My pulsar180 recently had some problems starting and I has since gone to changed its battery. I had no luck starting it from kick-starting but was thinking, shouldn't it be possible to kick-start a motorcycle even if the battery was a problem? I could push-start it, but whenever I closed the throttle entirely the whole thing will just die off again. And I need to restart the whole push-start thing.

I got the exact same problem on my bike last time. Electric start, kick start all cannot work. Push start then can work. But have to keep throttling if not die. My problem was the magnetic coil.

If the magneto or alternator isn't working, then no electricity is being generated when you turn the engine over by kicking. In that case, the plugs can't fire, so no ignition.

Of course if there's no fuel or no compression, then kickstarting also won't work.

How much does this fix usually cost? Is the coil expensive? How much does a battery cost?

just go universal motor to have them check it out. they can advise better.

if it's just battery or plugs, can go LAB get, cheaper.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

You have a kick starter, so its easy to check if you have compression. If its jammed stuck, the piston is jammed. If there is no compression, your piston seals are gone. Call a tow truck, kow tow to your bike a thousand times and ask it for forgiveness.

Not firing? Pull plug, check. If fouled, replace. If not, check plug cap. Plug in a spare plug, ground to frame, start bike. If blue spark, firing system is fine. If there is no spark, or the spark is orange, you have an electrical problem. It could be a dirty connector, or the plug coil itself is damaged, or the magneto coil is gone. A dirty connector just needs contact cleaner sprayed into the plug cap, but wd40 works just fine.

Is the plug you pulled dry? Could be fuel delivery problem. Check for kinked lines. Release the overflow nozzle and twist the throttle. Does petrol come out? If not, you have a blockage somewhere. Check you fuel filter, and check for kinked lines.

If that doesnt help, you may need to pull the carb to observe. Could be a blocked jet, or float stuck in wrong position. A float stuck in high wont have petrol going in. A float stuck in low stuck in flow will flood the carb. If you had to ask how to check your carb, just send your bike to a mechanic. You will likely make things worse tinkering yourself. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I told you before. Exact same symptoms happened to me. Electric start cannot work. Kick start cannot work. Only push start can work. Have to keep throttling if not engine will die.

My magnetic coil or whatever its really called spoil. High speed and as long as throttle opened, the thing won't die.

Its good to isolate problems by symptoms before making a premature diagnosis.

If i practiced that, i wouldent have burnt 500 dolls doing the bike engine of my fazer when the final fix cost me all of 3 dolls.

I do think its a magneto coil problem too, to quote hossan leong...

Or in my case, thought it was every other thing, EXCEPT the coil and i wasted a truckload of money fixing other stuff i didn't need! New carb. New starter motor. New air filter. New spark plug cap. New spark plug. New rectifier. Adjust the clutch. Dunno how many times open up the thing and put in new oil. I think 3 times. Still same problem until change coil, HEY PRESTO!

Lucky my bike all these things all cheap. I just felt damn emo after that. I posted my problem on SBF and no one correctly identified the problem. So now, to pay back to this glorious community which we call SBF, i am giving TS my humblest opinion on what could be wrong.

TS symptoms were exactly like mine. Even down to the part when i changed the battery and the problem came right after that. TS riding pulsar. I think the coil should be cheap as well. If fazer then my recommendation would be different.

Why so serious? Don't angry ah. :)

Well guys, thanks for all your inputs and concern but I already got it fixed at the mechanic. I have a feeling they are chopping me cause I'm totally noob at this and after all my P-Plate is still proudly being displayed at the front. Apparently they changed the battery for $45 but I'm doubting that cause it seems to be a little on the cheap side? I'm not too sure on that. For all I know they might have just changed some coil and charged me $45 and bluffed me that the battery is new. Hahahaha. Oh and ya, I don't even know how my old battery looked like. Today was the first time I opened the seat side cover to look at my battery. Yes i'm that noob. I guess it's just things that I have to slowly learn and pick up along the way.

Okay this is a freaking stupid question but how do you check that your spark plugs are working? I pull the hose thingy that covers the spark plug and just attempt to electric start the bike and observe if there are blue sparks at the plug?

Posted

So you changed your battery second time?

Second time? This is the first time I changed it since I got the bike, which I got second hand la already 5 years in running. Not sure anyone changed it before that not.

That hose thing is your plug cap. You need a plug removal tool. If you still have the standard bajaj pulsar toolkit, its your screwdriver handle.

This is much easier to show. I believe your user manual should tell you how.

In the event you got a second hand bike, and both manual and standard toolkit are not with you, you will need to purchase a plug removal tool. I bought a cheap tool for 8 dolls from universal homemart, and a box of 10 ngk spark plugs from lab for 30 dolls. Be sure to purchase a plug tool for motorbikes. It should be a 16mm plug. The bigger one is for cars, and 2t bikes.

To see if the cap is functioning, i like to use a new plug so that i can remove a faulty spark plug from the equation. You dont need to pull the plug yet. I would slot the plug into the cap, and have the tip touch the motorbike frame. If you dont do this, you will get an electrical shock. It wont be fatal, but it will surprise you.

Btw, did you check what brand of battery you are using? If you have a yuasa, your mechanic likes you. He is only making a profit of about 10 dollars. If its some unknown china brand battery, then too bad lah. No worries, since the bike hardly ever dives into the battery for power. The lights turn on only when the engine is running, after all.

Have i mentioned my pulsar's rectifier ever caught fire before? Silly designers encased the rectifier module in a resin filled box. Burning resin smells terrible. But thats a story for another day.

Im not angry. I just think that its better to confirm symptoms and isolate the problem before diving into doing a fix that was not necessary to begin with. Thats all.

I didnt think that i would come across as angry. :o

Isn't it supposed to be encased in a hollow heatsink type thing which is sealed with resin?

Pulsar bike is not easy to kick start like Cup Chai.

Please follow step by step.

1. Check the battery voltage if less than 12.5v( check the rectifier and battery)

2. Check the plug and starter carbon(check carbon can only done by professional)

Above after solve.Then check

Problem with die off when close throttle

1. Please tune your bike carb and idle>> will solve the problem. (I do it DIY)

For push start most of the bike best is to put in 2nd gear with clutch press. Push the bike speed at least 15km/h and release sure start.

Good luck. Can PM me .

Ya, how come ah, kapcai is like damn easy to kickstart? I have never come across a kapcai which is very difficult to kickstart...

yup i have a yuasa. that's cool.

Do you fix up your own voltmeter on the bike by yourself?

And i'm starting to kick-start this thing more often. Think I should roughly get a feel of it. For now it takes about 4-5 good kicks to get it going.

Small cylinder mean smaller pressure. Also bike design.

No. I borrow my little brother's multimeter when i suspect i have an electrical problem.

Your yuasa, top up the battery water once a year, and it will last you many many years.

But like other street bikes with small capacity harder to start leh... I tried like ybr, cg, eg, pulsar, sp, kr all like so difficult to start. Must kick harder...

u sure got fire? i had the same symptom, initially plastic burning smell, then keep riding, smell get heavier, suddenly saw my butt was smoking. lucky i'm not on expressway, so panickly turn into pavement thru traffic light junction, open my seat, all the smoke come out.
