... Am checking out the prices for a new bike.

... May I know what are the differences in getting the bike from boon siew to bike shops?

... I am not really keen on the helmets & rain coat that the shops throw in, but will like to have a box, which BS doesn't give free. Where do you guys get ur bike from?

firstly, suggest you shop around for a "best deal" before settling for one; best deal considers not only price and freebies, but also what happens after signing on the dotted line. e.g. one of the more popular shops is known for good pricing (no freebies) but it is also known for its "less than ideal" service attitudes.

do remember to ask for ALL COSTS inclusive deals, as On-the-Road prices vary from shops to shops. e.g. some shops do not consider IU as part of the OTR.

tech corner post #32 "sums of buying a new bike" may be useful read.

in case you prefer a "full cash" purchase, make sure you tell shop clearly your intention when computing final price; shops usually mark up another $400~$600 to the price (to cover their interest "loss").

key difference between buying from boon siew and bike shops is PRICE (from past feedbacks). authorised dealers (tech corner post #7) get their bikes from boon siew, then sell to us with their own markups. their prices are usually more flexible (some claim that price is controlled by BS) and are more willing to sweeten the deal with freebies such as rain gears, helmet, top-box, spare key, etc. some even give free checks and mineral oil/filter change during run-in. what freebies are given sometimes depends on your bargaining power and relationship with shop.

yes, a box is a very useful thing to have, even on the SW. shops usually give the cheap E450 simply (their cost could be just a couple of tens) but do think about what size you want/need. if need a bigger one, bargain with them for some top up arrangement (don't think shops will give maxia or S48 free) :p

common shops SWingers buy from (not in any order):

* AS Phoon

* Bike Production

* Looi's Motor

* M1 Motoring

* Mah Motor

remember to confirm with them that bike is "agent" bike and not a parallel import.

:goodluck: ... and do join us for meet-ups and touring

do you think if you buy full cash from BS, the price will be better than anywhere else, since it's no difference from them selling to bike shops?

Posted (edited)

ahh... uncle got a very very good point :clap:

BS's price remains the same with or without loan, and comes with comprehensive insurance.

from a recent quote, OTR SWT400 prices (incl. GST) for rider aged >40 are ~$18.4k for standard model and ~$19.6k with ABS.

like uncle suggested, we should get a quote from BS based on the buyer's profile, then compare apple to apple if buying "cash-n-take". prices for different aged riders are different due to different insurance costs.

shops buy from BS at special dealer prices, prices we don't and won't get to know. it all depends on how much the dealers want for their margin (thus profit). some markup higher some lower, but many (of not most) ask for higher prices for "cash-n-take" deals; at least Looi's and Bike production does that.

so if prices work out to the same or similar, then other considerations comes into play, like dealers' "sweeteners", after-sales, "friendship" and not forgetting availability of "trade-in" arrangements. BS don't take trade-ins :p

Thanks for all the great advices, I went to the bikeshop and ask how much can I trade in my spec 2, and was quoted the most 3.5k. Where as on the used bike forum here, people are selling 5k and above. I would rather sell my bike than push it to the bikeshop! I saw from Honda.jp, the sw 400 comes with 2 yrs warranty, but here is only 1yr.

I just installed Hyperpro front fork over the weekend (next target is Hagon rear shocks :)) and new Feelfree tires. Noticed a slight wobbling that wasn't there before at lower speeds. The wobbling effect seems to go away at above 60-70km.

Anyone had the same experience before? What could be the issue...the new front fork, tires or both? Or could I be over sensitive?

It seem like air filter very hard to change...

The coolant, I tried taking out the right glove box, it wont dislodge...Will try again....

Now I remember, just squeeze the long sides of the box together and lift it up.

Air filter very easy. Easier than coolant. Jus need to slide it out rather than pulling out...

After I sell my tmax I also want to buy the hagon rear shock.....I find that when cornering at higher speed, the bike seem to be nervous during the execution...Compare to bikes with mono shock..The rear shock other than pre load can we adjust damping like compression or rebound??

The rear setting at 4 (for 1 rider) and 5 (with pillion) is stable enough for most corners.

No damping adjustment.

The problem is the front.

Older model silverwing? It is sensitive to unbalanced/worn tires.

Slight wobble at 60km (during deceleration).

Everytime change tires, must ask shop to check balancing twice to confirm.

The previous owner had fitted hydropro fork spring...So the front is fixed on my bike..

Yup its a 2001 SW. How did you know? :) I better bring back to the shop to ask them check the balancing again.

Thanks for the advice!

Rear setting should not go lower than 4. If shocks is old and setting 5 does not help then the Hagon would be a good replacement.

It will lift the rear slightly higher for better cornering.
