GARMIN ZUMO 550: USD$386.....

How?? Is the price ok ???

I think market selling about SGD1.2k....

Pls help me decide....i need a Zumo.....:faint:

BTW,,I'am no trader,,,just helping fellow bikers get cheap stuff,,hope you understand....

Excerpts from http://technical-itch.co.uk/2008/07/02/garmin-zumo-550-sat-nav-review/

Zumo 550 Specification

â– Zumo 550

■Preloaded City Navigator® NT for North America or Europe

■MapSource® City Navigator North America NT DVD or City Navigator Europe NT DVD (full unlock)

â– Motorcycle mount with mounting hardware

â– Vehicle suction cup mount with integrated speaker

â– Dashboard disk

â– Carry case

â– AC charger

â– Vehicle power cable

â– Motorcycle power cable

â– USB cable

â– Security screwdriver

â– Custom caps (silver and black)

â– Garmin stickers

â– Quick reference guide

â– CD-ROM containing full user manual

For the Zumo 500 and 400 you get one of the following European regions, depending on country of purchase:

â– UK and Ireland

â– Nordics

â– Benelux

â– France

â– Italy and Greece

â– Spain and Portugal

The Zumo 550 covers the whole of Europe.

I believe the voice prompts are map specific and not between the difference of 500 or 550.

The 500 does not come with the car kit.

The voice prompts can also be damn irritating......and whilst on the bike... u do not get to hear the voice prompts and probably do not need it. There is bluetooth compatability so you can pair a bluetooth ear piece if you want to hear the voice prompts.

The Zumo Bracket for the bike does not have speakers to play the voice prompts. Only the carkit with embedded speakers do.

Also found out that indicative price for the Zumo500 in Singapore is in the range of SGD569 whilst the Zumo550 is indeed SGD1100-1300 range for the extra carkit and pre installed full Europe Map.

Good to get more research and feedback from other interested parties.... these are my own findings and opinions and not sure if you guys agree.

First off, the mount for the bike has speaker output jack and mic input jack, so you can also use a hard-wire headset like this one from Starcom:

http://www.starcom1.com/SH-004.jpg

They do a Zumo cable that connects to the headset and into the GPS mount.

This is handy as you can bluetooth your phone to the Zumo (550 at least) and make/receive calls on the bike. Also, the 550 has an MP3 player so you can listen to tunes on the move.

Bluetooth headsets are typically not stereo, and need charging. For long tours you can't beat the wired headset. If you don't need to talk on the phone, any earbuds can be connected.

WARNING, Singapore and Malaysia maps for the Zumo are only available on SD card like this:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/318ZFkHns3L._SL500_AA250_.jpg

THis means two things: you can't browse the maps or plan trips on your PC with Mapsource (the garmin map browser) and the SD card maps. Only on your GPS Unit. Although you can download some nice free maps from malaysingmaps to browse and plan on mapsource...when you import the route onto Zumo you see the route on your GPS map. :cheeky:

Secondly, you have used your SD card slot for the maps...only one slot, no more slot for the card with your tunes on :(

I've had a 550 for a couple of years now, and moving to Singapore I couldn't get around so easily without it.

Plenty more information on the Zumo here

Hiya, would appreciate a clarification ... so the bottomline is that malsingmaps' maps can be used e.g. routable on the Zumo? Cos' I think that apart from MFM's maps, MSM have the most detailed maps for Malaysia and Singapore.

Cheers

Ah true.... the unit and maps works best with the original Garmin maps! The free updates from Garmin are useful. Original Maps cost around SGD100-200. These are highly recommended if you want to use Mapsource to plan your trip with all the waypoints, rest stops, petrol stops etc etc..... then export the route to your GPS. There are also Original maps for Thailand which comes again at another cost.

Garmin Original maps have lesser Points-of-Interests (POIs) like the famous food joints, Petrol stops, AXS machines/ATMs.... all these are available from the free malsingmap/JeromeWee maps as the large community in this region has added heaps of local information onto the maps they help update. Even to the "hotspots" where our Northern neighbors highway patrol supposedly lay speed traps to clock our "attack mode" endeavours!!

The free alternatives are by Malsingmaps and Jerome Maps, which are routable as well. Comes with lots of local POIs especially for good Malaysian Food joints in far out places even like Terengganu!! I have occassionally used it to look for food to see what the locals think are "good food". Interesting but also a bit bo liao...

The biggest drawback highlighted by bro, twisticles are true. With the free maps you cannot plan your trip on your PC/Laptop using Mapsource then upload onto your GPS. You have to physically map out the routes on your GPS but it still works.

Good tip on the Starcom headsets for direct connections to the Zumo. If you are getting the Starcom/ Autocom... why stop there... get a bike to bike/ bike to pillion connection!! All the "poison", all the endless possibilities!!!! Wahahaha!!

