I seem to read it somewhere that we can have IU removed but pay a certain sum per month to LTA...

Even if you could, I wouldn't recommend it.

Now roads are having more and more gantries appearing, you're going to ride through 1 sooner or later, and I'm sure its going to be 'fine'.

If the bike is registered wit a IU but u ride thru a gantry w/o it , LTA will jus send u a letter requsting u to go for a IU inspection.. No fine/ additional charges .. but if bike is not register wit a IU then its a different story

I strip off my IU in my old bike and of course, no going pass gantry. No fee needed to pay LTA for removing your IU.

I think u got ur facts wrong.. Riding thru gantry wit registered IU not connected will not be fined .. i went thru this proccess of going to IU inspection twice last yr and once this yr but none need to pay.. I think u missed the inspection period tat why u got the fine..

We must understand how the ERP, and IU works.

If your IU is connected properly, no cash card when passing the ERP Gantry, then its $10 admin fee + the prevailing ERP toll.

If somehow the connectivity of the IU to the bike power supply has become intermittent when passing through the ERP gantry, the system is still be able to detect the presence of an IU as it has internal batteries, but it won't be able to deduct the cashcard. Then you will be ask to go for inspection, no fine, no admin fee.

If somehow the connectivity of the IU to the bike power supply has become intermittent when passing through the ERP gantry, and the internal batteries have become too weak, the ERP Gantry would not be able to detect the presence of an IU, and it will be considered as "no IU". As this is same as not having a IU, then it will be a straight $70 fine.

That reminds me to it's time to charge up my IUs

i always wonder this part. if the gantry cant detect the presence of an IU or a bike has no IU, how the LTA the identity of the bike? please dont tell me LTA has a way to identify the bike. tell us how they do it. or there are camera on the gantries?

Every IU unit has a serial num(barcode at the side of the unit).

LTA keeps the record of each particular IU being registered to which particular vehicle.

That's how they track u down.
