I supposed for tricky suspension issue like cartridge piston and shims can look for David's help. Otherwise for regular servicing, most mechanics should be well-verse enough.

If you know a bit of history, David also told me he cleared up quite a number of "suspension specialist" 's mess.

that i'm afraid you have to take it with a big pinch of salt though.. i have actually seen some messed-up suspension sent to another suspension specialist to clean-up the mess..

it's always the case of 'A' mess up and 'B' have to clear it up for him/her.. it goes round and round...:giddy:

Prior to visiting "suspension specialist" and David, I have problem with compression damping in my fork. Even at maximum setting, the damping effect cannot be felt and overall they feel spongy.

After David serviced the fork cartridge, I tested both compression and rebound damping. Finally "soft" is soft, "hard" is hard.

So far, I have only ride on the road and have not tested the forks at the track. According to David, a heavier spring will speed up both compression & rebound action. Therefore, he added in a extra shim to "slow down" the cartridge action and increase the damping effect.

After he fitted back the forks, he maximize rebound damping and bounced the front end once so I can clearly see the rebound damping effect after the service.

Maybe because my forks originally had problems, that's why I felt a big difference after the services. Maybe I was lucky to catch David on a day where he was in good mood or wasn't drinking but at least he was humble and knowledgeable to entertain my queries on suspension.

By the way, you only need to change ur fork seal when they start to leak and not like some "specialist" who claim that they need replacement with every fork service.

I dun mean to say "they" are good or what but seals must be changed everytime u do any kind of dismantling.

Be it seals or gaskets, they have to be replaced whether they leak or not.

Hope that helps.

erm, i think you got that wrong.. you HAVE to change the seals once the fork is taken apart. the seals will have minor tears on the lips, thus the need for a change of seals.

when they start to leak, it's actually too late. reason being you have over-utilise the service-life of the seals, fork oil. increasing the wear rate of the fork in the process of doing so.

hope this helps..

Guess mine was too late. I only serviced and changed my fork seals when one of it started to leak... :giddy:

if a customer send in a suspension item to service, and did inform the techician there's a prob with it, say leaking oil, the technician is supposed to diagnose the problem and retrify it. if it involves more work than what is pre-stated, the technician has to inform the owner before proceeding on.

if upon technician's retrification, the problem still exist, means either the technician didn't diagnose properly OR didn't do the job properly.

a good technician will do a complete diagnose on the item being serviced whether the owner did inform the technician if there's any problem. if the technician just do what is requested by the owner, then he shouldn't be called a specialist at all.

Just curious.. I'm so sorry.. You mean you ACTUALLY had David serviced your bike/ suspension before?? I heard that you go around all the shops in sillypore and never do anything locally, but in Msia? David now based in Msia? Can find David at Bapok lane or JB ah Boy?

Anyway, I too had heard many many failure stories done by David. WEll, to be fair, he does have his 'good' days and does decent suspension work. As for tuning of bikes.. Hmm.. Not too sure about that. Just my very honest 2cents worth.

Laters.

I juz passed my 2B 2 weeks ago...

i m sure got some failure of David doing things but David is consider top suspension expert in s'pore. Some more u olso cant doubt his tuning of bike.he is quite gd in it too. From wad i knw some biker like cheap & gd is very rare to get in tis world too.

Let not get too carried away..

Maybe I was lucky to catch Teck Thye's David on a "good" day at a "good" time.

I supposed there are always "2 sides to a coin".

Generally my advice for suspension issue is to inform the mechanic of the specific problem (i.e leaking, loss of damping) and ask him what the problem can be before disassembling and servicing.

Then after the service, check for the problem again. If it recurs within a month, most mechanic will gladly re-do everything for you.
