i was jus joking abt wat X,Y,Z ring... haha.

there are those without o-rings and those with O-rings or X-rings. O or X-rings r rubber rings which r embedded into the chain to retain lubrication. of cos O or X-rings r more expensive.

oic... how to physically differentiate whether it is a normal chain w/o o or x rings from those with O and X rings?? I think I need to change my chain soon. which is better O or X rings??

if chain got O-ring, can see the rubber ring at the edge. O-ring and X-ring cannot tell diffesrence jus by looking... X-ring is jus an enhanced version of O-ring. if u ride a sports bike shd at least use O-ring, if ride cub, normal chain will do

if chain has O-rings or watever X,Y,Z rings... kerosene or petrol will deteriorate the rubber... it has been discussed b4 in other threads

kerosene is recommended...

kerosene is recommended...

to prove who is rite, who is wrong..

very simple..

use the o-ring from used chain, make sure the rubber still hav its properties intact.. no hardening, no deformation..

then u throw it into the kerosene for few days, then inspect again..

see got any changes to its properties..

to play safe, i use detergent n water to clean (i shd say wash) my o-ring chain.

talking abt removing chain... if chain is removed, i hav no worries abt getting strong detergent on my paintwork and other parts of my bike. n i can say... detergent can really do a gd job wif a toothbrush, esp those strong ones. n they r much cheaper than kerosene aniway

kerosene is probably ok for low-end heavy duty chains. If you are riding a modern performance bike, chances are that you have an O, or X-ring chain.

IMHO, its better to err on the side of caution & use a specialized chain cleaner instead. Something like this

(I believe vector 1 sells this)

tried removing d chain last wk end, but problem is after i haf d clip remove, d chain cannot be remove no matter i hard i force lei, how to go bout it?

find the link clip and use a flat-head screw driver to 'unclip' it, no special tool needed unless u need to shorten the chain.

u see this link on ur chain? the clip should b facing outside

can some tel me how to remove d chain after d clip is removed, do i need a chain breaker or something?

no u dont need a chain braker....ur already halfway there after u remove the clip...jus slide out the figure of 8 piece towards u....den the other bigger part u jus slide out away from u den tada....ur chain can be taken out already.....

also u use this same bigger part thingie wic i dunno e name to change to an another new chain...jus attach one end of a new chain to this bigger thingie wic is already attached to the oil chain...but den i wld suggest that u observe at e shop how many linkages they removed when they first installl the chain...so later when u buy an identical new chain n sprockets...u can tell them on the spot how many u wanted removed so saving u the trouble of buyin a chain breaker .....

hey..it is not a good idea to remove chains for cleaning..

..the chain plays a very very important function ..

under inexperience hands and without the proper training to remove it..

best is not to do it..

as any mistake may end up seriously injuring yourself or damage to the bike..

juat ask ...anyone do this removing chains for cleaning??? anyone?

this is not a bicycle ...even a cub..with about 10hp..can go up to 100km/hr..

and chains normally fails at higher speed..take care man..

so take care brother...

install an oiler..all your troubles are over as far as chain cleaning is concerned...

as i dont need to clean my chains any more..with this device.

talking about cheap cleaning method..

the cheapest one is..

use an oiler...no more chain cleaning required..as far as i am concerned..

for almost 2 years after my oiler was installed ..didnt do any cleaning..and they are still in pristine conditions..

if you have removed the clip and seperated the chain...this is the way i would do to remove chain..

#####put gears in neutral first#####

the bottom chain. u need to lay it out in a straight line on to the floor .

making sure that the direction is in line with the front sprocket...

then pull the top chains towards the rear wheel sprocket slowly...

making sure the chain direction as accurate as possible and in astraight line ..

if the top chain reaches the rear sprocket...place it over it and slowly pull it..by turning the rear wheel...

(too bad if u dont have a centre stand) until the chain comes out of the front sproket...

your chain got stuck??..have u put gears in neutral in the first place..

hey..i havent done this in my life...haha. do it at your own time..

actually the connecting link is the weak link in the whole chain. If you read from the chain installation guide on the box of the chain, it would recommend the rivet link instead of the clip link. I have seem somebody with the clip flying off at high speed.

that happens...with a bad chain too...

may be you cannot see the chain clip flying...but u can surely see the sorry state of the bike and the rider is in whe this happens..

if u install an oiler..

heavy duty chains...yeh HD chains will do..

with the oiler there is no need to pay xtra for the fanciful x, y, z...chains.

as the oiler will extend the life of the HD chains up to 5x...

some even claimed 10x...

chain tensioning...every 20000 km..is the norm..

and no more chain cleaning is neede...
