Different people have different techniques for braking. So how do you guys brake usually? Apply the 60 / 40 % rule applied in school?

One of my colleague self skidded on a phantom. Not sure whether his braking technique is wrong that caused him to skid or the tyres? Or his skill?

for me, i always use my rear brake. unless e-brake, i just pull both front and rear. when that time comes, i can't even think of the 60/40 ratio. u all can meh? at least in bbdc i can anticipate but on the road very suddenly one. if my bike starts to fishtail, i relax on both brakes la. if continue braking, sure skid one. but still scared seh when relaxing on the brakes. either skid or bang the car. luckily for me, managed to swerve away in time.

i dont think you can use 60-40% under all circumstances. what i do is sometimes to tap my front bike, sometimes i will just down gear and make use of engine brake. depending on how far away and how long i need to stop.

but won't engine brake be too hard?? cos i tried using engine brake once and i almost self skid. lucky i use my leg to keep the bike from falling. from then on, i NEVER use engine brake.

i personally feel the ergonomics of the phantom the rider position poses back strain injuries in long term.

pulsar also leh.. like must sit still upright not comfortable. then elbow also cannot rest on anything. btw, pulsar no racing footrest eh? i always rest my feet on the pillion footrest when on expressway. more comfortable that way. :thumb:

Wah bro, which gear your use to engine brake and at what speed? Think this plays a part too when come to use engine braking.

So do you guys use first gear for engine braking before you come to a complete stop?

Posted

i think that plays a part too. from gear 4 to gear 2 engine brake. like siao the bike wobble. i think around 60-70km/hr.

For stopping, I just let my bike go neutral then let it roll ever so relaxingly to the red light or wherever i wanna stop. then when near traffic light already, use rear brake. but when light turns green, kick back to 2nd or 3rd gear. i don't know why cars like to go so fast and then brake suddenly at the traffic light. so kiasu chope starting grids ah?

hello guys, sorry for MIA-ing after getting my bike. was going to update abt my bike when something unfortunate happened on the evening i collected the bike - my aunty was hospitalised, passed away few days ago.

Anyway, coming back to the update. I collected the bike last sat, 13th sept. Black pulsar, 180cc, FBC plate. I've changed tyres and sprocket with advise frm Nemesis. ts a really good bike, Im super glad i bought it, with no regrets. still running in :)

So far, I've learnt how to ride to a few locations, since i suck at directions and I have learnt how to pour petrol.. hah! It seems that if you let the petrol drip on the tank, and you dont get rid of it properly, the paint will peel off.. yikes.

Hope i didnt miss anything when i was MIA. thanks to all the guys here for all the help and information prior to purchasing my pulsar.

P.S.: a big helloo to all the new pulsar riders! do take note of the petrol on tank bit. very noob lah.. but it happens if your not careful..

Nice to hear from u. ride safe during this run-in period. btw ur bike is the last bike of FBC cat.

Feel free to drop us any sms or call us, of u encounted any problem. :thumb:

dear Pulsarian,

As mosoon season is coming, kindly ride safe on the road. Here is a stanza that i were being taught in the SAF saftey talk back in my army day. i still remember it. cause it is very useful regardless if we are rider or driver.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Imagine urself as the world number 1 safety rider, always treat other roaduser as a super IDOT.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Also... try to develop a riding 6th sense, with this ability, we can avoid most of the accident. Cause before anything happen, we can anticipate and mentally we are prepare.

This ability also allow u to do IA "imeditate Action" when somthing happen.

Example:

"Along the expressway, traveling at 90k/h at 2nd lane. Suddenly bike died off."

"Straight away, ur instinct kicked in, Clutch in (let it roll forward), on hazard light, move/roll ur bike toward the shoulder lane"

All this is depend on individual rider, What i advise is that, do not ride blindly.

Ride Safe and Enjoy.

hi there pulsar bros,

i just passed my 2B yesterday. first time taken and first time passed. and one of the main reasons is cos of the pulsar bikes i have seen under my blocks. so am definitely going to get one later or tomorrow.

as a newbie, i have got lots of questions abt this bike. and i have been redaing this forum for the past 2 months on wat u guys are up to. pretty cool!

1) is um the only place i can get the pulsar? well, i guess so.

2) i am thinking of getting the 180, but any significant points of the 200 that i should consider.?

3) many times i have seen bros mentioning abt changing the tyres ( to Battalax (or something) and changing the sprocket size. can someone advise me on this?

4) are the personnel/ mechanics at UM friendly enough when approached for advice and after-service care?

5) this is a dumb question, but, which helmet would look nice on a pulsar?

i know this is one question too many, but hope some bros can help me out on this or u can give me a ring too if thats more convenient.

thanks a million

Actually no, u can get at any other shop that sells bajaj...UM is the distro hence its 'easier' to get from them

2) i am thinking of getting the 180, but any significant points of the 200 that i should consider.?

-oil cooled, bigga tubeless MRF tires, split seat, bigga looking exhaust etc etc

3) many times i have seen bros mentioning abt changing the tyres ( to Battalax (or something) and changing the sprocket size. can someone advise me on this?

