I rode with some Hornets and SV650 and 400s to the famed Gerik.

The trip was organised by Hornets' Nest and totaled almost 2000km.

Gerik is supposed to be a riding paradise.

Here are a small sample of the pictures we have taken:

If You Haven't Ride at Grik, Then You Haven't Ride in Malaysia!

Congrats at the successful ride. The actual thrills comes right after Grik town in Perak on the way to Jeli, Kelantan using Route 4 or the East West Highway. It is commonly referred to as the Grik Highway by bikers from Spore and KL as this is the first town you will passed.

I first rode on this route back in 1989 when the communist were still active in the area. Therefore, the road opens only during daylight and there were many military posts. However, you would probably avoid going there in the night as wild animals like elephants and tigers would probably be resting on the warm tarmac between 7-9pm.

I have since made riding this Route an annual event. Actually, I was there on 13 June on my way to KL from Trenngganu.

Biketec 21 has asked me to organise a ride at this place and we'll be going there from 9-12 Aug. For more details, pls come to BikeTec as the fliers is pasted on a wall outside the shop.

Phang: Haha. U asked a very very good question.

At the towns like Jeli and Gerik, u will have mobile coverage.

But in between, there will be areas where u mobile phone can't work (unless u got a satelite phone).

So if something happens to u and suay suay u are in these areas, then u r in trouble. Like us....Day 2 (Part II).:cheeky:

I am planning for a solo ride following the same route, mobile phone coverage is vital to me. Still trying hard to get the clearance from my wife.

I just read the 2nd part of Day Two.

I think the first mistake is to leave Ipoh late. On my rides, I will leave early at 8am. This is to allow more 'day' time for emergencies, like the one u encounter.

I have been lucky not to encounter any difficulties during my ride up in the mountains at Route 4.

The second is that none of you are familiar with Trengganu. After Jeli, you will hit Jertih, which is the first town in Trengganu. 15km from Jertih is Kuala Besut, a small town where there is many seaside chalet and resort. Kuala Besut is also the town where the jetty to Pulau Perhentian is located.

In recent years, I have chose to stay at Kuala Besut (KB) on my ride up to Grik. By staying at KB, this will make my night stop near to the entrance of the EastWest Highway (Route 4) for the next day ride.

Anyway, I enjoy reading your blog.

Hi KISS,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I think it is great that u share ideas for improvement so that other "silkroute" riders will not make the same mistakes or will have an even more enjoyable journey.

Our style is sometimes we tour like "bumbling fools". We just decide on a location, plan the route based on "map exercise" and bumble our way there.:cheeky:

Of course, if there is people who had been there before and we could get hold of their experience, we would have been better off and wouldn't need to bumble along our ways.

That's why I blog my rides so that more people can be aware of the pleasures of motorcycle touring and where to go/how to get there.

I give up bike riding (been riding for 10 years) ever since I bought a car last year but I still enjoy coming back here for information esp travelling trips to M'sia. It is very informative.

Keep up the good works!
