this might sound :offtopic: in sbf, but very curious abt all these cars hazard light. is it only for broken down vehicles? can they stop ANYWHERE they like? got so many encounter with cars/buses/lorries/taxis stop suddenly by turning on their hazard light after junction/before junction/at slip road/road into car parks/in front of schools. if we bump into a car that just stop by the road side with hazard light on but it is not a broken down vehicle, are we in the wrong?

Hazard lights is a visual warning to other road users to take note of that particular vehicle. It is used usually to indicate that the vehicle is slowing down to a stop, stationary or an indication of hazards in front of it.

For example:

1. A fellow rider has skidded, a car behind it may turn on its hazard lights to warn others behind.

2. The driver turns on the hazard lights to tell others that it is slowing down and going to stop anytime, maybe to drop or pick-up a passenger, or maybe there is some problem with the car, hence he need to stop.

3. A car has broken down and stopped by the side of the road, the driver will usually turn on its hazard lights to increase its visibility to other road users.

4. Another common intention by the drivers is when they want to park their cars. You will usually see that in carparks, where the drivers will turn on their hazard lights before they attempt to park their car. This is not in the highway code or traffic rules. It is just a common gesture to tell others that "I want to park my car, please don't come too near".

If you hit a stationary car with hazard lights on, but the car is not broken down, you are still in the wrong. The driver of the car will usually get away with illegal parking.

You should have seen the car and avoided it in the first place. Whatever the case, we are taught to identify hazards and avoid them during our riding lessons.

Ride safe. :cheeky:

good explanation. :thumb:

is there any limitation as to a non-broken down vehicle can use the hazard light? eg. quite a number of cars use hazard lights to stop at the road between the blocks leading to carpark. oso, saw a bus stopping in the slip road to pick up the passengers. especially at the road between the block. fed up wit lots of idiots, thot of snapping their plates and send to TP.

The easiest explanation is to refer to our highway code.

From my personal understanding, as long as the road signs or markings indicate no stopping at that area, motorists are not allowed to stop unless the vehicle is really broken down.

From your example, the buses and cars who stop in slip roads (usually marked with jagged lines) are commiting an illegal and irresponsible act. But a photo will not be able to prove anything. The best is a video clip which clearly shows the road markings, vehicle number and the whole process of commiting the illegal act.

Finally it is up the TP whether they want to take up the case.

I also really hate those who pick up passengers and let passengers alight at these areas.

One place I am always extra cautious is the roundabout exit to F,G,H carpark at Suntec. I often see cars parked there waiting to pickup their passengers.

After you turn out of the rounabout you have litttle time to react to the cars parked there.

Cheers. :cheeky:

There are times when driving along expressway on the right most lane, when some unexpected incident occured (eg. objects fallen onto road, accident...), when they need to do a emgerency brake , some drivers switch on the hazard light to give warning to the car following behind. There are some cars which will automatically switch on the hazard light when the driver does a e-brake.
