride super defensively but we still open to risk and accident anytime. Importantly is always stay alert, be it lane split or you are in lane. Always make sure your brake system is working fine or upgrade your brake system for better braking. Braking system is very important. You may also want to install a loud horn to warn those drivers that didn't check their blind spot when they change lane.

Rider lane split for reasons. Riding a motorcycle is already a risk. You can ride super defensively but we still open to risk and accident anytime. Importantly is always stay alert, be it lane split or you are in lane. Always make sure your brake system is working fine or upgrade your brake system for better braking. True, I'm always alert and predicting the next actions of the drivers, and my horn, no doubt isn't very loud, but it's enough to wake stupid drivers up when i'm in danger, tested before :sweat:

Just take your time. With experience you will know when it is safe for you to lanesplit or not. No rush. Without knowing you will gain the ability to brake and press the horn simultaneously. Also the clutch for some. ;)

Ha, all my accidents are related to lane split, maybe cause i'm a noob :pity: But nevertheless, I will try to lane split more to gain experience and knowledge from it.

 

Don't ever queue with the cars. If the car behind you fails to stop in time, you will be the meat in a metal sandwich.

I have been doing that since i pass my 2b, if you guys are on the expressway and you see a kawa klx 125 queuing behind cars, it's probably me. Don't forget to say HI !
