Hi guys , i'm gonna be buying a gilera soon and i've had some questions on my mind , therefore decided to post my queries to the more experienced here , hope you guys can help me out.

 

I'm buying over my friend's gilera 180 sp , and earlier this march year due to some chain - effect damages , my friend spent quite an amount of money on repairs

Stuff done are as follows :

Changed carburettor

Changed yusa battery

Changed fuel ****

Changed tube head

Changed petrol pipe

Changed water pump

Changed malossi block (full set)

Changed thermostat

Changed thermal switch

Changed top set gasket

Changed head cover

 

Total repair sums up to an amount close to 1.1k , including labour

 

Just recently the bike has damages again , from what i occur a screw holding the engine dropped out , therefore when the bike is started there is very loud clanging of the engine and wheel due to the vibrations.

 

My question now is , is Gilera 180sp really a very problematic bike?

I'm looking for a basic , transport and reliable bike. I'm willing to fork out the money to make the current repairs , but i'm really worried that the bike will pull off some kind of stunt and i don't really have the financial ability to keep fixing it.

 

What else should i call the mechanic to check and look out for me? Is there any special issues on Gilera i should be aware about? What are the maintainence for this two stroke bike?

 

I'm planning to tow the bike to tai hin @ kallang and do up the bike there. Being my first scooter , is the shop's mechanic , service wise good?

The previous shop my friend went to was Sunrise eurobike.

 

Lastly , i'm planning to respray the bike (one colour tone only) , which shop should i bring to for a reasonable and good quality spray paint?

Hi there, my friend. The SP 180 is already a very old bike which actually can range from 5-10 years of mileage. I think there should not be any problem since your friend had installed the Malossi cylinder kit. In my own opinion, the SP180 is rather a fragile bike compared to the 4 strokes Runner, reason not that it breaks down all the time but needs to be taken care alot compared to the 4 strokes. I would say that the 2 stroke is worth your money in terms of performance but things can get pretty hairy if you compromise on maintenance. Overall it's how you take care of the bike like observing your mileage for the next servicing and other pre riding checks before anything starts to break loose.

 

In terms of bike breaking downs, 80% is always the owner not taking care and the other 20% is wear and tear IMO.
