hi people,

I looking for a GS but I will like to ask some very newbie questions. as in the maintenace of the machine. as told by friends that it is very expensive even for normal servicing. how true is it, i will need some education from the current riders. please advice me on the servicing matters. tks.

Hi Kimhwee,

Got my GSA brand new in May 08 and this is what i have paid for PML servicing so far:

Service Labour Consumables ie all oil/filter/gaskets/spark plugs/O rings

5k $36 + $66.69 = $102.69 GST included

10k $216 + $141.96 = $357.96 GST included

20k $225 + $356.37 =$581.37 GST included

For first 5k servicing only engine oil 4L and oil filter replace.

10k and 20k servicing are more comprehensive with checklist and with oil change from rear Axle, rear wheel drive, gearbox, engine interior & exterior gaskets, spark plugs(at 20k),engine valve adjustment etc...etc.

As my ride is on 2 years unlimited mileage warranty it make sense to be serviced by PML to avoid complications on warranty issues.

I think you can get cheaper servicing done elsewhere at M Technik, Perfection Motors.

If competent enuff some owners have actually DIY servicing.

A Happy National Day weekend to all.

Hi, can only comment from the R11XX series' perspective as I do not know much about the R1200 series. DIY maintenance is not difficult. Valve clearance is every 10K and that is the most technical regular maintenance you need to know. Oil change is also not difficult, I've not changed my plugs for 2 years, just check them when you do your valve clearance and they should be fine. I regularly check the brakes and the wire harness; that is more preventive than anything. You may need a good mech to balance your throttle bodies occasionally, I mean about every 10k km or so.

If you do not wish to do your own maintenance, then I reckon that the usual suspects can do these maintenance, YMMV.

PML I understand charges labour by time spent. Talk to Kris at PML to find out more, he is quite an approachable chap.

Cheers

My friend on 4 wheels was denied exit out of Malaysia. They claimed his logcard was not original. I had no problems at that checkpoint even though my logcard was duplicated. My friend's logcard brought was original given by LTA and they claimed Singapore car's logcard must be the one with hardcover just like Malaysia's. What nonsense.

Juz got back from PML showrm and liked the R1200GS very much. Quoted price (as per website pricelist) is $36,800 (machine price only) for a new bike. Was told only ABS is stock. All other options such as Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA), onboard computer and has to be factory fitted which means more $$$ on top of machine price.

I wonder what other options can be included and the related costs as I can't find any information on brochures and PML website.

Guys who own the 1200GS, what do you include as options when you got your bike and how much did you pay for them? Pls advise.

i was comtemplating of taking a bmw pi or agent bike(from pml) too..

although the pi offer around 1k cheaper, i'm worried about the warranty.

for me, the reason to go to pi is that, they are willing to take in my current bike, which pml could not.

for pml case, its just the warranty issues.

i had a bro who had issues wit the bmw bike he just took out from the pi, till now its not been resolve. its just "wait and see" approach. another bro who took over a bmw(another model), with warranty from pml, had his issues resolved instantaneously. the pi told me that bmw have this international warranty, which i confirmed with pml, but must produce all documents which the pi could not produce.

well, in the end, i found a bike shop willing to take an agent bike and finance from the bikeshop itself. now.. waiting for the announcement of the 2010 models before i make my choice..

i think the K bikes are just too bloody dangerous for our roads here....there are so stable and efficient that before you know it you are WAY above the speed limits. took the beast out for a spin after a piss long time the other day and before i knew it i was doing 70 on nicoll (its a 70km/h rd), just as i passed the overhead bridge where the cops camp out, i realised my meter was in miles....LOL!

I do not usually ride the K but everytime i do, it puts a smile on my face. Just some ramblings as I take a minute or 2 off work and wish that I was on my bike.

I believe the ESA is indeed an option you can add onto the machine price but i have been riding my GSA for a while now and haven't found the need to adjust my suspension "on the go". Or riding long distances from the highway onto a offroad track and trying to conquer the world yet. You got to ask yourself if you are the type of rider that does that.

I find that most info i have read, owners would rather get an aftermarket shocks to customise for your ride experience.

The on board computer is a "good to have" instrument to have but again, its a "want" more than a "need".

Speak with Kris if you want a better picture on the extras.

I love my GSA and would not trade it for another bike.

Personally, i'll buy a BMW bike from PML to have the assurance, i know who i will need to get back to if there is any mechanical/electrical problems with the bike. If there is any recall, at least they will let you know.

Servicing at PML is more expensive but sometimes i tell myself that there are other bikes out there that a "10k servicing" would cost then over a $1k.

The guys at BMW are good at what they do, the servicing i have been there for has been pleasant. Before they change any parts, just tell them that you want to be informed before they change it and they keep to their word.

Having said that, buying a bike is also a matter of luck. If you bought a "lemon", and all else being constant, i rather would have bought a "lemon" from PML.

dun get me wrong..

pml do sevice a pi bike, afterall its a bmw.

its just the factory warranty thats impt.

like fir chan said, if there is a recall, pml bikes will know first and would get the change 1st. pml told me that to honour the 1 year intenational warranty on bmw bikes, they need the shipping details, the sevice chit history etc which i could not remember.

by the way.. what bike u thinking of getting..? PI = shop in kaki bukit..?

i personally feel there is no need to go back pml for servicing. there are few shops that do bmw bikes like m-teknik in paya ubi.. just my worthless cent of thoughts
