Some say Run-In.. Some sat Breaking-In...

There are good reasons for breaking in a vehicle, the process allows various car parts such as the engine, transmissions and drive axles to wear into each other and for engine bearings and cylinders to wear out evenly. The piston rings also need to settle or fully seat.

Because everything is new; the engine, the transmission, the brakes, they have to be gently eased into their work. Only when the gears start interacting can they find their “groove” – in other words, work themselves in. Not following the proper break-in or running in procedures could result in premature failure of the engine or other parts...

The only problem is not everyone can agree on one type of breaking in procedure.. Some follow owners manual method, some uses the "hard break in" way.. All I can say is that it's your car/bike,do what ever you think it's right..

Just follow the manufacturers recommendations.

Most vehicle manufacturers build their own chassis and engines. Some even gearboxes. That's why the manufacturers of engines are able to recommend a run in method that benefits their engine on the long run. This does not include only vehicle engines. This include also generators for shipyards, buses basically any power generation equipment. If the manufacturer states run in, then do it. If they don't then no need. Because they have already taken into account the seating tolerance of their parts, the engine oil quantity and circulation pressure, the power of the engine, the load it is subjected to... etc etc.

A simple analogy:

Will you trust the doctor who prescibes the medication to you or trust a myth that uses the same medication prescribed in a different way?

We are not the doctors who made the product, so base on what are we going to recommend the run in procedure? Hard run in or soft run in? There's no such terms used in the auto industry. There's only 1 way of running in and that's the manufacturer's method.

Of course, the machine is to be run in discretionary. No matter what, it is paid by the owner and he can blow up the engines even if he likes. We gotta respect that.

don't be misled by hard break procedures you read online. It is meant for new bikes fresh out from the factory, and there are proper procedures for hard breaking-in. A more controlled method of hard breaking in is on the dyno.

If your bike has done an overhaul at your favorite and most reliable mechanic, please don't attempt the hard breaking in because it will never be built to the same specifications as from the factory.

Your DIY hard break could turn out to become heart break

Anyway, there is no need for running in for new BMW.

Most important thing is NOT to let your engine idle for long, that will cause excessive wear due to the swelling of piston. You can drive your car off slowly about 10secs after starting the engine. For Avante, owners manual state that for the first 2000km you got to keep revs between 2-4k RPM(so it's not exactly "soft" run in too).. Don't stay on a certain rev for too long, rev if every now and then or downshift for a little while if you are cruising.. change you engine oil as soon as you can,dun wait till 1k den change. If you know that you need to change oil because there are "dirty" particles in the engine why let it run in you engine for 1k? My 2 cents