Having said that, the Zumo500 have the same functionality as the Zumo550 in its entirety. It does have the MP3 function if you so desire..... so too the mobile call functions.

The only differences are the significance in price, the absence of a full europe/north american map and a missing carkit !!

A Garmin car GPS only costs SGD 200-300 retail (Nuvi200).

Do you want a car kit here if you ask yourself. If you do, get a Zumo550.

Dun get me wrong... i have the Zumo550 too and like most.... i couldn't leave home without it when i am up north.

I mostly keep my eyes on the road and plug in a Ipod for the music i like, if possible i like to leave my local mobile in my pouch and not be bothered on my ride especially by marketing calls asking me to sign up a "free credit card" or "cheap personal insurance". Hey i want to ride!!!!

I also hate the prompts by the Zumo telling me to travel at 110km/hr(Arrgh!! the drone like voice!!!!...killl me!!!!!).....they do give out a voice alert if you exceed the "said" speed limit of the local area be it on the NS highway or trunk roads.

More importantly.... the GPS is a useful guide. They come with their own limitations while using it!!

The price of the Zumo500 and the Zumo550 are SGD569 and SGD1200++ respectively (retailing in Singapore!!). And the GPS unit itself works exactly the same.

I hope the prices are current.

Sorry for the long post, some of you probably have fallen asleep or grabbed your gear and halfway up the NSHW.

Bro coolcat,

The Malsingmaps (MSM) can be used on the Zumo. Just that you cannot load the map using Mapsource (from your PC/Laptop). Mapsource isusually used to plan your trips before hand.

But you can still use mapsource to look look, see see, how and where you want to go....on your PC/Laptop.

The original maps are a little more "seemless" so you can directly work on your pc and the export to your Zumo for your planned routes/trips.

I agree on the fact that the MSM are very detailed maps for Singapore and M'sia.

btw what are MFM??? Blur liao....

Bro bogster,

I think there are lots of people interested in the good deal you are offering but also sceptical about the integrity of the unit being genuine Garmin products, international warranty etc etc....

Your price is really damn good to be true... though i know if you buy online from the states and hand carry back the Zumo550 cost in the region of SGD600-700

Maybe you can shed more details on this offering?? Will hopefully help settle nerves.....

MFM - short for "malfreemaps" .... malsingmaps started as mappers' community, then a few of the people broke away from malsingmaps to start malfreemaps to uphold their GPS mapping values:

"We strongly believe in updating GPS maps and sharing it with members of the public. We do this as a hobby. We do not look forward to any monetary reward. Our own satisfaction plus appreciation from satisfied users are ample reward for us."

So now there's two sources for maps; to our benefit :).

Anyway, Bogster, will contact ya via mobile to order.

My take on this offer is, think it through, and contact Bogster directly if you have any question or doubt or "nerves". He has given his number after all.

Cheers

Licenced Singapore Land Authority Garmin Map

Written by EastGear

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (19th MAY 2009)

EastGear has obtained the licence from Singapore Land Authority (SLA) to produce a licensed SLA-Garmin map featuring a full set of address point and postal code data. All Garmin units distributed by EastGear's authorised dealers will be bundled with this new map. EastGear will be working with Malfreemaps (http://www.malfreemaps.com) to provide the latest Singapore and Malaysia maps.

Customers who have purchased a Garmin unit with a valid licence will be entitled to this free upgrade. An email will be sent with instructions. (Current registered users can login and update their map)

The map will be also for sale and details will follow soon.

EastGear is the ONLY company with the licence to put address and postal code data in Garmin devices.

The SLA Address Point database consists of a set of computer generated address points with unique X-coordinate of Address Point (centroid) and Y-coordinate of Address Point (centroid) which is protected by the IP laws.

We are unable to determine the origin and accuracy of the address and postal code data in other mapsets and if any legal issues might arise from using them.

hi guys..

just a query..

i was offerd by looi's a GS adv..

i',m looking at that bike as my next one..

he claimed that, even as parallel importer, if bought from them, there will be an international warranty of 1 year..

so if any thing wrong, can just go to them. Even if there is a recall of some parts, they will honour the international warranty..

is it true..?

Hi Wacko

How much were u offered for the GSA? Can break down in details?

HI bedsheet..

I was offered $48K with full options, side panniers, top case etc.

I was looking at PML's price list and the GSA was $41 machine.

Last mth it was $39k.

I'm seriously considering Looi's as i have to get rid of my current bike, ans only they will take in at high price..

Anyway,

I still wonder if PML honours the "international warranty" as said by Looi's?

and oh

i've been silently stalking this thread.. reading with intent..
