Need advice - Service, Powdercoat, Paint

Hi All,

 

I just got my WR200 and I'm still new to the whole bike ownership. The bike is in pretty good condition, engine wise but as I would like to personalise the bike, I'm thinking doing up the bike proper. I need your advice on what I should do first. These are the things I am thinking of doing:

 

1) Do a complete service of the bike

2) Powdercoat the frame

3) Respray the plastic parts (shrouds, fender, etc)

 

Based on the above, which job should I do first which makes the most sense? If I service now and then powdercoat, which requires striping the bike, would the bike be affected when its is reassembled? Should I service only after I powdercoat? And so on and so forth..

 

I also need more info on items 1 and 2. I have loked through the treads but could not come to any conclusion on these two items. Can anyone reply on the following:

1) Where to powdercoat? I need a shop that will do the whole job of stripping the bike, removing the paint on frame, powedercoating and then reassembling the bike.

2) For the respray of the plastic parts, is it advisable? I'm looking at doing one single solide colour. Read on forum that the paint will crack and all. If its done professionally, would it still crack? Don't they put a layer of clear laquer to protect the paint?

2)spray plastic is a big NO.....unless u nvr had the intention to hit off-rd....cos it will crack....nice but not for long..as long as u fall or bend the plastic....they will fall apart and will be much worst and ugly...also difficult to remove off

 

If powder coat...do it when u wanna overhaul ur engine cos once the engine are out, u can save on labour....

Use Vinyl Dye for plastics... Its a spray form like normal acrylic paint, but instead of a layer for paint, the stuff "absorbs" into the plastic, it just dye the first layer, meaning not all the way thru.. If u scratch the surface deep enuf u will still see the original color of the plastic...

 

Use to have black, i used it on my pc yrs back.. but due to lack of demand at that time the shop doesn't bring in anymore.. I tink there a few cans of red left...

 

But if ur original plastic is dark color eg black.. have to vinyl dye white first then watever color u want.. Don't bother order the stuff online... Aerosol cans have to get HAZMAT permit and can only be shipped by sea...
