Hi,

Is there any way to find out the accident history (under previous owners) of a particular bike?

The premise being, that if the previous owner had any misdemeanors, run-ins or benders, the bike's number would be in some sort of database?

Members pls advise?

Thank you and regards

woah got such thing eh?

Just have a closer look at the bike for dents, cracks and scratches are usually indicators. I seriously don't believe an ex-owner would change everything on the bike just to hide after an accident. Even if he does, there would still be some small indicators, or you can grill him for info! haha

got, go tp ask, but u need the owner's name, ic such, and it's not free. if u got few owners b4, good luck checking their record. however if minor cases and the drivers settle btw themself, then there's no way to find out.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

That's the prob with 2nd hand bikes from shops or from people you dont know.

You will not know the history of the bike.

What you can do is to do a check with your regular bike shop.

Accident bikes usually have some tell tale signs.

Obvious ones are crooked chassis, the wheels and body do not line up perfectly. Forks that does not goes smooth, brake discs that stutters.

Other details are the lock stop on the headstock. If there's a impact, probably one of the lock stop will be battered.

Scratches on the bar ends and pillion footrests all point to the fact that the bike was down some time.

Fair question. As far as I'm aware, there is no such database.

Don't think it's worth the hassle, the bikes I buy or would like to buy, have probably changed hands 3-5 times over their decade or more of typically hard usage.

For a used market, IMO it's safer to place bets on less common bikes with a 'relaxed' outlook - classic choppers, rare models, or those 'general purpose' bikes favoured by old-timers like the CB250, Suzuki Intruder, Virago etc. I like the previous owner to be some experienced family guy who has more chance of taking good care of the motorcycle and hand it to you in passable condition. If you know the guy and he's a retiree, sometimes he gives you the iron horse free :D

Not an absolute safeguard, but owner personality helps to decide if a bike is ultimately worth investing in.

You could also go for the "hangar queen" type. Quite old but underused. But then bikes with such history of non-usage develop their own share of problems, but at least, with good mechanical knowledge you could know exactly how to recondition them for regular service and at least have a solid, straight frame to work on.
