Just to info, the Angkor sites were flooded on the 22 Sept during second day tour. Was airlifted with other tourist back to Siem Reap. Pls note you cannot ride your bike to the Angkor site near Siem Reap. You need to engage a tuk tuk to tour the sites. I am now in Laos Pakse. Left SR on 23 Sept and rode to rain using Highway 7 all the way Laos. Today sunshine in Pakse.

Now in Vientian, weather rain and then sunshine. So far using the major roads no problem except have to be careful about potholes, cattles, buffaloes, goats and dogs and little children. You should not have problem riding up. Do get a map of the countries first as it will be helpful. Anyway you can always ask the local villagers anytime you are in doubt at a junction.

In Louang Prabang now. Weather was good for the last 5 days as no rain. I took 4 hour to travelled 140 km from Phou Khoun to Louang Prabang. The mountain road was very twisty and very bad. There were lots of mudslides and rocks because of the recent rain. So if you were to come up here, estimate that your travelling time will be longer to travel 100 km in the mountains. This will help in planning your rest stop for the night as it is best not to travel at night in the mountain in my opinion.

Rainy season drawing to an end

Published: 11/10/2011 at 11:41 AM

Online news:

The Meteorological Department announced on Tuesday that the current wet season will end about the middle of this month and a new storm being formed over the Philippines is not of concern.

Centrel Weather Forecast Division director Prawit Jaempanya said.because of the monsoon there will still be some rain, about 40-50mm, in Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, Bangkok and nearby provinces, and eastern provinces of Rayong, Chon Buri, and Nakhon Nayok one or two days from now.

The rainy season will end from the middle of this month, he said.

"During this time there may be little to moderate rain and possibly heavy rain in these provinces. There will be no more rain after the end of the monsoon in mid-October, at the end of Buddhist Lent," Mr Prawit said.

Mr Prawit said the Meteorological Department is not concerned about a new storm forming over the Philippines because it will be weakened by a cold wind from China.

Hi All,

I am back from my travel to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos since tuesday. Managed to travel down from Chiang Sean pass Bangkok to Hatyai. On the 7 Oct while travelling along the main highway 117 we had to detour at Nakon Sawan near Kao Lieo as the main highway was not passable. Even then we had to cross small flood waters to get to highway 1. Near Mano Rom, we had to detour again to get to Chainat to highway 32. After that no more detour though flood waters were already threathening the highway in many areas at the time.

Malaysia / Thailand / Laos / Cambodia without any special permits other than your log card and insurance for the respective countries. Vietnam & China will require Guides, quite a fair bit of red tape & of course $$$. Myanmar is out of bounds to Motorcycles in general, at least for locations further from the border.

I'm thinking of doing Ko Chang & Ayuttaya somewhere later this year. Most probably in September or December. Anyone interested in this itinerary? 9D/8N with partial rail.

Slow bikes under 100km/h welcomed but rider MUST be independent and preferably of male gender. Looking for a pack size of 4.
