Hi guys, I can't make up my mind right now between the above 2 bikes...

I saw both in real life, honestly both look equally nice except Derbi GPR 125 has a complete digital dash while aprilia is has analogue. The aprilia rs125 I am looking at the is 07 model with the sharp tail and the derbi GPR I saw at the shop is a 4 stroke. However when I read around, there seem to be a 2 stroke older model but I can't find them in SBF sales thread =/

Anyways, If you are me someone who looks for the outlook as well as performance.... which will you go for? Although 2 stroker is an obvious win but my friends mention to me that 2 stroke are a hassle.... Adding 2t, 2t makes your bike dirty easily, the sound is noisy....

And I heard from my friend's mechanic 4 stroke bikes actually corner faster/easier than 2 stroke because of torque issues? is that true?

Lastly I have'nt got a license so I can't really test both bikes but however is the performance of a 2 stroker compared to a 4 stroker a big difference? Consider acceleration etc etc....

Sorry for long post! Thanks for your opinions!

if TS is someone not hunger for power... just want a transport with great look and FC (aka Fuel Consumption). Specifications of Derbi should fit in well. TS might wanna consider RS125 & GPR125 riding posture.

For 2 stroke engine, I believe if owner follow periodic servicing strictly, problem can be minimise. Plus 2-stroke setup is been around for ages... nothing new.

Maybe you can search the Aprilla RS125 thread, comments from current or previous owner about this machine. Common fault or things to look out for?

Pricing and availability of parts is also another concern, especially for Derbi its population still relatively small in sillypore.

Almost forgot, they are head turner on the road! :thumb:

hmm true... If I am someone who needs power I will definetly go for rs125? because I dont really know how much a 2 stroker performance vary from 4 stroke...

Also my friend's friend told us that 4 stroke somehow corner faster than 2 stroke because of torque ?

Perhaps u are still new to the bike tech issues, since u are still in process of getting a 2B

Just make the scenario clearer to you. 4 stroke power delivery curve is more gradual.

It will be exactly like ur 2B learning bike.

the torque is the pulling force of the engine. It is torque that determines u accelaration.

4 stroke power curve is gradual. visualise like a 45 degree graph. The more throttle u turn, the increase power is gradual. Thus in a way 4 stroke is safer for a beginner as the power is more predictable.

2 stroke on the other hand , the curve is more steep. Thus throttle control have to be more precise. To make it harder. 2 stroke rpm rev up is much faster than 4 stroke.

A typical scenario with 4 stroke. u open throttle on a new and unfamiliar bike. half clutch to moving off. when the bike is wobbling and swaying due to not enough momentum. u just open more. Just like ur practical 1.

But for 2 stroke. When you bike wobble due to not enough momentum. IF u opne more throttle without precision, compensation and consideration. U bike will just "Rocket" forward. CAn be pretty dangerous for certain situation for beginners.

A stroke 125cc rev up is very fast, when compared to a 4 stroke. That is why a 200cc 4stroke bike, if of the same weight, might even loose to a 2 stroke 125cc bike.

Also a 2 stroke bike will rev more in it life time when compare to 4 stroke. That is why, technically, 4 stroke last longer. A example. BAse on one's riding habit. For 2 stroke. One will open throttle, accelarate to the next traffic light before closing throttle.U might have rev to 8~9000 rpm 6 sec before closing throttle. 4 stroke on the other hand will have rev 4~5000 rpm for 10 sec bewfore reaching red light. Not to mention, 2 stroke every downward stroke is power stroke. Whereby for 4 stroke, every 3 downward stroke. 1 is power stroke. needless to say. Downward stroke cause more friction in engineering sense.

Tech info aside. Just buy the bike u like most. Not because of other;s opinion.

The only opinion/info u need is which bike is cheaper in all grounds.

All ground in a sense, cost of bike. the maintenance cost. the spare parts cost. And the resale value.

The 2 bike you have mentioned is not cheap. so do take note on that.

But what performance you looking for? *Sadly I'm not riding a 2-stroke horse

My ex-colleague shared with me that 4-stroke small cc engine usually offer better pick up.

Somehow 2-stroke definitely offer better HP (aka Horse Power) then a 4-stroker with the same engine capacity.

For example :

Yamaha RXZ 135 : Max Power = 14.7kW @ 8,500rpm (Air-cooled 2-stroke single cylinder)

Yamaha X-1R 135: Max Power = 8.45kW @ 8,500rpm (Liquid-cooled 4-stroke, single cylinder, SOHC)

The common thing which I heard of 2-stroke is "piston jammed", partly due to the nature of the engine where 2T oil be burned along with fuel during combustion cycle. There might be other factors to consider too.

hmm hey guys, thanks for your time to answer me questions.. I have a much better view now... I more into their performance because I not really looking for a "transport" bike rather a "passion" bike as I have a car for transport purposes already....

Seems to me rs125 will be the better pick but however having said that, the sound might be something that bothers me as well because my friend who rides a 2 stroke says 1 month and I will be sick of the 2 stroke sound, however does a 4 stroke sound much nicer or just its more quiet ?

Posted (edited)

dun think too much lah.

2 stroke is much more powerful and much more pickup also.

it's not a hassle at all,

juz pour in expensive 2t, and rev into the power band.

**** if u want more quiet, go get electric bike.

sound and vibration is the connection between man and bike.

2-stroke engine exhaust pitch is high and very intoxicating fumes... 4-stroke (stock exhaust) much quieter.

since you not using for transport, then a 2 stroker would be much more fun to ride for play.. my vote goes to the RS

Not faster, its easier to corner with 4 stroke because the torque is always there.

i got rode RS125 and PGM4 before... they are really powerful bikes..

but had rode quite a couple of 4 stroke bikes like RVF, scooter and motard..

too used to the engine brake i supposed..?

tired of topping up 2T.. going green..

dun like the stench of the 2t lingering on me..

I would get the RS... to go with the derbi, I would feel like an idiot to have an uncle on a wave zooming past me while i am trying to chase him on my 4 stroke "sportsbike".

now why would you want to chase the uncle in the first place?

a sportsbike is a sportsbike, irregardless of power. riding one doesnt necessarily mean you have to be super fast, weave and overtake everyone on the road. nobody "wins" unless you're on a track.

TS, go with (most importantly) your financial ability and personal preference. both bikes are exp. and both look good, which i think shld be your criteria since you only listed these 2 choices and you arent in it for the "passion". :) find out how maintaining each will be like/mth, work out ur installments, dont buy and regret your choice after.

Who will like a sportsbike without power?? Would you want a ducati with a honda shadow engine?? Power does matters even if you cant fully utilised its potential...

my friend actually tried the Derbi bike... he rides a SP.... He said the bike is very comfortable and is very ideal for cruising like what you guys mentioned... and he say going over humps are'nt a big problem compare to his SP.... however he did say the power is not there at all... and after much consideration...

I decided to get a rs125 because the main reason to get a bike is the passion i have for bike and if i really want comfort i could always drive a car out...

Thanks for all the effort!!

Errr, I was just trying to say how a CUB can pace or even outrun this 125cc "sportsbike". This new era of 125cc 4 stroke sportsbikes are an embarrassment. :sian:
