For 800 you'll get a scoot (PX, LML or Dan Motor Piaggio)in need of TLC.... I.e. you're going to have to spend about 1k getting it running and looking good...

Then factor in that the on the road price includes insurance and tax also... so dep on your age your on the road price might be 1200...

The Italian PX's obvioulsy have a bit more style than the indian LML's and the Indonesian Dan Motor's.... They should also have fewer mechanical woes and eventually (with a lick of paint) command higher resale...

So basically look for an Italian PX.... You'll be very lucky to find a Discbrake PX (FR plate onward) for $800... but it is possible... Ewty managed to get one for $600!!!

icic... but usually where can find these scoots? i know of TA, Hendra, Ah Joo... guess these are the big players rite?

Singapore is full of Vespas... they are everywhere..

Check the papers... uncles often sell via the paper... otherwise, the shops you mentioned a good place to start looking... Also try kallang area eg TaiHin...

Guys, Im interested in getting a '77 made Vespa.

However, Im not sure if the engine is gonna give me problems after purchase.

The worst is I have to pay loads of maintainence cost.

Can someone give me some advice?

Posted

Unless the seller knows the history of the scoot and when it last had an engine rebuild etc its a LOTTERY.... You may get lucky... you may get a lemon....

Is this your first Scoot?

Really, if it is... don't buy a '77... get a newer PX that you can learn the ropes on first... then when you know how to judge Sprints/Supers by yourself... buy one...

Check the wiki

Um... How can we say whether or not it will be safe????

Where are you buying it from??

What will the overhaul include???

Don't commit to a purchase before you find out what exactly this overhaul will include...

How much does the seller want for it?

What will be changed in the Engine overhaul?

What type of new paint? (a paint job can cost as little as $200)

A 92PX given a genuinely full rebuild (new seals, bearings, shiftcross etc) and new paint of $300 quality shouldn't cost more than 2k...

A full rebuild will usually cost less than $400 (including parts & labour)...

That means the base bike price without paint and rebuild is in the region of 1800... which is too much for an unrestored 92PX...

Can you back out of this deal? I would suggest you don't rush into getting a new paintjob and engine rebuild until you know the market and how much things cost (unless you don't mind paying extra for your ignorance...)

No offence here... but I wouldn't pay more than 1.6k for the bike you're willing to pay 2.4k for!

Take your time... there are plenty of scoots around, and plenty of better deals than that...

I just hand over a tin of laquer / clear coat to Tai Hin that cost $100+ per litre. For my scoot (0.5litre)

DIY - unless I'm a pro.
