My attempt at CF number plate...

Had some spare CF cloth left over from another project, so decided to try my hand at making a CF number plate

Cut the cloth to size, for me it was 24 x 19 cm for both front and back plates, cut to 26x21cm for allowance.

Use a pair of scissors you don't really care about, as the CF will kill it (not as bad as Kevlar though).

Other ingredients:

Epoxy resin

Car wax

Mix the resin, for this brand it's 5:1 ratio.

Found out later that I had mixed too much, as it started setting too quickly! :faint:

Before pouring on the cloth, need to do some preparation.

 

First laid a piece of transparency on a flat glass surface. This should give me a nice mirror finish. Then apply a few layers of wax on the surface to make the removal process easier later (hopefully!).

After 5 layers of cloth... let's hope it comes out nicely!

Not sure, haven't released it yet. But so far I saw one small hole where the epoxy didn't fill in

 

Also the other side got too much epoxy due to it setting too quickly, so the surface is quite uneven.

i wonder if you can use fine sand paper to smoothen and then spray a layer of clear coat and polish it up?

I won't bother with the other side... no one is going to see it.

Now to cut it to size.

Carbon fiber cloth, you can buy from NTC Engineering Hobbies, basement 1 of Fook Hai Building. Price, can't remember. Not cheap though.

 

The epoxy I bought from Oceanic Link Pte Ltd, but I heard they're expensive. Could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere. $70 for the size shown. Before anyone says that's expensive, I've not bought another set for what, 3 years?

 

I didn't have the "pro" stuff like a vacuum system to press the cloth flat, so the finish is not perfect. The pros can get it really to a mirror finish...

 

If you don't already have the materials, it's cheaper, nicer and less troublesome to just buy carbon fiber plate and cut yourself... But then won't have the D I Y "look" liao!

since u r doing number plate, if u get the numbers and letterings sealed between the epoxy and CF. wont it be better?

Can, but next time cannot transfer to other bike liao (unless keep number plate)

The best way is actually to paint the wordings in the mould so they become part of the plate (like your method). However I not so pro
