I used to ride an NX650 Dominator for 6 yrs till 2 months ago. Lots of vibration on the bike handle so I used a manual cruise control to rest my hand - be careful, remember to toggle off when not needed. In fact, single-cylinder bikes tend to vibrate more. I had a 185cc single and it also vibrated till my right wrist felt like breaking off on a trip up to Penang.

No engine problems with my Dommie bike, though the engine's pretty tired cos the previous owner went Bangkok three times with it. Not sure about your engine.

The seat gave me the biggest problem - my butt hurts after an hour into riding, forcing me to stop every hour. So I added extra padding and widened the seat, especially for my pillion/wife.

I used Metzeler road/front and Tourance/rear for added safety. Also, my top speed is only 170kph, a bit slow for NSH. The slower it is, the longer I had to stay on the road to be tortured by the vibrations.

I also had a 22-litre Acerbis fuel tank for added travelling distance. 22 x 20 km/l = 440 km. Good enough to reach KL after topping-up at GP Esso.

Hope this helps even though it's not the same engine.

used, fj1100, xs650, triumph 500, bmw r65, r100rs, r60 and r80 before, since i bought a falcon back in 2006 i havn get back on my BMW whch is in the garage, instead just sell 05 falcon and buy an as new 07 falcon (5500 km when bought), will be fiting a new mikuni TM 36 on it, already have a leovince on it.

All the engine accessory that is fitted on the XR400 can accomodate the NX4, its in fact the XR400 engine but with electric start and a different carb. (Clutch, carb, cylinder sleeve, piston, iridium spark, sprocket… that fit on the xr will fit on the NX4)

All original parts can get at boon siew singapore.

What i can say is its the perfect bike for those who dont need to ride at speed above 120km/h. Light and powerful bike like the XR. Lower seat than the XR. Perfect bike for long ride, if you are above 80kg you will have to upper the front part of the seat, put vesconylon or elastomer busher on front fork spring and adjust rear shock absorber to your weight. Michelin Anakee is the perfect complement to this bike. (140/80-17 rear and 100/90-21 front) I use the bike for on road and offroad everyday, sand soil and gravel. Out from factory can easily do wheelie on 1st and 2nd gear, very little adjustment can be made with original carb. MAX speed of 138 km/h, if forced from 3rd gear to fifth can reach 142 km/h can reach higher speed with sprocket change only, all this with no modif to engine or carb or exhaust or CDI. Very simple engine for servicing everything almost very accessible compared to the BMW (i know they are not comparable) the only thing not accessible on the NX4 is the spark plug!! Must be very careful on spark plug change as gravel can fall inside cylinder, the trick is to have a dentist mirror an old mother wool needle and grease to remove the small gravel next to the fitted spark plug then on removal hold the start button for air pressure to push any unwanted dirt or gravel off. In its category i give the NX4 9.7 out of 10.

One more thing NO VIBRATION AT ALL ON THIS BIKE. Those who says their bike vibrate are those who buy more than cheap tyres!!!!

Use fake exhaust on left side as lpg tank and use lpg for very long rides instead of fuel. LPG vapourised fit next to carb on right side, move rear brake oil reservoir closer to air filter box. LPG intake get in before carb in the place wher the plastic detonation attenuator fit on the left between airfilder box and carb beneath seat next to fuel reservoir.

hi Billyjames, seek yr advise. My Nx4 the filter box top cover is missing from the bike. I open the seat and I see the filter media itself with no cover.

According to Ah Beng Bikeworkz maybe previous owner do that to get more move-off acceleration etc but now bike has problem sustaining constant cruising speed.

Boonsiew no stock for the filter box cover. Any ideas what i can do? Is there any after-market air filter like the eg. cone ones we use for cars etc that can be fitted on my bike to replace the whole air filter box?

Thank you in advance Bro.

