GSX400 Impulse became soon somewhat of a cult bike in Japan, a fact that held the used bike prices high. The GSX400 Impulse owner haven't had the same problems as many GSX400 owner's in the early eighties with overheated engines, burned up alternators and corroding exhaust etc. The Impulse is as reliable as any other modern Japanese motorcycle with good performance.

There's nothing wrong with the bike, the engine runs smooth and quiet, the top end is particularly rattle free. The brakes (290 mm double disks at the front and a 250 mm single disk at the rear) are excellent and the engine is powerful but the engine never manages to find a sweet spot with enough of torque.

Sum summarum, the bike could be described as adequate. The suspension and comfort are adequate, the geometry's relatively fast turning and the stability at higher speeds is not as good as old bruisers like GS550. If the Impulse never inspires neither does it frighten.

Engine Type: Liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four 4-stroke

Cylinder Volume: 399 cc

Overall Width: 740 mm (29.1 in.)

Overall Height: 1 110 mm (43.7 in.)

Transmission: 6-speed Constant Mesh

1st Gear Ratio: 3.363

2nd Gear Ratio: 2.307

3rd Gear Ratio: 1.750

4th Gear Ratio: 1.437

5th Gear Ratio: 1.250

6th Gear Ratio: 1.136

Primary Drive Ratio: 1.750

Final Drive Ratio: 3.428

Starting System: Electric Starter

Ignition System: Full Transistor

Oil Capacity: 3.2 liter

Caster: 25° 40'

Trail: 98 mm (3.86 in.)

Front Tire: 110/70-17 54H

Rear Tire: 140/70-17 66H

Front Brake: Double Hydraulic Disk

Rear Brake: Single Hydraulic Disk

Fuel Consumption: 36,5 km/liter (60 km/h)

Carburetor Type: BST29

Turning Radius: 2,7 meter

Is it possible to fit wider rear tire 160 for the impulse400? currently I am on 140.

How many litres of engine oil are needed for impulse?

I think I filled in too much at 3.2L... that's why the EO leakage.

I fill less than 3L (approx 2.7L), put the bike on main stand (wait approx 1minute) and and check the side view window on the side of the engine, oil level should be between L and F.

usually when I change my oil filter, more EO can fit in. Approx about 3Ltr in total.

You've bought and used this "Derestricted CDI Ignition SUZUKI INAZUMA GK79A Ignitor" ? Better performance? Thought you're selling your Impulse?

My rear brake pad and disc have just been replaced not long ago. Now the rear brake is buzzing quite loud when stepping it gently during slowing down. It also buzzes loud when I push the bike backward. Do I have to replace the brake pump too?

Could be your brake pads, cheapo one will generate alot of brake dust and cause the noise. Try using compressed air to spray at the brake area and try again. How about your brake disc condition, are they new or 2nd hand?

If problem persist after checking the above, suggest to overhaul your brake caliper, replace piston and seal if they are not smooth. The brake pump hardly gives problem.

I had the same problem once. AFter I did the full servicing of the brake pump (seals and oil), it was a lot better. I realise this happened cos I took too long to change the brake pads (waited for it to be really thin). Hence, one of the seals broke when the new brake pads were put in.

I'm keeping a Impulse as a hobby bike - simply dig the retro look. It's already in quite good condition when i take over it and i hope to maintain the bike as best as i could.

I read thru this threads and man..u such a hands on guy, thumbs up to u.

Though i'm also a hands on guy but doubt my skill is up to your mark.

Thanks and welcome to the Impulse thread, there are less than 10 owners here, I am also keeping the bike, may renew the COE in 2013 if its cheap else will scrap it since there is no resale value. Mainly use for transport, its fuel efficient and reliable bike (if properly maintain).

The GSX1400 paint scheme turns out well on our impulse, was quoted $320 to paint this design, $280 if dismantle the parts yourself (still considering)

Our impulse not so retro(uncle look) anymore with the correct paint scheme and exhaust.:cheer:

Yesterday rode my Impulse all the way up to Rawang, Selangor to visit friend and back to Sg on midnight. Spent 10 hours on 800 km. Was worried if the little engine leak could expose bigger problem on the long journey. Glad that it ran smoothly and overtook cars on NSHW at breeze. Going to do valve cleansing and balancing for it. As for the leak, maybe try to change engine gasket and see how.
