Hi,

My rims were powdercoated black but I don't like the colour. Some parts are also starting to chip off.

I'd like to remove the powdercoat and just leave it in their original condition.

Can I use regular paintstripper? I searched google and they said this will work. Just apply, leave it on, and it will flake off.

Anyone have any experience trying that here?

Thanks!

it is very hard to remove powder coat..the easiest is by shot blasting..

chemical peel..a lot of work and smelly.toxic chemicals ...surface will look aweful..need repainting or other coating..

it is best just to paint over the rims of your choice..off course surface preparation is neccessary..

good luck.

Basically there r 2 types of powdercoating -

1. Indoor - cheap, w/o base coat. mostly for domestic rack

Can use paint remover + sanding to remove.

2. Outdoor - Expensive, w base coat...mostly use for industrial machinery & equipment.

Can use paint remover + sanding to remove......But very very very hard :faint:

Best method is sand or glass blasting.... or concentrated hcl acid!!!!!!

I'll suggest u to use paint putty, those use on car body, to cover the loose paint and sand it smooth....then repaint it...

Thanks guys for your suggestions.

Problem is, I want the original bare metal silver rims. Don't like black :)

I ride a dirt-bike, so they are probably made of aluminium or stainless steel. That is the stock condition.

I doubt the rims were given the tough powdercoat treatment. Otherwise parts of the paint wouldn't be chipped off.

I'll get a tin of pain stripper and try a tiny spot first. See what happens.
