otherwise do the CF in a well ventilated area. a fan maybe ?

Negative.

The toxic fumes will be dispersed into the surrounding environment, dispersed faster with the fan blowing.

Then those around you will be breathing in these toxic fumes. With due respect, let's be responsible to those around us and also be responsible to Mother Earth. :)

Also, one may be charged by NEA for releasing toxic fumes into the environment.

I am not sure how the bike shops (if any) does such CF stuffs.

The best practice is to do it is inside a fume hood, with the user doning proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) of respirator with cartridge on each side of the respirator (remember to shave away the beard, as advised by Mr pinetree  ), which has the proper kind of filters above the fume hood to absorb such toxic fumes to prevent such toxic fumes from escaping into the environment. The hood above your stove in the kitchen will NOT work, so please do not try to use that.

But then again, except for research institutes and manufacturing plants, I doubt there is any person who install such a fume hood in the house.

hmmm.. Maybe those with a money plantation at home will have the capability to install one at home... lolz... :cheeky:

Don't mean to curse anyone here.

But that is provided that whoever the person is, he or she is still alive to "enjoy" this few hundred Ks...

If not, from the EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) point of view, don't think it is worth it.

I may be wrong in my comments. Please don't flame me...

actually wat is hazardous??

the epoxy resin or the CF ??

from what is see in the MSDS..

Epoxy

http://www.systemthree.com/msds/MSDS_SystemThree_Resin.pdf

CF

http://www.basf-cc.co.uk/en/Datasheets/C/Documents/Carbon%20Fibre%20msds.pdf

both are not classified as toxic but epoxy could be flammable during mix.

thanks

:fyi: the resin's fumes are carcinogenic... :goodluck: if you inhale it during the process...

As advised by Mr kaieiru before, the resin's fumes are carcinogenic.

For such little or no odor (as stated in the MSDS) fumes, we may not see the cancerous effect now, but only a few years later.

And if there are naked flames during the mixing of the epoxy and it catches fire, there may be more toxic fumes released.

However, I may be wrong again...

Carcinogenic

almost every thing is carcinogenic.

eg bbq chicken wings. can food preservative. moth balls etc..

anything that can produce free radicals. including excercising or even breathing will produce free radicals.

every chemical that has a benzene ring. is carcinogenic as well

go chew on that....
