Thx for the reply.

Yes, my mileage is nearing 100k. And I'm a bit of a whacker. :p

One thing I need to change soon are my disc brake plate.

I did fix my clutch slip problem at about 70k.

I'm fine with noise from the engine. Cept the bike seems to rattle more on the fairing at the front, more than usual.

Will do some more research on it before I make my decision.

Will update the SW bros here if I go ahead with the overhaul....

So I will be the guinea pig....;)

I really love the bike a lot to change to another brand and also find the price on the new one too pricey for only the external changes.

Bikes ridden:

89-YamahaLC125, 91-SuzukiRG125, 92-HondaCBR400J , 94-YamahaVirago400, 94-SuzukiGSXR400R, 94-YamahaTZR125, 94-HondaCBR400NFireblade, 96-HondaSteed400,

If it's only tapping sound from the engine top, then no need to overhaul.

However, bikes after many many years would require 'tap pad' or 'valve clearance' adjustment.

No need overhaul if bike still functions well, e.g. no white smoke from exhaust, no excessive power lost, no plug problem, no cling cling noise from engine, etc.

Noise from front fairing is common. Just need time to isolate it.

Sometimes more rattles may mean the bike could be under power, i.e. transmission not smooth or lack of power due to plugs, oil, tires or even when wheels are not spinning smoothly, throttle cable friction, etc.

no no... i'm only a construction worker who is just try to help pass down the info that were passed down to me... i'm merely a "pipe"

the tech guru of the group is SW9000 :thumb:

do check out the tech thread for more about SW

Silverwing 400cc / 600cc Tech Corner

see post #124 for general info about different variants of SW

1.63cm  can i bet $1 that u mean 1.63m... 1cm taller than me :cheeky:

if you ask me, i'ld recommend SW 400cc FJS Euro model (JDM has higher FC) compared to the rest in your choice, especially if you intend to go touring. imo, improvements in performance from 600cc is marginal and thus not worth the additional costs (e.g. road tax, insurance, higher FC, etc). prices of used 400cc and 600cc are not far apart.

if you have noticed, the SW is a tour proven bike and our kakis have taken it as far as northern thailand. comfort and reliability is not really an issue but it has one same problem as many other maxi-scoots, may need to ship back for "major" breakdowns cos no parts available in Msia or Thailand, unless you express courier the items to hotel/workshop or modify "usable parts" for temp use. that's provided someone knows how to work on it. but for city riding, the 400cc burger could be more zippy due to its shorter and lighter body. i may be wrong but seems i have relatively less confidence in suzuki's support for used bikes. tmax is definitely the one to choose if you need a powerful "chiongster". good pickup but less comfortable seating posture and storage capacity is insufficient for my liking.

on Tmax, SW9000 is best person to review; he switched from SW to Tmax and back to SW in few weeks :p

the SW is generally not a problematic bike even when few years old (provide well taken cared) due to its simplicity and honda's quality, only that some parts are quite pricey. e.g. changing the whole set of tupperwares from head-to-tail could easily cost >$2K (notwithstanding the waiting time for import). it is thus important to make sure body is in good condition when choosing a used unit, apart from checking that the engine/transmission is ok.

guess i better stop here cos starting to sound like a honda salesman liow... hope my opinion helps

like SW9000 said, the rattling at the front can be fixed... i had some rattling at the front (somewhere behind the black dashboard) of my 2006 FJS SW. mech spent a whole day taking the "head section" apart, putting insulation to the joining parts to reduce vibration, tightening every screws/bolt/nuts, cable tie the loose ends to strong points, etc.

there's some info at the SW tech thread post #138 about engine overhaul

Nobody here is riding the new SW600-GT so there's no review. *Previous version of SW600 drinks petrol with only slight performance improvement (top speed add 10km/h).

The Tmax and SW400 are in the same category of pricing (18k-20k).

The new Burgman 2011 should be much cheaper but understand that after sales/market support is not that good and common problem could be 'EO disappearance'. However, the new look is comparable to the other 2.

I don't have review for Burgman.

SW400 is heavy. It is built for cruising and light touring with big storage. It is very quiet. FC= 24-25km/L.

Downside is the slow cornering and the need to upgrade the suspensions.

Tmax is light. It is built for fun and exciting fast rides, even into corners. Suspension is very good. Many aftermarket accessories to add. FC= 21-22km/L.

Slight noisier with less storage. Don't look good with a box. Seat height seems to be slightly higher than SW.

For your kind inputs. Thank you!

just received email from Hagon USA...

I spoke to Hagon Products in England. We cannot make a shorter shock for your Honda Silver Wing, but, depending on your weight, we may be able to lower your bike by using a lighter spring. If you let me know how much you weigh, we can start from there.

hmmm... i'm not keen to use a softer spring, prefer "hard rods" :cheeky:

now asking for cost to customise a pair :p

Extended length = 370mm

Compresses length = 270mm

Max. spring length = 265mm

Damping rate = Medium damping #5

Spring rate = 20kg/cm

Grrr... somebody did North Thailand with his SYM... while I need till end next year to build up my confidence...

I am repeating the Northern Thailand ride this year from Dec 18th to Dec. 31st ....after completing a similar ride (solo) on my SYM 250i scooter in December 2010 for 10 days.

Yeah...the climate began to turn cooler even in mid-December, even had three thick blankets over me on a very chilli night in Mae Sai.

At the end of this year I am riding up again on a different bike..a Versys KLE650 and will venture into places and routes that I missed last year due to the shortage of time.

If you ever happened to have an amended schedule and ride much earlier than you originally planned....we can synchronize the ride somehow...

You'd love the twisties and the bends leading up to Mae Hong Son and Pai on your Fazer....believe me...

Cheers...

Will see what the workshop can do to minimize the noise after the next servicing which is due soon anyway.

I think the bike function well overall. Maybe this round I will change back to the better spark plug.

Currently using the normal ones. Still using Motul 300V since I've got it few years ago.

Update you guys again! ;)

Thanks for the input SW9000.

sparkies i'ld recommend Denso IUH24 (more responsive) or IUH24D (smoother)... about 12~14 bucks ea at LAB. workshops usually charge about 20+ ea with installation.

if you want quieter engine, how about try maxima extra 10w40? think the motul 300v is thinner and some SW riders feedback that it breakdown earlier, gets rough after about 3~4k km. i've tried 7100 but didn't like it, 300v is imo overpriced.

Which workshop are you using? Can PM me?

no need PM, everyone here knows i dun stick to a particular workshop, i use 3 shops :p

* Future Scootering (Kallang): boss is Kenny, i only let Ah Hwa (usually) or Kenny do my bike. most convenient for me due to proximity to my office.

* K&T (ubi): boss is Clifford but SW usually done by Ah Chuen. liked their workmanship but need to pay a few bucks more. usually very busy, so i make appointments before heading down.

* A.C. Motor (serangoon north): boss is Ah Choong, i prefer not to let his helper do my bike. if Ah Choong not free, i leave. used to frequent him while he was at kallang, the new location not convenient for me.
