Hi Bros / Sis

I just bought an 2nd hand XJR 1300.

As i have ride sport, street, sport touring bikes before, i have found this bike a bit different.

I don't know exactly whether the bike is originally like that or some problem with the tuning ( Currently RPM Idling in 1.1)

Different about it:

1) I can feel the engine vibration in my handles in stationery position.

2) I pump 18 liters of 95 petrol and i manage to get 148 KM only!!! ( FUEL CONSUMPTION HIGH ) ( First time top up petrol after buying it from shop )

Bike is mantain by one owner only millage 50,800 KM and 5 years old bike.

Do need some advice on this above mentioned problems.

Hi, hope to ease some of ur worries & concern.

1. No problem on the tuning. This is part of the XJR FI characteristics ever since XJR revamp fr a carb model to FI. The intital inconsistent rpm is probably due to an old engine design technology but has to match with some modern day electronic gadgetry. As it is air/oil cooled, it will behave diff fr liquid cooled engine but will never die on its owner. All XJR FI more or less hv this behaviour characteristics.

2. The XJR is renowned for its strong torque. U dun get harley kinda strong vibration but somewhat a softer version of that kinda vibration during stationery. Once on the move, most of the vibration disappea . Again this is a characteristic of its engine.

3. XJR mileage reading is in miles so what u r getting is miles rather than km. U hv to times 1.6 of what u see in order to get km. Yes the XJR is a thirsty bike during city riding but will achieve 18 to 20 km per liter during long distance cruising of speeds between 120 to 140km/h.

Hope these answer ur queries to let u appreciate this machine better.

Hi, indeed i m passionate abt this bike way before Yamaha intro FI on it, i luv the power of it. In Singapore, there isnt any 2013 model at all. Hong Leong brought in abt 20 odd units which were YOM 2008, I m not sure which yr did these batch of YOM 2008 touched our shores, but HL only managed to sell all of them finally in yr 2010 during Oct Nov period. The last facelift was the one u mentioned. Fr then, Yamaha revamp its design to a cafe racer style, no change to engine specs and its chasis frame, but shorten its rear, handle bars, meters and shrink its tank fr 21 liters to 14.5 liters. The XJR didnt really touched the hearts of many here, no one gave it a second glance when one just got his cl 2, finally HL decided not to bring in anymore. Demand was slow n low. When it wasnt available anymore, ppl start asking where they hv gone to? The pool of XJR owners probably disappear or not active at all as probably riders riding this bike r never attention seekers living a low profile life. The XJR is not a bike for newbies cos its riding dynamics are unforgiving, its heavy stature makes it stable but not nimble. It is powerful that towing another bike is so effortless. A sad occurence was a XJR rider perished in msia after having the bike for abt 6 mthd or so. All in all, it takes alot of understanding to appreciate the XJR.

Yes, I like that version! The 2015 are better but I am satisfied if I can get the 2013s. Looks like there's no hope in getting it now from your answer.

I have asked the right question to the right person... Thanks for the enlightenment and the brief history lesson of our home XJRs. Really hope to own one despite not being the one I love.

Looking at the XJR thread, looks like there's a handful of ppl in love with the 2015 XJR. I also got the chance of sitting on one in Zurich Yamaha showroom. The beast is beautiful and I'm sad that is is not coming here...

To confess, I used to think XJR are old and simple big boring bikes without character. I was wrong as I grew older....they are one of a kind! Rare, strong, reliable and mature.

Wanted to divert my attention and go to the hearts of the CB1100 or the CB1300 instead but I just unable to forget the XJR...

Thank you for the compliment, u have flattered me. I am no expert but coming fr being an owner myself. And as it has served me well, and being passionate about it prompts me to share more. Yes, u r right, sadly u cant get the 2013 model, in fact anything fr 2009 onwards. The No. 1 Valentino Rossi paintwork was a 2009 colour scheme. The blue with white stripe or black is fr 2008 color scheme. I forgot in which yr did Yamaha intro the engine powder coated scheme thou.

If I m not wrong, the 2015 cafe racer style did make it to our shores, dun quote me but I think it was brought in by mah pte ltd as a parallel import. Younger gen of retro riders love but the Euro XJR enthu hate it, in fact they did not like the FI model after comparing to their carb version.

I agree with their review that FI does not necessary give smooth power throttle delivery, at least fr factory specs but I m no someone who is gd in modding nor I like modding. All my past machines were stock.

It is the engine size that the XJR attracts many, huge engine presence thou delivering only 98bhp for the FI but bhp is not the figure we should be looking at fr the XJR, should be the torque fig instead. The XJR will be able to hit speeds like 90km/h or higher in gear 2 and insane speed fr gear 4 onwards, it reaches 100km/h in abt 4 secs giving it a gd straight line acceleration. Thou heavy (i wont say big cos many riders mistook me riding a 400cc SuperFour), it has a pretty tight turning radius.

Its air/oil cooled engine freak out many riders who are not familiar with it. Engine oil leak should not be developed into panic mode. Get the right opinion fr an expert and dun let shops fooled u into any overhaul easily. In my yrs of ownership, I hv learned and thanked ppl cos many times I freaked out every time I detected a leak but for the XJR, it was not a serious thing at all. It really takes a gd competent mechanic to troubleshoot, he doesnt hv to know the XJR inside out but must understand air/oil cooled engine.

I think I have digressed so bk to topic, u may wanna approach mah pte ltd to see if they can do something to to let u own the 2015 XJR machine, but fr what I know the price has changed alot. Personally, I do not like the cafe racer style cos I used it as a workhorse and touring so the 14.5l tank does no favour to my style of usage. Some inprovement cosmetic touches were nice thou like the meters, modern yet retro.

Cheers

My same sentiments too as I missed mine too. Sometimes economics dun work well with sentiments especially when its a workhorse. I'd say the XJR has the comfort of the FJR with its fairing taken away & lesser power output. When I do long distance touring, I never felt tired on it as well.

Was it a bad crash that it cant be repaired? Which yr model was urs may I ask?