If any other Bro/Sis have any ideas for my air filter box, I would really appreciate your comments. Thanks!

dude...i dont think your inconsistancy on cruising is caused by the airfilter cover...bcoz honestly,it was my idea to removed the cover...:cheeky:

the bike does well after removing the cover at that time...no hiccups...it would be better if able to replace aftermarket airfilter and at the same time,i think you need to get XR400R carb and do some rejetting...

people are letting go those carbs cheaply as most have upgraded to FCR...

range for a 2ndhand XR400R carb is about $100...

how's your fork seal?hope its done...

Use a peice of acrylic/Perspex, asoft one, use hot air blower to make the form and laser cut and drill to fit. the original carb will get into trouble without the original airbox and filter, The NX4 is a special bike with it carb, hot oil vapour, intake and decompressor. but can still be converted back to a normal xr bike. it will be best for you to have the airbox fixed.

can i have a pix of the actual airbox?? when you say airbox cover you mean the part which is hold with 4 philips screw?

if not that part then you are talking abt the snorkel, thats ok then just need to adjust mixture to accomodate the loss of depression occuring with this big hole and richen a bit the mixture.

You can still order, will receive it in some month.

Billyjames> Yup, its the cover held by some screws... I will check with Boon Siew for an indicative price for it before ordering.

Just half hr ago I collected the bike from Bikeworks. They modified and built a simple cover for it as temp measure. I have not even seen it as I was rushing. Now the bike's power is more controlled, more engine braking and accrding to Bikeworks the spark plug doesnt blacken up already. The exhaust roar is also much less TP-attention-seeking (using twin Husqy).

I will update with pic as soon as i can.

AJ> I will source for the used xr4 carb as well in case the OEM part is too ex.

The fork seal.... the bike used to sway up and down like ship, man... now nicely rigid. Thanks for your help yesterday.

If any NX4 riders out there see me on the road, pls do wave yah? Will post my bike pics soon. :)

yup...its the snorkle...but the nx one looks slightly different frm XR...

since now his NX is not using stock pipe, and its a dual husqavarna mufflers,it needs to have more air intake to breathe...using the stock airfilter already not having to accomodate more air intake,so the only best way is to remove the snorkle...except that, the jettings of the carb is still not done except for tuning...

Paradigm...initially,the project i did for him was halfway done...bcoz what was built to the NX is actually what i would be doing to the NX if its mine...but since he is a friend,i help him alittle...hoping he would learnt a thing or two while riding the bike...but eventually, what i stop doing,is still left that way 2yrs later becoz he basically just use it for transport and happy with it.

What i had plan to do with it actually, and was hoping he would figure it out someday, which he didnt....was to change the carb, change the fork springs or at least use a thicker grade of fork oil,and get the rear shock done...maybe a change of shock would be better...

the snorkel on the NX is glued but can still be removed it is not hold with screws!! Peice of rubber with 3 hole could have only cut the seperation between the 3 air passage would have been enough. With too much air the engine will get hot and will require close oil change interval unless put an oil cooler on the bike. Fuel has also a role on the engine temperature not only on performance!!

Yep I understand, - Fork: put hard elastomere spacers on top of both spring, 15 mm should be enough unless the rider is more than 85 kg and if the bike is old, rear shock spring is adjustable so adjust. This elastomere spacer tips i get it from John @ Boonsiew, experienced and ready to help, many thx John.

Symptoms for clutch change: No neutral

Symptoms for front brake pads change if no visual check: kind of "potok potok" when/after braking which seems to come from the suspension or the handlebar

Symptoms for oil change: Rough gear shifting and even gear jumps, gear not shifting well and jump back to previous gear on acceleration but does hold well after reengaging with good grip on clutch lever

NEVER EXCEEDS 5000 KM between oil change even if its a high grade fully synthetic oil

Put a MIKUNI TM36 on your bike or a TM38

never OVERLOAD YOUR BIKE!!!! should not be having trouble with front fork spring!

I REALLY LOVE THIS BIKE DONT DAMAGE IT!!!
