IT is a very vast subject....Maybe you can narrow down your options by what you wanna do and achieve after you complete the course.

You may wanna consider the course content as well. I am a supporter of knowledge and not getting fast degree/diploma. If you are chasing paper, maybe informatics or other private schools maybe suitable for you.

Take time in accessing the course content with your IT friends and if possible with the school's course advisors on the subjects taught and the course duration. Don't rush into something that you might regret in the future and not to mention money wasted.

BTW I am a grad from Temasek Poly and Singapore Institute of Management.

As a guide, think the opposite way: What kind of jobs do you think you'd like to be in? If you've been doing programming as a hobby or have done it and liked it, go browse the numerous online recruitment websites and see what jobs sound close to what you would like to be doing in the future. Also read their requirements (eg) we require people with VB.NET or C# skill, etc....information like these can help you decide what courses you can take so that you can find jobs like these and be readily accepted by the hirers because by then you've already possess the skill and qualification.

This is to prep you to take the correct course so that, as IvikaRazi said, "don't rush into something that you might regret in the future and not to mention money wasted."

By the way, i'm not too sure about how hirers quantify someone as "qualified" in the Software engineering/architect line, but for us in the IT line where we are more on infrastructure (eg, takes care of computers instead of do programming), we are required to take and pass certification exams and to have certificate to prove our knowledge to our hirers during a job hunt.

P.S.: The last time I was comparing the various IT schools to certify myself, Informatics has promised me an itinerary with a good amount of practical lessons with lots of course materials. But that was for a non-programming kind of course. A bit pricier though.

Not too sure about the rest of the places though.

IT is not about programming. if you think it is, you'll be disappointed. IT talks about the higher levels of abstraction to develop a system. that includes alot of knowledge from business process to logistics which are not programming. if u want something with lots of programming find something that is computer science.

Walk a thousand miles.

The technology moves so fast that whatever taught in school will be obsoleted before you graduate.

Since you mentioned your interest is in programming, then zoom in on programming courses instead of pursuing a Dip into IT which is so general.

Well, everybody like kwanheng has to start from rookie positions. I'd prefer to cut him some slack a bit, let him pursue education that he desires, and then job(s) that he wants.

Eventually when he gets comfortable with his position, sticks with, and grows with the company, then the higher-level "business processes", the "logistics", and the company structure and its best practices should come into play. Then perhaps by then, he can begin to walk on his own, making decisions, following company procedures, etc...

And maybe a promotion or two too.

Orientation starts from ground up. :)

That's true.

I never liked anything general, perhaps that's just my preference.

Those are for people seeking top- and/or management posts. The People-management, Resource-management, and ITIL leaders...as I would like to call it.

Kudos to them, by the way :)

Programming, network, and engineer positions are what I call Specialist positions. It may be mid-level and you have to report to a higher-level authority like the abovementioned management leaders, but sometimes, getting your skillful hands dirty on equipment, systems, or coding sometimes can be fun, instead of simply managing them.

To each his preference and aspirations.

Yours truly, assisting people as a proverbial I.T. specialist :)
