Anyone using those engine oil breather tubes that extends all the way to the back of the bike and the end part fixed with an air filter?Does it serve any purpose or purely cosmetic?Just curious cos followed a frend to Regina and saw the item.

Yep! happens to 3 other RVFs i test rode before. Its your chain hitting your underside swingarm.

Pretty normal but it should not bt too loud...a slight 'tok' is ok when u close thrott. and it should not "tok" multiple times as u are coasting to a stop or cruising as that is indication of a loose chain oredy.

RVF's direct sprock (no cush drive) design kills chains faster than other bikes but a well tensioned chain (not too tight, not too loose) will minimise these driveline noises.

Talking about noise, I would like to ask whether while in idling position. Other than the sound of the exhaust, I notice a soft knocking sound on the left of the bike near the left signal light in front. is that the knocking sound of the piston or movement of the con-rod. Is that normal guys?

hehehe.... this discussion was also surfaced years ago in the 1st RVF thread.

Cant tell you offhand if it is normal. Need to hear physically then can tell.

Naturally, V4s tend to be a little rattly. Soft rattle almost bordering on the soft murmur of a minature toy choo-choo train if u know what i mean.

Loud rattles that go TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK (u know those toy machine gun u use to play when we were kids?) ....and i do mean very loud...those are definitely not good and most ppl will tell u that yr engine requires a valves clearance...which generally involves taking off the engine cams cover to do the job. And its quite a big job....so better get a competent mech to do it.

Haynes recommends service every 24000 (or 2 years) but i seen most rvfs still sounding very good without any valves clearances done. 1 guy i know done it before at around 50K km but he only reported ONE shim out of limits by a little bit.

U have nothing much to worry though...V4s engines are quite hardy and i never seen one seizing or engine PIANG like Takumi's AE86.......yet.

i had installed 1 on my bike and my galfriend bike.

depends on how motorshop installs it. normally they take out the stock pipe from the air box and put the breather tube.

what i did was take out the original engine oil cap, get an adapter and mounted it there. like this, its a secondary vent.

it keeps the engine alot cooler at idling

Dun be mistaken. The primary purpose of this breather tube mod is definitely NOT to keep the engine running cooler and same goes for the resultant reduced crankcase pressure ( crankcase pressure never a good thing ). These are only the 'by-product' of the actual purpose;

that is, to eliminate a potentially (i wouldnt worry abt it though) detrimental outcome should the 'atmospheric pressure-based' OEM venting system fails...either from worn piston rings, overfilled engine oil, blocked vent tubes.....or very very old engines.....

Its just a very soft rattling sound that you have to hear very hard to notice. I am very particular of my bike condition la, maybe just worry too much.

Talking about valva clearance, I have been to tons of mechs and most of them tell me there is no need to do so. As for the engine of a four stroke, my mech told me there is no need to worry even if the bike have over clocked before a 4 strokes bikes are very hardy, rarely there is a need for over haul, is that true?

Guys why not we meet up soon? RVFians seldom meet up ya, unlike the Aprillians which i used to be. Seriously, I do think that RVF's handling is a little better than a Aprillia. But I do miss the hi REVs of an Aprillia. :thumb:

this is chim. thanks for the info man.

but i had huge heating up problems when i first bought my bike.

the breather solved the problem. how it solved i dunno

Ok 1stly.....

A separate positive pressure venting tube helps channel "trapped' unwanted pressure from the crankcase out more effectively than the OEM setup which uses the same orifice within the airbox to create vacuum.

With less crank pressure down below the piston rings onwards down to the crank...the engine will not need to "push" harder to overcome the forces of the residual pressure within the crankcase. Thus your engine runs cooler.

Now.....

Assuming u guys read the article i posted, problem with OEM vent system is that blowbys exit via the same pathway the venting air is coming into the cam covers from. slight residual blowbys is perfectly fine in used engine...however problem comes when you Overfill the engine oil (resultant more crankpressure, more blowbys) and that is why more heat problems, or your vent lines are clogged, resulting crank pressure cannot escape=increase heat problem + slow lethargic engine response (more backpressure to push down by piston).... so there you see....if your bike is in a healthy condition , this mod is not very necessary in the 1st place.

But if u ask me if this is a good thing to install on a healthy bike?

it'll definitely make your engine feel more responsive (how much more? i have no clue...havent done it myself) as air is being expelled out from the crankcase at a faster rate.

OEM vent sys actually help u monitor for excessive leakage of oil onto the air filter. This could be signs of very worn piston rings....bear in mind at this stage..it is bad...as the residual oil in the air element gets SUCK back into the engine. remember blow-bys are crankcase sludge...decomposed oil now being fed back into the upper engine internals. Overtime this will kill the engine.

So do check periodically your air element especially during services. residual oil is fine as it helps lubricate the filter element..great if u have foam filters! but a big pool of oil is a no-no.

The crankcase mod greatest advantage is it completely remove the root-cause of engine failure mentioned above.

However u have to consider an ideal area in the bike to run the new tube and place that minature air filter cone;

--away from water (backflow of water into the cone and then to the crank is catastrophic!)

--away from your tires! Oil WILL leak from the cone, drip by drip if ever so slightly....and any oil over the tire is....u get the pic...

--away from in-rush of air (dun place cone facing front of bike with alot of turbulence)

and so you see....Since you said prior to this u had some heat issues...u better get it check out soon...this helpful mode merely compensates for the problem not solve it.
