My manual says that i must go for valve clearance at every 9k. Is it too frequent?

Every bike has different maintenance requirements.

Just because Japanese in-line fours require checking of valve clearances every 25,000km does not mean a Desmo Ducati can wait that long.

Follow your manual's recommendations to prevent potential grief.

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

I am one of them.

Saw it only when I went thru the owners manual. :|

The last time i do was 80 at a shop in eunos. Can pm me for the shop name ah. But like krafadaw said planet motors can do. Should be around that price also la. Can feel the difference after that definately. That few 0.01mm makes the difference.

Allow me to clarify on the valve clearance before we get paranoid over this matter.

The manual only stipulates the interval for checking the valve clearance. The key word is CHECKING. If the clearance is within the recommended tolerance, then no action is necessary. And factoring the fact that factory will always err on the high side, you could probably add 1.5 times to the recommended mileage interval.

On most bikes, more often than not, adjustment is not necessary unless it is ridden hard.

I have something to share too,

I would recommend getting the valve clearances checked at least once according to the manufacturer’s recommendation for new bike.

Usually, after the first adjustment, the clearances will stay unchanged for many kilometers.

I checked and adjusted my new W400 after 11,000km (manufacturer recommends every 12,000km). Only 1 out of 8 valves was within the specifications. Lets see what the clearances like when I check them again at 24,000km (currently odo reading is only 16,000km, got to find more time to ride)

W400 > Looks like all your valves are on the loose side. But for air cooled machines, alittle loose is better than tight.

Exactly :thumb: the cylinder head temperature of an air-cooled engine fluctuate greatly as compared to water cooled engine, like you said, a little loose is better than tight. I am quite satisfied with the clearances after the adjustment which fall into the loose side of the recommended range.
