Hi all,

I have recently bought myself two helmets from Viet Nam which are recommended by my friends. Then recently, I was told that we can only wear the helmets that are sold here by the motorbike shop. The helmets are actually certified in other countries. I can see those Malaysians riding on their bikes with the Malaysian helmets which is not approved by the LTA. Can someone enlighten me with the rules and regulations as I am quite confused. Appreciate it very much.

The rule says you can only wear helmets approved by PSB.

Although I have no qualms wearing a non-PSB approved ARAI RX7 or Shoei RF1000, I will never wear a brandless helmet produced in the region, PSB approved or not.

Do you trust the Vietnam helmet to protect you in a fall?

Hi Ulysses_sc,

Thanks for the reply. The helmet costs 150 USD with bluetooth headset attached which is made in korea. My father in law bought it from US. He gave it to me when I was visiting him in Vietnam. I forgot about the brand but it's approved by the US and it is a huge brand there according to him. I have left it in Malaysia with my cousin. I am contemplating to use it here in SG. The reason why I posted this is to know whether it would be a huge offence if I do actually wear it when I am riding the bike. :)

The fine is $50 for wearing non-PSB approved helmet. But this is rarely enforced. There is a big discussion in this forum on what happens in the event of an unfortunate insurance claim, but so far no one has any concrete evidence what is the outcome.

What safety standards does your helmet meet? SNELL and ECE works for me. DOT is a little suspect, as anyone can claim their helmets meet DOT standards.

Bottom line, you need to decide what is sufficient protection for your head. Is it some cheasy PSB approved made-in-xxx helmet, or a mid/top range helmet from a reputable manufacturer.

The purpose of PSB is to prevent the use of cheapo and dangerous helmets. Unfortunately this is also the easy way out to enforce a blanket ruling that all helmets (reegardless of model) need to be PSB compliant.

We had a video tv show posted here long time ago. And articles written and read, that testings of a DOT and the supposedly better SNELL helmets.

DOT helmet actually was tested to be better. SNELL is hype & marketing.

But all in all, in Singapore, where our gahment and our people twist and turn to their advantage, the rules, laws and regulations. You might want to consider just keeping that helmet for when you go touring in Malaysia and Thailand. And wear a Singapore Compliant Helmet while in Singapore.

Hi Chao,

Yes I do actually have a license, which recently I converted to SG driving license. Btw, I heard that getting the helmet to be approved takes $$$ and quite a while to process. I would take viciousKitty's advice for now. Thanks a lot peeps!! Appreciate that. I saw lots of riders out there wearing helmets without the PSB sticker on. Perhaps there's another layer on top of it. It's like a trend now. Have a good day peeps!!!

The best advice I ever saw on this topic is to just wear the safest, best helmet you have. If it isn't PSB certified, and you do get caught and fined, which is exceedingly unlikely but not impossible - just smile and consider it a small tax on your personal safety.

I have a PSB approved $25 no-name open face helmet I bought and used for the riding course, and a $260 non-approved, full face HJC helmet.

I'm not sure what viciouskitty would advise, but I'm pretty sure about which helmet I want to have on my head every day.

You can't take 1 helmet and send for approval. From what I know you need to send in a batch and this batch will be destroyed during the testing.

There is nothing to advise. You already knew what you are willing to pay for, and what you are willing to do.