For tires its advicable for NEWBIES to change to Battalax BT39(IMHO cos tested in cameron)...Change tires due to lack of experience on the rd on slippery surfaces, braking, engine braking etc etc....unless youve taken defensive riding

For sprocket...use the bike first...feel it...after a few hundred miles then talk abt sprocket

4) are the personnel/ mechanics at UM friendly enough when approached for advice and after-service care? Yezzzzzzzzz

5) this is a dumb question, but, which helmet would look nice on a pulsar?

Dun wear 1!!!! ...FF helmet of course!!!!

i know this is one question too many, but hope some bros can help me out on this or u can give me a ring too if thats more convenient.

thanks a million

Congrats bro getting the 2B license.

1) UM is the sole distributor for Bajaj. Of course not the only shop in SG that sells pulsar. Anything wrong happens to your pulsar, This is the place to go to repair and service your bike. Authorised service centre valid warranty for new Pulsar 10,000km or 1 year.

2) You go to the shop, compare the outlook between the 180 and 200.

Best you ask the dealer/mechanics whats the difference. Or bros who rode the 180 and 200 can explain the difference handling.

3) Stock tyres pulsar MRF tyres. Made in India, suitable for India/Nepal mountaineous terrain. Singapore mostly tarmac roads. Majority pulsar riders switched to tubeless battlex tyres, made in Japan. Use lesser number of teeth on the rear sprocket due to the amount of vibration felt during high RPM at a lower speed. Currently UG 3.2 uses 39 teeth for rear sprocket while the 200 uses 38 teeth. Older UG versions default 43 teeth.

4)Yes they are friendly. I was offered a cold mineral water bottle once on a hot day. :thumb: Once in a while offer the mechanics some drinks la, im sure they will appreciate. :p

5) FFF = Flip up Full face helmet. Preferebly black. Favourite color amongst all.

engine brake not too safe on bikes right?

1. stressful for pistons and seals? (i guess)

2. imagine if accidentally kick one extra gear down and engine brake.. rider gonna fly due to temporary wheel lock

for me when approaching traffic lights on red, i will kick one down to fourth gear.. then apply both brakes gently till near stop then kick 2 down to 2nd gear, in case turn green i can accelerate off.

hi kano, as mine is pulsar 200, does that mean i don't have to change to battlex tyres as it has less teeth compared to UG? i'm unsure as i have yet to push my bike past 5000rpm.. still running the engine in very slowly :sian:

on a side note, today i was at a junction at clementi, on both sides of me are 2 red pulsars :) so cool 3 of us front line at traffic light :)

QUESTION: for pulsar180, its not split seat is it? so is it like most bikes? one piece seat to be lifted with a turn of a key? pulsar200 a bit troublesome, not much space underseat, and need to remove a tiny side plastic cover before u can access the 2 wire-release to take out the split seats. and no where to lock helmets!! rofl..

BUT i accept and LOVE my bike no matter!

thank you so much bros for all the advice.

very encouraging advice..

earlier i called this guy from UM. his name was michael. i wanted to ask him abt the cost of bike and insurance and things like that.

he quoted the 180 for $5150. insurance need to come down and calculate.

i am 30 yrs old (sigh). and just got licence yesterday.

so roughly how much will the insurance be?

and wat abt the monthly instalments?

and i remember reading somewhere on this site that the 180 was $3.5k plus. or was my eyes playing tricks on my eager and overexcited mind?

can any kind souls offer advice

yes pulsar 180 is about $3500++, but that is machine price. adding COE and miscellaneous costs will end up about $5k ++. do note that this is without insurance as it varies with age and riding experience. u can call some insurance companies to get a quote. some call centres operates 24hrs. i believe to date AXA is the cheapest for motorbike insurance, but NTUC income has wider coverage with a slightly more expensive price tag.

bro, just curious.

any recommendation for good FF helmets that is not overly harmful on the wallet?

i own a zeus full face flip up helmet, bought from ah boy at $120. actually the price was $130 and they said it was not bargainable. but i threatened for a refund (they make you pay first before showing u the helmet, its their practice) then they drop to $120. my brother who bought the helmet 5mins before me bought it at $130, a black full face flip up helmet. quality is pretty gd. but mine is the silver one, and silver one seems to be scratched much easier than the black. i dunno why.

Hi bro,

I believed warhorse changed his rear sprocket after changing his tyres to BT 39.. He's the best men to advice you on this.

Posted

mines p200. wonderful bike and the engine sound is music to my ears. only problem is it is more troublesome than other bikes when removing the seat. but not much point removing the seat as very little storage space underneath ^ ^ otherwise.. the perfect bike with room for modding to your likes, whether its bling or sprockets :D

however think im one of the unlucky few, got a few minor problems with my bike.

Posted

thats good to hear.. so how much u paying for the instalment every month..? and wat was the total price with coe and evrything OTR?

am quite interested to know.. newbie syndrome i guess hehe..

Posted

OTR was near $7k as im under 31 and new license holder. now will be slightly more expensive as COE went up again.

installment about $390+ for 1 yr
