2-stroke = 2t oil aka gear oil

:sorry: Bro, correction to this. . . i'm no expert but this is wat i know. . .

2T is for 2-stroke bikes. . . it gets mixed with the fuel and is burnt up in the combustion chamber to lub the crank & cylinder wall. 2-stroke engines also uses gear oil as the gearbox at the bottom is a seperate oil system. The gear oil in there purely lubs the gearings and stuff in the gearbox.

4T also must change regularly.

Hey~ can I ask you something?

I am currently using the Ultra 5W50.... its good and I intend to keep using it. However, I will need to change my oil filter during my next oil change and this mean I need to buy more than 3 bottles of 5W50... My question is, can I use my previous Extra 10W40 to top up? i.e. 3L of 5W50 and about 200ml of 10W40 to make up the 3.2L?

Will it have any adverse effect on the engine or is it do-able in the first place?

It's fine, the oil is compatible, but will end up alittle thinner at operating termp. You're just making the performance characteristics shift towards the Extra. If you're spending the bucks on 3L of Ultra, end up kind of degrading the performance. I know AHM Performance in Eunos does oil top up and charge only what you use, you might want to check them out and save yourself the cost of buying an entire bottle.

That SAE40 is thick as h3ll until the oil warms up. I think u have problems getting it to idle right when starting from cold. It was thick even for a class 2 bike, took forever before the oil reached the right temp and viscosity to idle properly.

My bike(Hornet250) have this kind of idling prob when start from cold too. It will idle for about 10-15s & then die off. If i increase the idle rpm slightly higher, then when engine is warm, eigine idle will go slightly higher again. is this engine oil used related? ANR, which maxima will you recommend? Currently using motorex 10w-50..

Thanx for the reply

haha... cuz I already have a bottle of Extra 10W40 with about 500ml left mah... so thinking of saving some money...hehe....

Yes and no. In the case of a thick low viscosity index oil like a 20W50 or a monograde like straight 40 grade oil, the idling can be significantly lowered when cold. However, the Motorex is already a high viscosity index 10W50. Another factor is the pilot jets of the carbs slightly out of tunning. All bikes will tend to idle alittle bit easier and faster as the carbs warm up, but if you bike is unable to idle properly when starting from cold, you might want to get a mech to help you tune your carbs alittle, it may be running too lean to hold an idle when cold.

Will pulling the choke help? Do you mean pull the choke b4 starting the bike?

ANR, Thanks for your help, will try to get my mech to rectify this issue soon... BTW, which Maxima oil will you recommend for Hornet250?? I do not possess the user manual, so not sure whats the recommended oil grade.

Pull choke richens the mixture, it has the same effect. Ideally, any bike can be tuned to start well and hold an idle in our local climate, only in the very cold climate is the choke essential. I've had no feedback yet on hornet 250, tell me how u like the Motorex so far (milage, smoothness so far etc) and I might have a better clue on your preference.

Motorex, so far i have used till 6000km, not bad, but engine doesnt seems responsive & noisy, maybe just my butt feeling... been thinking of trying maxima but dont know which one to use.. My hornet 250 engine rpm~8500@100km/h, so usually at high rev, which oil recommended??

So you mean to say the Motorex shifting performance is 'not bad' and is otherwise not responsive and noisy in engine operation?

If you want responsive, go for the Ultra 5W50, it is relatively thin and responsive oil but very durable and and great shifting oil. It is suitable for revvy bikes. It should work well with your 250 as it won't rob power.

The Extra 15W50 will quiet things down but I do not find this optimal for your described preference as it will take longer to warm up and tend to be less responsive due to the higher viscosity. A smaller cc low torque engine like your 250 will have a more significant loss in responsiveness compared to a big cc high torque engine.

The Ultra 5W40 and Extra 10W40 are very thin formulations that work well with only a selected few bikes, mostly the current model sportbikes like CBR600/1K, 06R6 & GSXRs.

yes , pull choke before u pressing the start button,

that is wat the choke 's meant for.

it will raise the idling speed making the the combustion richer.

regarding this "engine oil" topic relevance to the above,

too thick a oill will also hinders idling in cold....

How do we know if the oil is too thick or thin for bike engine without referring to manual??

Just refer to the SAE code.

FYI, in the tropical country is better to use an oil with SAE 50...you can use 0w-50, 10w-50, 20w-50 or even 0w-60.....:thumb:

In some cases, oil with SAE 40, sometimes will be evaporated more quick than the SAE 50....

So the best way to keep your engine health, just referring to your manual book for the oil...that's all...:cheeky:

i dont have manual... anyone know what grade is recommended for hornet 250?

You can use the 15w-50 Motul Ester 5100 or you may use Castrol Activ 20w-50 or Repsol Moto 15w-50... :cheer:

The choice is yours bro, as long as you follow the SAE grade instruction...:cheeky:

bro KP,

juz checking with u. i been using Extra 15W50 for my spec 3.

see manual recommend 10W40 or 15W50

why is it so? to have 2 recommendation?

any issue in term of engine protection.

always change eo every 5000km. maybe +/- 100Km.

been wanting to ask but keep forgetting.
