Just a few questions about this.

What would be the response from an insurance company if a bike were to collide with a vehicle if the bike was being ridden down the centre of slow moving or standing traffic?

Insurance cover is fully comprehensive.

If there were to be high medical costs due to injury to the rider would the insurance cover this?

Is riding down the centre of slow moving or standing traffic illegal?

We all do it though.

Cheers

*camping to see if any1 can come out with a definite answer.*

my guess is if there's any accident when you lane split, you wont be able to claim anything.

Let's put it this way: in many accidents, the claimants claim against another motorist who would have been fined or charged for some offence. The fact that the other motorist committed an unlawful act generally does not stop someone from making a claim against them.

On the other hand, comprehensive (first party) insurance covers your vehicle. Not injuries to the rider.

So lets get this in perspective.

If my bike collides with a car as I am riding down the centre of two lanes of stationary or slow moving traffic, I am committing an offence by doing this, my insurance ( NTUC) will refuse to cover the cost of the damage to the car. Is this correct?

Someone must have experienced this situation.

The amount of bikes that ride down the centre is far more than the bikes I observe actually sitting in traffic ( which kind of contradicts the advantage of riding a bike).

I understand that the rider will not be covered for injuries, only the third party.

Interesting question, I'd like to know this too.

Basically, is it against to law to filter between non-moving/slow moving traffic? If yes, then insurance companes will not cover you or any damage you make if crashing surely?

it is against the law to weave in n out of traffic but if a vehicle hits u,its not entirely ur fault cos the driver of the vehicle who hit u MUST check his blind spot 1st n ensure he's clear to go b4 lane changing

Actually this topic has been discussed many times before. Can go search for it.

Riding in between lanes is called lane-splitting. There is no law created directly to prevent bikers from lane-splitting, in other words it is legal to lane-split, provided it is done safely. You may still be summoned for other offences like "inconsiderate driving" or "reckless driving" if caught riding dangerously i.e. weaving in and out. If accident occur it will be case by case basis.

hmm, not sure about here, but in the US, some states allow lane splitting and some don't.

my guess is, without solid proof, you cant claim anything.

maybe if you had a camera on board the bike..........thats a different story.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

So much misinformation in this thread.

1. If you turn right and a straight going vehicle from the opposite direction hits you, he can still claim from you. Even if you have committed an offence, your inconsiderate or rash driving, and your being fined or charged of the offence, does not prevent him from making a claim against you. Your insurer would still pay.

2. You park somewhere where there's a parking restriction, say double yellow lines. Someone hits your parked bike. That doesn't prevent you from claiming against the other motorist. His insurer would still pay.

so can i interprete this as, if i was lane splitting between lane 1 and 2, car at lane 2 swerves to lane 1 and as a result his rear bumper hit my front tyre and i fall, my bike hit another car, i can claim his insurance for myself and my bike? the car that got hit by my bike will claim my insurance?

thanks.
